I personally play with just the gamepad, only because I hate constantly switching between Wii-motes and pad for the map.
What the what?

It's kind of annoying switching between GamePad and Wii Remotes but I do it anyways, since the GamePad's controls don't seem to work as well as the Wii Remotes'. (And the nunchuks)

I play with all three! (GamePad, Wii Remote and Nunchuk)
What I mean is that I use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk for the main controls, and when I need to use the GamePad, for Go Here! function, checking fruit etc, I hold the Nunchuk in the same hand as my Wii Remote and navigate using my fingers. Oh, the GamePad also stands on a table to the left of me.

I play with a Wii remote and a nunchuck, two pro controllers, and the gamepad.
I put the two pro controllers under my feet and use them when I don't feel like using my hands.
Wiimote, with Gamepad sitting on its stand within easy reach. I never use the go here function, just the map, so I just once in a while take a look On the map for fruit.
I wish I already had this game so I could have just written "naked".
I plan on using the Gamepad map and Wiimote-nunchuck combo when I get it though, I'm a big fan of maps but not of the Gamepad touchscreen. I've played the W101 demo for about 2 hours now w/o touching the screen, the right stick works fine and I don't have to look down in the heat of battle. I only use health potions after. Maybe I'll try the touchscreen next time to see how it feels.

Gamepad, just because I've heard so many complaints about it and figured I'd get it out of the way before I inevitably switched to Wiimote.
...and I'm fine with the Gamepad. It's not bad. It has a learning curve, and I'd have mapped a few buttons differently, but it's not bad at all. I'm rocking my way through the game and very few mistakes can I fairly chalk up to the controls. It's usually me and my poor strategy.
I really love this game so far. It may end up surpassing the first game as my favorite in the series. Even if it doesn't, I'm very happy with the direction this one took.
However, The Gamepad works pretty smoothly as well. And as mentioned "Philip_J_Reed" it's only the slight learning curve you may need to watch out for. Otherwise it makes for a perfectly capable controller. And currently I'm playing it two-player. One person is in charge of the Gamepad exclusive mechanics, and the other plays the actual game with the Wiimote/Nunchuk combination. And so far the game is a blast!
If you play mission mode, go here is basically a necessity if you want to get platinum medals. Not so much in story mode, but I like to be as efficient as possible.
I'm apparently the only one, who plays the Game with the GamePad and Off-TV-Modus. GamePad and TV is a very good combination, but you don't really need both screens and so the Off-TV-Modus is equivalent. I love playing in the bed and I'm very happy about every game with Off-TV.
@PloXyZeRO: If you play the missions in Co-Op, you can't use the "Go here" function. For this reason the missions for two players are more active, faster and with fewer interrupts. And you can use the Off-TV function as well with two players.

It's how I've been playing all my Virtual Console games recently. All snuggled up in blankets with Hot chocolates nearby to keep me even warmer. There's something really rather lovely about playing Earthbound in the palm of my hands. I wish Nintendo could market their console with that in mind. Since their console is essentially a tablet controller, though with the power of a fairly decent computer.
Though back to Pikmin for a brief moment then . . . The rock Pikmin are adorable! :3
WiiMote+ &Nunchuk. I started with the Gamepad, but it can't aim without moving.

I tried the gamepad for all of 5 minutes but the whole having to move while aiming thing was a nightmare and I quickly dug out the wiimote + nunchuck. In the later part of the game the gamepad came in real handy though for a strategising a bit better, I haven't played mission mode yet but I expect it's pretty much vital to use to get the platinum medals in that mode.

Oh yeah, I know. This actually made it HARDER for the most part to get platinum medals in two player. It only really helps because you and a second player can simultaneously kill enemies, but with the third captain inactive.
