Would I be able to download it in Wii mode? I've tried playing Wii games on the Wii U and have had problems, especially since they only work with a regular Wii controller. I've gotten New Super Mario Wii to work but Mario Sunshine just doesn't work for some reason with the regular Wii remote.
I hope they release this game because to me, it's the best RPG mario game. I downloaded Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga and it's nowhere near as good or engaging in my opinion.
I hope so too, but Konami and Capcom seem like the only two 3rd party companies interested in licensing any games at all for VC. Parts of SMRPG are owned by Square Enix, who have a total of zero games on the Wii U VC.

A: How the royal hell did you get Mario Sunshine into a WiiU?
B: Of course gamecube games won't have Wii controller support, it's like asking to use an N64 controller to control a snes.

I am also interested in how you got Mario Sunshine to work on the Wii U. If you download a SNES game in Wii Mode you will need a classic controller or a SNES controller that plug into the Wiimote.
Not to pile on here, but the original Wii did play Game Cube games. That in no way means that Wii mode on the Wii U will play Game Cube games...
But to your point, I agree that Super Mario RPG is far and away the best Mario RPG out there. The Mario & Luigi games can't even compare.
My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."

Their entire SNES line (excluding SMRPG I believe) is on the JP eShop for Wii U. The problem is that they don't feel compelled to release any of their games onto the eShop of other regions. I even asked them myself via email about it. Regarding titles for the NA eShop, they (Square Enix Holdings Co., LTD) responded that they have no plans because Square Enix of Japan is focusing on other projects...... What actual work is required to bring them over? The only thing I can see is possibly the manual, but the rest, as far as I'm aware, is dealt with by Nintendo via their encapsulation of the games and emulator, to which the games are already made.

The Wii U can play Gamecube games if you have the home-brew channel installed on your Wii Mode. Maybe the OP is using that? And no, it's not emulation, they run natively on the hardware since the Wii U pretty much has a Wii inside it.

So it's just a question of whether the Gamecube games could be controlled using Wii Remote + Classic Controller or other controller combinations as you can't use the Gamecube controller on Wii mode I assume?
OT: Just downloaded Super Mario RPG on the Wii Shop today, I'm downloading titles on Wii Shop regardless of whether they have scope of ever seeing a Wii U VC eshop release, if it does get a Wii U VC release then I'll pay to upgrade if necessary.
Never actually played the game before as it never got a PAL release originally but I'm convinced I'll like it as I'm into games like the Paper Mario series and the Mario & Luigi series.

Wii U still can't play Gamecube discs. It's technically still a ROM

I don't hope they release it on the Wii U. When I was playing it on the Wii I had to switch back to using a CRT for it to work properly.
The Gamepad lag will make it even worse if anything.
One frame of lag will make it worse? That's better than most TVs.
It add's a frame of lag to what the TV already has. So in my case it would be 3 frames. (When I wasn't happy with it last time it was 2).
That's not true. The two displays run independently of each other, and many people have conducted tests that prove this. In some cases, the Gamepad has less lag than the TV does.
