Topic: Metroid Prime (series) is somewhat overrated

(Keep in mind when reading that I played all three of these games on their respective systems within a month and a half about 2 years ago for the first time) I love Metroid. I love Metroid Prime. I own almost every first party Gamecube game, and many others, and it is one of my favorite games for the system. It was revolutionary. But people praise the series as a whole for being so revolutionary, when really it was only the first entry. Now don't get me wrong, I loved Prime 2 as well, and 3 was ... ok, but the series seems to get more praise than it deserves. Prime (1) took the formula of the best game in the series (Super Metroid, which a played years after the Prime games), and translated it to a platformer/first-person shooter. It was a very daunting task, but they managed to do it. It became a huge success among fans, and people new to the series. There is nothing wrong with giving praise to this game. BUT, there were a couple things wrong with it like the bland environments, but they were understandable for a new developer like Retro, and since the game was more about he translation from other games in the series. Then came Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. It was very similar to the first game but with spin attack, and a dark version of Aether, the planet you explore. By no means was it bad, but it didn't really add anything besides the dark world, which wasn't the best mechanic to add. It was still a very good game, but my biggest complaints are the lack of anything new, and more bland environments. I guess I could excuse this game. Then came the big one, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption... This game was very disappointing to me, and my brother. I can see why people like it, the controls, maybe it was their first game in the series, a nice narrative, a grand finale. But this game is almost inexcusable. It added almost nothing again. The environments were still very Bland, and don't think "Metroid has always had bland environments", probably because of graphical limitations. This game was a huge letdown for me because it was also very linear, some boring/tedious missions, and it tried to force me into caring about the other hunters, when I didn't even know them. I know I never played Hunters, but it shouldn't matter, they should at least build up some sort of liking for at least one of them. I did like the Valhalla part, it was kind of survival horror-ish which was pretty cool. Again, in no way is this a bad game, it just doesn't deserve all it's praise. Someone has to agree with me that, although these games are great, and the first one is revolutionary, the could be a lot better.

Every game has its flaws, that doesn't make it overrated. It deserves its praise, just as every other game does. I personally would like to see the word "overrated" be done away with.

Well i dont reallly get why u dont like em so much but i thought they were all really great. Especially Corruption with the wii controls. This game series was of course better on wii but still i loved it. Well opinions differ

In 2002 the first Metroid Prime was great. It was a perfect feeling and I never thought the environments were bland. I was surprised by the details, the visor functions, the creatures you could scan and the water pearls on your visor.
But you are right: The second and third game weren't revolutionary at all. We were getting old wine in new bottles. Great games but not so astonishingly new.

I just hate the controls in the Gamecube one... if it wasn't for it, maybe I would like Metroid Prime.

I loved the first game. Seeing and playing a new take on the franchise was very cool.
I found the second game to become really tedious and by about 2/3 of the way through. I think I finished it, but I honestly can't recall.
By the third game, I got maybe a third of the way through before I realized I had absolutely no desire to play it any more.

They are all great games, no doubt. But for me, I didn't care for them after the first one. I just didn't have fun playing them.
I actually had much more fun playing through Other M (don't hate me, @bezerker99 ! we're still bros! )

Its more of a problem that games from the sixth gen aged horribly. Halo is another game that was lauded at the time and is considered generally good looking. However when I go back to play it now its pretty crappy. The mechanics hold up well but not the graphics.

I'd say Prime suffers this but probably falls even worse since aiming isn't traditional twin stick gameplay. Screw you gamestop/nintendo for ensuring I won't get to play these game until the ninth gen.

Lately any game with more than 10 fans is considered overrated, even if it was considered underrated ten minutes ago.

Actually the opposite, since twins stick FPS is worse than pointer control or mouse while Prime Trilogy/3 does have the pointer controls (and the first 2 games at least have novelty, even now) also lol aiming

Also I completely disagree that GCN era graphics haven't held up. ...some of them haven't (Sonic Heroes comes to mind) but they held up better than N64 era at least and last time I checked Prime 1 and 2 in particular are still really good looking and has a level of worthwhile detail that even current games often fail at for one reason or another. Honestly because a lot of games still used primary colors, I'm expecting them to hold up far better than the vast majority of at least pre-2009 HD titles.

Metroid Prime is a unique game but it can not be compare with other FPS games, because its not that type of game.
MP as a FPS game is awful, but as First Person Puzzle game, its ok.

The only game that's just like Metroid Prime but better is Dead Space, which has fun puzzles, along good shooting.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

I'm talking the gamcube. Having to hold down a b button to aim was annoying in the first metroid prime.
