In all honesty, they really shouldn't care. They shouldn't have to worry about optimizing old games they won't make much for in return

If Nintendo were to actually put in new online servers for Mario Kart DS in the Wii U VC version to replace the dying ones, then I would certainly buy it. After all, Mario Kart DS is one of the best games in the series.

Single player content, yes, but I thought the track designs were boring compared to Wii and 7.

Yeah, that's the main reason.

It's kinda funny, an employee from Natusume told me the same thing almost word by word when I asked her how slim were the chances of their DS games getting fixed for their hypothetical rereleases on the WiiU.

Chrono Trigger, please!

no no no no

They should seriously limit the number of VC games that are ports of other games that could be VC games. They've already announced one, that's one too many IMO.

^^

i really don't care, i just want to play Chrono Trigger on the Wii U (and yes.. it has to be the Wii U VC.. not interested in buying the Wii VC version)

Plus the DS version of Chrono Trigger isn't just a mere port, it is the definitive version of the game!

Well ignoring the fact that DS games ran at a lower resolution than SNES games then maybe. With Chrono Trigger in particular which was had a good DS port. The problem is that a lot of those sort of ports of older games weren't that great. Or at most they were good but they had to deal with the limitations of the handheld.

Even with Chrono Trigger if given the choice I'd still by the SNES version without a doubt. However games like Super Mario 64 DS or Super Mario Bros Deluxe? Why would you want ports like that on the VC service when the VC service is more than capable of reproducing the original as it was if not better. It really doesn't make much sense to me. I'd rather see the VC service seriously limit the number of games that are ports of games that existed on a system that's already on the VC service.

Chrono Trigger DS port should get a 3DS VC release. Wii U should get the SNES version, just to allow better off-tv play.

Super Mario 64 DS could be good because of the extra levels, characters and minigames, but they'd need to add Circle Pad support to make it worth getting (which of course they wouldn't because this is Nintendo we're talking about ).

Didn't they have a function where the touch screen could be used like an Analog Stick? Maybe they can add circle pad support through manipulating that.

I can't wait for Star Fox Command to come to the Wii U VC. That would be awesome

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Why would you want the version of Super Mario 64 that doesn't use the analogue stick? I mean it was fine as a work around when the hardware was limiting but the hardware isn't limiting anymore. They can release the full version as it was. They could even, in theory, include Rumble support which was in one of the versions of Mario 64.

There's plenty of stuff on the DS before you even touch on the ports. Going down the Metacritic list there's GTA, Mario Kart, Mario & Luigi, Zelda, Advance Wards, Castlevania, New SMB, Meteos, TWEWY, Dragon Quest, Elite Beat Agents, Kirby Canvas Curse, Layton....... why go with the ports? There's plenty of other stuff there.

The problem is that function was terrible. Whenever you removed your finger, it re-centered the neutral position wherever you next placed your finger.
(Nintendo included this plastic slider on a strap in the original DS, that they wanted you to attach to the console for that purpose. But I think they abandoned that idea because I haven't seen the slider since.)
And the fact you had to cover the map with your finger to use the pseudo-analog was a secondary problem.

...You know the touch screen control was optional, right? lol
Anyways was gonna bump this, wondering if anyone knew when this would happen. Kinda figured they would announce it alongside the GBA ones.

Just saying that they can and will map D-Pad controls to the control stick if you decide to use the Pro Controller...

I wonder if this is how most horizontal DS games will look like on the Wii U Gamepad?

Why would anybody want to ? If it originally used a dpad then use one.

Well, it may be hard to emulate a link cable... But I don't see how wireless communications with real DS games and online interactions would be problematic.

The GBA link cable can be emulated, it's just that Nintendo doesn't want to put the effort to do it.

And why would they? They need to focus on the new games more because that makes them more money

I'm sure we'll be able to use the analog stick in place of the d-pad if we wish just like we can on the Game Boy Player, the current offerings on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console, DS games on the 3DS, etc.

I usually prefer to stick with the d-pad, but in some cases, I'm glad the option is there. Playing Time Pilot and Gyruss on the GBA Konami collection for instance. I don't know why since it's still just 8 way digital control, but I always use the GameCube's analog stick when playing those two games. And I like the analog stick for the biplane in Pilotwings on the Wii U's Virtual Console.

Anyone hoping for wireless linking to DS or 3DS hardware is just dreaming, I imagine. Would be nice to see wireless local multiplayer features remain operable on Wii U VC DS downloads, but I don't think it's very likely.

Apparently NA doesn't deserve DS games on the Wii U VC.

No. Its that the Game Pad is unsuited towards DS games except a small select few.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

GBA hardware didn't have wireless multiplayer. Any support there with linking up with actual Game Boy Advance hardware to the Wii U would've required releasing a specialized USB cable. Here with DS downloads, the hardware necessary for communication is built-in so it theoretically stands a better chance of happening.

I still firmly believe that such a feature can be safely ruled out as being included (if for nothing else, the challenge of maintaining stability with original hardware talking to an inaccurate software reproduction of the DS running via the Wii U). But at least it's a reasonable, albeit distant hope where as a USB Wii U to GBA link cable obviously belongs squarely in the domain of fantasy.

The GBA did have a wireless adapter, even though not a lot of games support it.

I'm aware of it, but it wasn't built into the GBA's hardware and was compatible with so few games and was so uncommon, it simply wasn't worth acknowledging.

Yellowtails wrote:

And multiplayer DS games most likely wouldn't work locally and would have to be online, which won't happen.

Local multiplayer DS gaming if it was included with Wii U Virtual Console downloads of such titles as Mario Kart DS, doesn't have to take place over the internet. The Wii U's Wifi module is more than capable of directly communicating with the DS and the 3DS, which is the hardware that both handhelds rely upon for local multiplayer.

I don't see how DS games are going to work on the Wii U. It's like they just announced it without even knowing how they're going to do it. I'll just stick to finding DS games in cart form.

What don't you understand about DS games on the Wii U? Some are obviously better suited than others for making the transition, such as games like Mario Kart DS that use the upper screen and d-pad/button control almost exclusively instead of a touch screen heavy game like Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks where your attention is largely focused on the touch screen. In those instances, I'm sure they'll make the leap just fine.

And when there are native Wii U projects releases that have you mostly staring at your gamepad instead of your tv (I'm thinking of the Scribblenauts games in particular), I'm sure there will even be a market for games like the two Zelda's as well although I personally think it defeats the point of DS games on the Wii U if all you're basically doing is looking at the gamepad screen all of the time.

It's even easy to see how games like Yoshi's Island DS and Contra 4 could make the transition by displaying both screen's stacked one on the other on the tv. It obviously will be far from full-screen, but the typical HDTV is so large these days that even something like a classic vertical 3:4 arcade game displayed on a 16:9 HDTV, such as this screenshot of Satan's Hollow running on Midway Arcade Origins for the 360/PS3, blows away the size of the actual arcade monitor used in the original cabinets (19" on the full size machine, 13" on the cabaret version as I recall were fairly standard dimensions back then).

About all I can't imagine are games that spread the playfield across both screens while relying on touch control, such as many of the minigames on Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros. I suppose one screen could be stacked above the other and be streamed completely to the gamepad screen so you can give equal attention to both, but the size of the picture will be far less than even a non XL DS or 3DS system.
