Thinking about getting the ROG Xbox Ally X….i really don’t need it bc i have a Steam Deck. But I just love handheld gaming. In April it will be six years since I have had a drink and I think this would be a cool gift to myself for this achievement.

@BonzoBanana I can only speak re: the OLED model, but games look absolutely fantastic on my Steam Deck. IMO 1080p for that screen size is unnecessary and flushes resources down the toilet that could otherwise go toward providing a more stable play experience. Kinda wish Nintendo has opted for the same with the Switch 2.

Yes 800p is fine for such a screen size. I also don't think the Switch 2 needed to be 1080p. Maybe it was a feature the market dictated because many would be disappointed if it was less but I feel the reality is 800p is perfect. Maybe Nintendo knew that if they priced the console at a high price they had to provide a 1080p screen even though the screen itself has a very poor spec to reach their profit margin expectations.

I think the Switch 2 screen is just big enough that it's justifiable and DLSS existing largely negates the resources issue. Even moreso given there's seemingly a bespoke, Switch 2 specific, lighter DLSS model being used

Of course if I had been designing I would've gone with a smaller (but still VRR/120Hz) 720p OLED panel. Probably the only thing I would've changed about it. But I can also understand why they didn't go that route. People care about resolution and screen size more than anything else when it comes to displays. If you're selling a thing, especially to a broad market, those are the things you'd try and maximise

I advocated and argued for a 720p Switch 2 screen before it was revealed.

What I failed to consider, however, was that the screen would be a whopping 8" in which case, actually yes, 1080p is justified. Especially with their proprietary 540p > 1080p "DLSS Lite" technology. That's no more expensive than rendering native 720p, and I'm not confident a 360p > 720p DLSS Lite model would be the best choice if limited to basic HD.

There's also the fact the Joycon are larger (a huge improvement I'd say) which kind of necessitates the larger middle tablet to accommodate. A smaller screen would mean going back to smaller Joycon, or having v1 Switch era fat borders around the screen which would look ridiculous and surely be accused of wasting space when a larger screen could have been used instead.

For bespoke PC handhelds, I maintain 720p is optimal, unless the screen is as large as NS2 in which case 1080p would be justified.

I take your point but now that I have my own Switch 2 I do feel the screen is a little too big for a portable and there has been a fair bit of feedback from Japan that those consumers find it too big so I feel the next Switch 2 revision will be smaller presumably a lite model and then 720p would be a better option. I have a Teclast T50 mini android tablet and that is 800p with a 8.7" screen and its not noticeably lower resolution than Switch 2 plus its also much more responsive and has adaptive sync that goes from maybe something like 4fps to 120fps. 4fps for reading magazines, books etc. It has a TDDI panel so the GPU talks directly with the display panel to make it highly responsive and no lag at all it seems. There is a bit of noticeable input lag to many games on Switch 2 it seems, not terrible but noticeable compared to other systems, it does feel like the display panel is a little slow and occasionally you see blurring or juddering a bit or something going on with the image quality, smearing maybe.

It's good enough but not great possibly designed to motivate people to upgrade to OLED when available. It's definitely inferior in motion and response to the Steam Deck LCD screen. Although I only bought a PS5 recently because I was worried about price hikes this year I'm loving all the PS4 games getting free PS5 upgrades. I'm not as keen to pay for upgrades on Switch 2 despite many Switch 1 games looking at bit rough on Switch 2 without them. However from what I've heard Skyrim plays better as the Switch 1 version on Switch 2 with less input lag.

I'm not sure what the perfect size for the Switch 2 screen size is but I would guess slightly bigger than Switch 1 OLED, maybe 7.2-7.6". I can honestly see a Switch 2 revision with an OLED screen going down in size to improve portability.
