Topic: Is Super Mario Bros. U too hard for a 5 y/o?

I need a game fit for a party where lots of kids are involved. It's a huge bummer that Mario Kart 8 isn't out before the end of May. With a previous experience I found that 3D world is quite hard for a 5 year old sometimes. Often because they don't know where to go. That's why hopefully Super Mario Bros. U is the answer. Is it too hard for a 5 year old though?

It's okay if they're playing with someone older, as they can just press the 'A' button and go inside their bubble during difficult parts.

I don't think so. But it would be a good idea for someone to play with him/her.

No the difficulty is fine for a 5 year old.

Since the Wii U has reverse compatibility with Wii games and their are multiple kids at a party involved perhaps something akin to Mario Party or any of the other party games on the Wii would work. Their are some good Wii U party games as well, but the idea of trusting a room full of kids with a Wii U gamepad makes me shudder, so were it me I'd just hand out Wiimotes and let them go at it with some good Wii party games while the gamepad stayed under protective glass.

Well, from the perspective of a child, most things are more difficult. I found a lot of NES games more difficult at that age and now I can beat them without breaking a sweat

Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze is your answer.
But really, NSMBU is probably a good choice. While I found it harder then any of the previous NSMB games, it's not frustratingly difficult. Like some have mentioned above, try playing it with them. Maybe you can help them out on the gamepad. It's probably good for them to play difficult game anyway. You'll probably be impressed by how good they get. Also, kids seem to love the NSMB series. I know a 7 year old who didn't really like SM3DW, but loves any of the NSMB games.
If its a party, Nintendoland might be a good choice too.

My 4 year old son stomps all over NSBMU and 3D World. He loves both games and has serious Mario skills for his age. I let him play games maybe 3-5 hours a week, but he's a natural. Regardless there is not doubt in my mind that both games would be great choices for a party (I'd lean 3D World, personally). My kids love the multiplayer in Nintendoland (perfect for a kid's party), Game & Wario, Rayman Legends, and Sonic Racing Transformed. They also adore Pikmin 3 multi, but that's not ideal for a party environment.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the difficulty. Kids are adaptable and should be raised to enjoy conquering a challenge with support and guidance. I clearly remember jamming away at Super Mario Bros., Contra, and TMNT: Arcade at my fifth birthday. The last thing we were concerned about was how tough those games were when 7 of us were crammed in and around the recliner mashing buttons and yelling at the screen.

For me it's actually the other way around. I find myself lacking discipline when I enter a difficult part, whereas me being a kid, I used to try again and again and I would become very good.

You want party games? Nintendo Land and Wii Party U is pretty awesome. I own both of them and they actually give us a great time!

Nintendo fan since 6 years of age.

Personaly I would suggest New Super Luigi U too if you get New Super Mario bros. U if they play as Nabbit, it shouldent be too hard

However you have to beat Super Luigi U in a time limit and if they're not holding the run button it could be rather frustrating for them.

I would say that NSMBU might be a bit tricky for a 5 year old. Try a party game.

NSMBU is the easiest Mario platformer so far in my eyes, but it realy depends on the kids since there is much difference in skills from kid to kid, my sister used to play Donkey Kong Country at that age without to much trouble, but myself at that age would have struggled with it

Got 45 NES, 22 SNES, 53 N64, 195 GC, 50 Wii and 12 Wii U PAL games

nsmbu would arguably be harder for 5 year olds to play together. if you have 4 of them playing at once there will be lots of crying over getting pushed/thrown into holes, stolen power ups etc.

i would suggest mario 3d world over mario u, my daughter just turned 5 and she loves it, and plays it lots with her neices who are a few years older. of course she plays lots of games and being my daughter she is a natural at it.

something like disney infinity might actually be a good choice, but its only two players at a time. its much more forgiving though as you can never get a game over, you have infinity lives. the thing to note though is that to play together in a level pack, you need two characters from that game pack world, so you would have to buy another character for either monsters u, pirates, or incredibles, or get a toy story or cars pack that comes with them. of course they can always play any characters together in toy box mode, and there are even tons of levels you can download in the toy box share that have all been created by other players and pre approved by disney. my daughter was sad that there was no frozen level packs after we got the two girls from frozen, but there are a bunch of frozen levels you can download.
