On March 15, RPG Maker VX Ace is due for release. I've been playing around with the review version of it, and I utterly adore it. It's a very intelligent bit of software, and allows anyone of any skill to come up with something.
As you get better and better at it, there's all kinds of places you can take the software; it uses Ruby as the programming language.
I barely started. I am dumb at stuff and that is one of them.
Yeah, but there's quite a few RPG Maker games I really liked. Final Fallacy, A Blurred Line (I've heard conflicting info on whether if pt. 2 is still being worked on), Kirby Warrior RPG 2: Dream Edition (the Kirby fandom loves RPG Maker to the point that there's a 4+ year old forum for this specific series that isn't completely dead), Kinectic Cipher, some madeforlulz games etc.
And I'm looking forward to KWRPG3 and Forever's End. But I honestly haven't played a single RPG Maker game in like 3 years (hell, I don't really play any free indy or fan games anymore)
I used to dabble in OHRRPGCE a few years back, then my attention was drawn towards RPG Maker. I wouldn't buy it though, because this was before I had disposable income.
Speaking of games made with RPG Maker, I quite liked Last Scenario and Exit Fate (I'm not sure if the the latter was made with RPG Maker), although I'm not really following the RPG Maker scene.
Yup...never completed a game either...always run into resources/scripting problems and I rarely get any help...soooo, yeeeaaah. lol (I have XP though, don't really wanna buy another program, lol)

Keep it PG-13-ish.
I discovered RPG Maker XP when I were 10 and kept working with it few years then I had a little pause and tried other programs like Game Maker and Unity. Now I'm just downloading newest version of Unity as you can get iPhone/Android thing for free so I can try making games for them. I myself don't even own that kind of phone. I don't need all the stuff that new phones have, all I need are calling and text messages.
just downloaded th demo a little while ago. I have to say i like the new features added in, and am absolutely extatic to see that it still uses ruby! can't wait to get the full when i have some cash lying aroumd. I actually finished a few games with XP but never VX. I think it's because i felt like VX was forcing an ugly overworld on me, but i dont feel like that so far with this one!

And it seems learning Ruby is the only way I'll probably complete the game I'm imagining in my mind. Since it has some somewhat complex mechanics.
I first started learning scripting with Ruby. It was suprisingly easy as there are a TON of tutorials online. It's probably one of the easiest scripting languages out there that i have come across. The only one that i can think of that was easier was python, but that could have been because i already had some scripting experience with ruby.
Anyway messing with the demo is proving to be awesome. I hate the slime graphic though, bleh. Can't wait till i buy it and am able to use my own.

Maybe it's because I'm currently learning Java, one of the more "Organized" coding languages, but Ruby's syntax looks horrendous! I get the intent was to focus on how human brains understand logic and turn that into a scripting language, but I would like to think our brains are a bit more organized!
A Bit More OT: I've heard about RPG Maker and I've seen a bit of it. It looks like an interesting tool, but I would rather put my effort into something like Gamer Maker or Unity, as they aren't necessarily specialized for a specific genre.

Scripting to me looks like it would give me a headache. xD I gotta look into it eventually though, since I do wanna become a game developer at some point.

Seriously though, I love RPG Maker games and I really want to try to make something with it someday.
Same here. Tried Game Maker at one point, but I found it a little less in-depth than I liked. Made some nice small mini-game like games with it anyhow.
Never heard of Ruby as a programming language though, but this looks worth trying. Might download a demo.
Are you required to code the whole game? I've tried coding before but I'm not all that great.
No coding necessary. There's simple drag-and-drop and pre-built scripts for most normal stuff you'll be doing. Coding's only there for people who want to make really advanced games.
