TBH I don't understand why everyone is so worked up about how many levels are included in the game. There is basically an infinite supply of levels. What does it matter if it's 100 or 1?

Because a lot of people are just as interested in more sidescrolling Mario action than they are in creating their own levels or wading through the server in an attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff.
I was looking forward and remain hopeful, to a huge challenge with the premade levels included with this title. I'll fool around with level creation and likely will download some levels, but it's not the primary appeal here for me.
Playing Nintendo-created Mario levels, some of which promises to be the most difficult this franchise has seen, is where the appeal rests for me.
...Then just get New Super Mario Bros. U, then...if you're getting this just to play levels Nintendo has made then....well, whatever, your money, I guess.

Keep it PG-13-ish.
@GoneFishin: If you're primary appeal in a Mario level creation tool is the default stages it comes with then you're doing it wrong.
Hardly
The point of this is gameplay. Ultimately regardless of where each level originated from, isn't that why we're here?
One can be excited about this yet still be realistic and realize that they're likely not going to be the best at creating levels (Although it certainly will be fun trying), or eagerly anticipating wading through loads of Super Mario Bros. level 1-1 recreations in an attempt to download something entertaining.

Considering that many such as myself have already fully gone through that, how is this a productive answer?
I find it far more peculiar that some have such lopsided interest in this that they'd apparently be fully satisfied doing nothing but creating levels. For most, the truth is going to be somewhere in the middle. A level creation utility is great and definitely what sets this apart from the pack, but ultimately, the game itself is also a key portion of the experience.
A sizable selection of pre-made levels that not only challenge the player but helps reveal the editing possibilities that the player has available, is a crucial part of the experience that will make this a well rounded experience.
Just because they say dozens of pre-made levels doesn't mean there won't be 100. I think there still will be 100 pre-made levels in game. 25 from each game. If not 100, then 80 in total(20 from each game). Either way, I think there will be a substantial amount of levels from each game.
But yeah, main point of the game is to play user created levels and to create and share your own.
This made me think. We know Nintendo will deny the upload of creations that have lewdness and suchto them, but will Nintendo moderate levels that are just recreations of levels from past games? Will Nintendo recreate these levels themselves?

With the amount of inappropriate stuff that happens on the Miiverse stage in Smash Bros, I don't think they'll be able to keep it all under control.

I thought they were using a system where players themselves could report inappropriate levels.

As the person who started this war of words I never said that people should be buying this game just to create levels. I just said it was odd that people are so hung up on the amount of levels will be built into the game. Because for me I couldn't care less how many levels are built into the game. The game will have a community built around it who will create levels for it. Levels are automatically sorted based on how many people played them and how many attempts it took people to beat. So what's the issue?
Like others have said, if you want a Mario game and only want the "authentic" levels? You're kinda missing the point....

I just found a pretty cool app game to hold me over until mario maker comes out. It's called pico pico maker ex and I think it is available for Apple as well as android. Here's my first couple levels I made. http://piko77.com/en/game.php?id=df889d0cf580dd84252a2431d9f4...

Hardly, I was emphasizing that one goes in hand with the other.
This game isn't just about creating levels just as it isn't about just playing levels. Again, I find it peculiar that some apparently only see any appeal in half the package and don't see why anyone would be more looking forward to additional 2D Mario platforming action being made available on the Wii U.
Thankfully, I'm sure that Nintendo doesn't agree and has been striving to create a cohesive game, not just a good level editor surrounded by an otherwise poor experience.
Personally, I'll want to jump in and just play when this releases. Hopefully, people's creativity will shine through if online level sharing is setup half decently to allow the cream to rise to the top to extend that experience even further. And I'll certainly be messing around with the level editor myself.
But ultimately, I still want more 2D Mario sidescrolling action on my Wii U. Thus the importance on a decent slate of built-in selections being available on day 1 to get me started.

You're not listening. What I'm saying here is that I don't understand why people are so hung up on how many levels will be in the game from the start. The game is built around users creating and sharing levels so you will have plenty of levels to play. The included levels are really neither here nor there because there will be thousands of levels at your fingertips online. Sure it's nice they're putting some built in levels front and centre, I want to be able to find the NWC levels for example. But other than that? I couldn't care less.
As I said, if you're worried about the number of levels included in the package you are missing the point. Completely.

Second, those pack-in levels would likely give users ideas so that the fraction of the uploaded stages 300 to 500 that are variants of 1-1 in SMB1 doesn't exceed 10%. Sure, older 2D Mario games have their fair share of sample levels, but these levels could get the users to think more "outside the box"... while not trying to mix chocolate, vinegar and bell peppers to one dish. (I expect stages 1 to 300 to be little else than flat ground or MARIO written with blocks.)
As someone who played Mario Paint as a kid I highly doubt it. You know what the first thing you did in that game was? Well usually you'd cover the screen in ridiculous patterns. Do silly animations involving cats and such. Go to the music composer mode and fill the whole thing with cats and pigs. That's what happens. You didn't go and intricately recreate specific things in that game and if you did it was with cats and it was awesome. That's what people will do with Mario Maker.
The only difference with Mario Maker is that they will then have to actually beat the level before they upload it. That'll be the lowest common denominator for a Mario Maker level. Someone will fill it with every enemy and item possible and then have to actually beat it. I actually expect online to be flooded with levels more along the lines of this:
