Topic: Where Is A Good Starting Point For the Resident Evil Series?

I've never played a Resident Evil game before and would like to, so where is a good starting point? I'd prefer to play on CURRENT generation systems (DS, 3DS, Wii, Xbox 360), but I'd be willing to track down games for my old GameCube if I have to. So, where's a good starting point?

Currently Playing:
Xbox 360: Arkham City, MW3, Gears 3, UMV3, Battlefield 3
PS3: inFAMOUS 2, LBP 2. Rachet & Clank: All 4 One, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3

Personally, I'd start with the first game, not Zero. RE0 to me seems like a supplemental to the whole Arklay Mountain storyline.

The series is a web of storylines, so you'll probably have to play them through multiple times - but at least you can earn interesting bonuses on playing through Resident Evil games multiple times.

Wait, is the original Resident Evil just for GC or is there a Wii version?

Also, how is the port of RE 1 for DS? Isn't it called Deadly Silence or something?

They may have re-released RE1 on the Wii (they did for Zero), but I don't know whether they tacked on Motion Controls. If I recall, Zero Wii was a straight port.

The first one, probably. But only if you're old enough to get drunk, as that's the only way you can truly enjoy it.

Umbrella or Darkside Chronicles should give you a good understanding of the series as a whole.

Well, part 4 is clearly the best of the series but it (and RE 5) are much more action oriented than their predecessors. If you're looking for a start into the older style of RE games then I'd recommend the Gamecube remake of the first game.

RE1 is on the Wii, but it doesn't have motion controls. It's called Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil (there's also Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil Zero). There are a few different control options (Wiimote held NES style, Wiimote and nunchuck, classic controller, and Gamecube controller), but there aren't any motion controls.

I haven't played the Archives games. I watched some youtube videos, and I was annoyed with the loading times. If I'm annoyed by watching a video, I think actually playing the game would be very frustrating!

The only RE games that I've played are RE4 (on Wii) and the two RE Chronicles rail-shooters. I highly, highly recommend RE4 on the Wii. It's an amazing game. The motion controls are perfect. I liked them better than the controls in Metroid Prime 3.

The lead character in RE4 is Leon. He was also a lead character in RE2, but based on what I've seen in the Chronicles games, you're not losing any understanding of the story or character by starting with RE4.

I think I'll start with RE Archives: RE first. I guess I'm ok with the fact that it doesn't have motion controls because I think it would be hard to control in a third-person game. I guess I'll play with either a classic controller or a GameCube controller, depending on which method's better.

Is the iOS version of RE 4 a direct port of the console versions, or is it based on the game?

Not a direct port.

Also start with REmake, or if you can't find it 1. It's the starting point of the series.

If you don't want to play loads of remakes and ports, just go with Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. You don't need to know every detail about the series to enjoy it. Otherwise, as others have said, start from number 1.

I'm buying a PS3 soon. Are all the games on PSN? I plan on starting the series with 2. That one has always interested me.

I was thinking about downloading Resident Evil 4 off Games on Demand, but then I saw how much memory it took up. I have a 4gb Xbox, and games don't take up that much memory so I can download stuff, but if I got RE4 there would literally be no memory left. However, then I saw RE Code: Veronica X, and it didn't take up that much memory. Is this a good starting point for RE?

Short answer, yes. Assuming you don't mind 'em being dated.

No.

The PS1 games won't be able to be emulated on the vita at launch. That may change for the western launch though.
