Topic: New Wii U; Cat chewed through power cord. Is it covered/can it be replaced?

So my roommate's cat is a jerk and my roommate is stingy with his money. I'm between jobs at the moment and don't want to spend much money if I don't have to. I wasn't able to find what all the warranty covers, but the gist of what I was seeing was 'manufacturer defects' so I'm thinking not covered, but figured I'd ask, anyway. Can it be replaced for free/cheaply? Or do I just have to outright buy another cord and hope the cat doesn't sneak in to wreck my belongings again?

Specifically, it's the power cord for the Wii U GamePad that the cat chewed into. Got this thing just this month, I think two weeks ago, three at most, purchased from Wal-Mart. Didn't buy Wal-Mart's warranty.

I also apologize if this should have been placed in the help/problems section of the forum, but in my experience those particular parts of the forums don't generally get many views. The fact that it's on the very bottom of the board list doesn't exactly encourage people to see it, either.

Yes, they can be replaced. Make sure you get one that doesn't like to chew on cords.

@Octane: Hilarious. Tickled me deep, that did.

If you want an official replacement go to the nintendo store. Sorry I didn't check your nationality but I'm sure most of the Regions have some universal store that sells replacement parts. Otherwise you can buy a knockoff from Amazon. Also you roommate's cat sucks and they owe you money.

assuming walmart exchange policy is like targets(90 days) then you can exchange it for another Wii U IF you haven't invested a lot into your current Wii U. They rarely check the device when returning it. That is my personal experience with retailers like target and walmart.

If you can't get it exchanged, you could buy a new power adapter from the online official Nintendo store for $25 I think.

@MegaMari0: Eh, I'm not the type to 'game the system', as it were. It's just really unfortunate that the cat came by to mess up more of my electronics. Already lost a $50 headset to him that my roommate refused to even partially cover.

@smm1: I did already check, and I could get a refurbished cord for $12, but the shipping still bumps it up to nearly $20. I was hoping to avoid spending quite that much, but it seems that the only place to even get these adapters is online...

Once you replace the cord I suggest getting some Tabasco sauce and lightly rub some on television cord, just put a dab on a cloth and rub it on the cord. Cats don't like the smell of it and if he/she does try to chew it they won't anymore. I had to do that with my cat and she don't chew cords anymore.

I'm not at home right now, but IIRC it's just a simple USB "B" cable. These can be picked up anywhere for just a few pennies. You don't need an adapter - you can just plug the cable into a spare Wii U USB port to charge.

Something like this IIRC - http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Black-USB-2-0-Mini-5-Pin-B-Data-C...

@zitpig: Oh? I'm going to have to check that out. If it's true that'll be a life saver. If it's not, at worse I've wasted seventy five cents.

@Tasuki: Gonna need to try this, too. My whole room's gonna end up smelling like the stuff, though xD. Got several power cords and chargers and whatnot I've been struggling to keep away from the cat.

They don't work, I just checked.

You should just buy a replacement cable and give the receipt to your roommate, if you break it, you pay it. Quite an easy concept to grasp. How would he feel if you broke his stuff and refused to pay?

I have a docking charger for the gamepad and 2 wii remotes, and it was pretty inexpensive iirc. Pretty sure it was made by Energizer. That would get rid of the wire problem for your gamepad, at least.

@Therad: That's a shame, then. And he's not the type to really care about much beyond himself, from what I've seen. He's asked for money and never even mentioned paying back (and hasn't even attempted the times I have given him money), complains on facebook that no one asks him to go out anywhere with them but never even leaves his room since he's constantly playing WoW, complains (also on Facebook) that he 'can't talk to us' because we have our doors constantly shut even though it's to keep his stupid cat out and he still has fully functional hands to knock with, and when I told him his cat chewed through my cables he told me it wasn't his problem and I shouldn't have had cords lying out, yet he got uppity when his cat got sick after eating a candy cane wrapper and a Christmas ribbon and says it's our fault for 'leaving trash out', even though the cat clearly has a problem of chewing on/eating things that he shouldn't. So yeah, not really the reasonable or understanding type. Only reason I'm here is because rent is cheap, and split between three people makes it even cheaper.

Edited to remove mild profanity because I forgot I'm on a Nintendo-centric forum.

Eh, I'm getting off topic. Don't want to turn this into a rant. My question has been answered, advice has been offered, and I've got a new adapter on the way, so this thread's goal has been accomplished. Thank you all o7.

Cats are the worst

@AlexSays: Roommates who can't keep THEIR cats in check are the worst. I have a cat. I wasn't a cat person EVER until my now fiance wanted one. Now I see they can be pretty beneficial. Karma is a B...especially for a roomie like that @Chobin and good luck with the power cord

Your best bet is to purchase one directly from Nintendo. Warranty won't cover this as the damage was due to irresponsibility.
