So up to this date, we now have four New Super Mario Bros. titles. While most of them have sold, and continue to sell, well, there have been plenty of criticisms over the years that the series in general is nowhere near as good as the original NES/SNES games or the 3D games. For many reasons. Do you think 2D Mario needs a tuneup?
Personally, I think they should. The NSMB series is fun, but something about all of the games just feels 'cheap'. This is definitely not the case with Sunshine/Galaxy. [Example: battling a Hammer Bros. in SMB3 was awesome, and the theme that played during it was one of the best on the NES. When I heard that theme remixed in NSMBW, I kinda cringed. It sounded like something out of a really cheap MIDI music program from 1998.]
I can't shake this feeling that ever since the original NSMB for the DS came out in 2006, Nintendo wanted to make a more casual-friendly Mario game that 1.) was like the originals yet 2.) had its own new unique feel. To many like myself, though, it was 1.) nothing like the originals, and 2.) it still didn't really have its own new, distinct feel at all. I hear the same message echoed from people who have played since the NES days and from people who haven't picked up a controller since the NES days: it just doesn't compare to the originals. Enough with what I think though- I'd like to hear responses from others too.

Absolutely not.
I'd much prefer the Galaxy team just focus on making new 3D Mario games, and I don't really care what happens with the 2D series.
The New Super Mario Bros. games are boring, but that is half due to 3D Mario games just being so much more enjoyable in every way.
I doubt I'll really enjoy a new 2D Mario game ever again because they'll always just be pretty crappy in comparison.
I'm pretty tired of these 2D Mario games, I think we have enough of them.
There still isn't a soild 3D Mario Bros. game, with a good muitplayer, you know, playing as Mario and Luigi on the same screen in a 3D Mario 64 thing, with out it having to be another reamke of Mario64 -_-
I remember when Nintendo used be to about new things.

I really liked NSMB.U, but not the other New ones as much. I think they actually got NSMB right with this newest one, but I can't say the same about the other entries. I didn't like the 1st, 2nd, or Wii one as much, but they are OK.
I'm not really sure what they should do, but I'm sure the next 3D Mario will turn some heads, especially with HD, the Gamepad, surround sound, and Wii remotes still hanging around in Nintendo's toolbox. Not to mention their online is better than it ever has been.

I kinda agree. I liked the new ideas of the GCN era especially Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, the toon style of WInd Waker, and the whole idea of Pikmin.
I like Nintendo sequels, it's just nowadays the seem kinda samey and while they're still good they don't really try anything new or ambitious.

I'd like more variation in the 2D Mario games (aka all new graphics, music, worlds/bosses/content/etc), but I'm not sure the Galaxy team would be right for them. I mean, it's not like they ONLY made 3D Mario games, they have had some experience with 2D before and it arguably kind of 'sucked' (Donkey Kong Jungle Beat).
Basically, if they would promise that their 2D Mario games would ONLY change the content (as in, add new all graphics, all new soundtrack, all new worlds, new enemies and bosses, etc) and not try to completely wreck the game structure/change its focus too much (like changing it to focus on score or some deep story or something), then I'd be fine with it. But I'd be a tad skeptical.
Really, the first 3 NSMBs weren't all that great. NSMBU, that's a whole nother story. NSMBU is, at least IMO, the best 2D Mario there is.
However, the Galaxies are some of the best games I've ever played. Actually, I'm still hoping and praying for a Super Mario Galaxy 3 on Wii U. Anyway, I just want the Galaxy team to make 3D Marios. They're good at it, and I feel especially with Wii U, they'll be able to make something amazing.
I'm not too sure about NSMBU right now. From what I've played so far it's nowhere near as good as people are making it out to be. Hopefully it gets better later in the game.
Back on topic, yes it definitely needs a tuneup. A change in the music alone would be nice. I never thought that the NSMB series soundtrack was that great to begin with, and getting tiring hearing the same sounding or recycled music for the fourth time now.

It's OK to have an opinion. This ain't the Soviet Union you know. Letterboxd Youtube Channel
Personally I like the NSMB series but than again I prefer my Mario games 2D. I tried the 3D Mario games, both Galaxy games and Mario 3D Land and I just got bored of them. Honestly I think they should have two teams that way they can produce 3D and 2D Mario games to please fans of both series, which in the end means more money for them.

Maybe they should just make a new Mario game that's in 2D sidescroller, instead of a 3D sidescroller. Like a cartoon.
I'm thinking they'll at least keep the style of Galaxy, but maybe not as bright(lighting).
It seems like the Galaxy team makes the best Mario games right now. I think Nintendo should discontinue the New Super series and start a new 2D Mario franchise that isn't a throwback of old games and doesn't rely on nostaglia to be great; the next 2D Mario game could act as if Mario was in the time period where he was still new and fresh with ideas. Sure, it can have similar gameplay to the classic games, but the Galaxy team needs to make it follow in the footsteps of DKCR or Rayman Origins; those were great retro revivals yet they didn't completely rely on nostaglia to be great. Sure, there were some throwback segments, but for the most part those games felt new and fresh as if we were in the 1980's or 1990's. I want the next 2D Mario to do just that. It can have similar gameplay to its NES predecessors, but make it feel like a new and fresh experience like Rayman Origins and DKCR. In other words, Nintendo, don't rely on Mario's past excellence; feel free to add fresh new ideas as long as they're not too drastic (like no redesigns, rebooting, turning it into a rated M game, etc.), like what DKCR and Rayman Origins did.

As someone who didn't like how Donkey Kong Country Returns had no Kremlings, traditional enemies, K Rool, other Kongs or non Rambi/Squawks animal buddies, I'd be pretty annoyed if Nintendo did something like that for a 2D Mario game. I like Goombas and Koopas, I like characters like Mario, Luigi and Peach and I like that kind of stuff.
I don't think switching the team would make much difference. Now switching the directors maybe, but they'll have to get past board members with any huge art changes.
Seriously, the last 3D Mario was basically a 2D Mario.
speaking of which, while I genuinely liked 3D Land, I will say it is in retrospect disappointing that the team behind DK Jungle Beat and Mario Galaxy, 2 of Nintendo's most creative and fun games perhaps ever, is relying on mechanics from NES games
But I didn't start with the original, so I definitely can't have your point of view. The thing is Nintendo is targeting a new demographic with the New Super Mario Bros. series, and in now way can they be as hardcore as the original. What they can do — and what they're doing I believe — is making DLCs that reflect the level of skills required in the previous iterations. I'm quite sure you have those in NSMB2.
