I have three Mega Drives, though - one MD I and two MD IIs.

Just wanted to update you all in honour of recent threads 1 and 2.

Should I get a Genesis?

James, idk, but you sound like the kind of person who'd have a Genesis... didn't you ever play Sonic the Hedgehog or something? :/

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

Sadsack_Awesome

Aren't Mega Drive and Genesis the exact same console?

What are you talking about? They're clearly completely different systems. Just look at the name. Genesis vs. Mega Drive. See, completely different.

You really should get one James. I hear that Genesis does what Nintendon't.

I can't think of many Mega Drive games that were released in the US but not Europe right off the top of my head. Of course you being the mega Sega fan, I'm a bit surprised you don't have one. Thanks to you I picked up a WonderMega and the Japanese Sonic CD release.

One is NTSC and the other is (presumably for the purpose of this discussion) PAL.

My gram has a dusty old Genesis in her celler, with ab out 9 or 10 games. I like to play Sonic the Hedgehog every now and then.

You should get one.

IIRC, the MegaDrive (Japanese and European nomenclature) was renamed as "Genesis" in America because of some legal disputes, at least judging from what I looked up. I could be wrong, though.

To each their own

MetalMario

I don't have one either....

Oh well. I would really only need it for Sonic. Not much else I liked.

Why would you rename a system in two different regions? That's just silly. Then everyone would get confused and talk past each other and crap.

Nope it's definitely two different systems.

Yes you should get a Genesis Model 1, the first one that says HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS on the top. I prefer the Model 1, I like the classic styling much more.

@feenie: actually, according to wikipedia, Sega was unable to get the rights to 'mega drive' in the US back then. it happens all the time with regards to games and TV shows, why not systems? :3

What a load of crock. You can't bring that weak Wikipedia action on me dragon.

i hope no one actually thinks i don't already know this lol

Mega Drive is clearly a superior console to the Genesis in every way. Genesis is American, and therefore spells words like 'colour' incorrectly. Mega Drive has a monocle and a cane and an air of sophistication.

@Raylax I always compared the Mega Drive to a fast car, not just because of its name. BLAST PROCESSING! SLICK METALLIC LOGO! 16-BIT HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS!

...Adding a monocle to that makes for quite a clashing image.

Also I have a working generation 1 Mega Drive, probably modded because I can run both NTSC-U/C, NTSC-J and PAL games on it.
