What are your thoughts on this? This been a hot topic over the last couple of days.

So basically in a nutshell Rocket League and Minecraft can both be played across PC, Xbox, and Switch but Sony is refusing to take part in this. They also did come out with a statement on this and it was really crappy. I myself own an Xbox One S, PS4, a Nintendo Switch, and a Super Powerful gaming laptop (GTX 1070) and I just don't understand Sony's logic on this.

All they say is PR talk - they just don't want to share their 60 millions users with Microsoft, they don't have anything to gain from it. It's just business and not surprising.

SFV and FF14 both have cross platform with PC but in this case Xbox is not in the equation. Basically they don'y want to provide more online population for free to their direct competitor since they are in the lead by far and have nothing to gain from this.

@pandarino Yeah but that includes Nintendo and PC, no matter how many ways you slice it this seems like a loss. Eventually people are going to start noticing that they're the odd man out.

@Red_Dragon PC and Nintendo are not really in direct competition with PlayStation. They do cross play with pc on some titles.

Oh wow. I didn't think this was true considering Sony has done cross play in the past, but it prompted me to do some research and you're right.

I'll be the first to say that I love cross play (even if it isn't always perfect). I don't care what system people own, we should all be able to game together and tear down the stupid console wars barriers. Plus, cross play keeps online communities alive longer.

It's gotta be a money/power thing. Sony doesn't want to play nice with the other consoles now that they're top dog (like Nintendo in the 80's). And the funny part of all this is that the hardcore Sony fans who HATED 'Micro$oft' for anti-consumer crap they pulled with the launch of Xbox One will defend it endlessly even though it's horrendously anti-consumer and divisive for the gaming community as a whole.

It's super annoying for me personally too. I have friends who own PS4s and I'd love to be able to play Destiny 2 and Rocket League with them...but nope.

Nobody mentioned the Gwent card game, so I'll do it because it adds to the conversation.
It is cross play between Ps4 and PC and between PC and Xbox but not Xbox and PS4 and I think the reason behind it it's the same: Sony isn't too keen on cross-console play.

@R_Champ all the 3 companies keep making horrible anti-consumer moves. This is a bad one for Sony, and have you noticed how many of the multi-platform games shown at Xbox's conference are "launch exclusive" (meaning they paid to keep a title from being released on the rival platform for a month or two) or how we are supposed to pay two times for the same Virtual Console title on WiiU and 3DS/ pay full price for Nintendo remasters? There are no saints and sinners ...

@R_Champ I personally have an issue for the people who won't be able to afford or buy another console to play with their friends. But when I think about the possibilities that this could open up for Sony I don't see what they wouldn't want to do it. From a business perspective this doesn't seem that smart either, so OK these guys have 60 Million console owners, but why would I buy say Rocket League or (Insert any cross-platform indie game) on PS4 when I could get it on Xbox, Switch, or PC and enjoy cross-play with a lot more people?

Look at it this way, say Monster Hunter comes out on both Switch and Xbox. Imagine being able to play Monster Hunter on your Xbox One, and then taking your online character on the go with Nintendo Switch, how awesome would that be? This could open up some serious things down the road, I hope Sony thinks hard about this.

@Pandarino I do agree with what you said about the remakes with Nintendo, but I feel that Nintendo is starting to turn the corner since the Switch launched we'll see what happens long term.

@Red_Dragon I generally agree with you but, say, Rocket League is already cross play with PC on Ps4 though, I think you're missing their angle from a business point of view. Ps4 + Pc is (at the moment) the largest user base by far, so they don't gain anything by opening to other consoles. This might prove very short sighted but we don't know what they will do in the future...
