Shirtless men but not shirtless women? That doesn't sound very equal!

Something about X is putting me off.
I can't figure it out.
I played the original (and still own it), but it seems different somehow.

I will say, I remember the original criticism of the game having negatives against the build a character for/as the main player in that it hindered the story. While I agree somewhat, I don't see why Monolith couldn't have done something like what Mass Effect had, a fully customized character but locked to a name to make the story the way they still wanted.

This "silent" protag around everyone else speaking is annoying. We get the barest of choices to make, so why not just do it the other way?

The one I had in mind was the CandC medium suit but it's not exclusive to that 🤣

I kinda hope if they make an X-2 and we get a custom protagonist, they'll give them voiced dialogue options along with a better character creator. Monster Hunter Wilds showcases how you can have a custom character that's fully voiced.

@VoidofLight
Mass Effect 1 also had a custom character and had a full story.

Eh, not really into custom main characters having voice lines.

I actually think they managed to give your protagonist a surprising amount of personality through the limited dialogue choices. Some of them are really funny like using Lin as a human shield.

What I actually find more immersion breaking is how every cutscene replaces your party with Lin and Elma, plus one other person in your party who just stands there statically the whole time. Maybe it was too complicated to programme to have these cutscenes include your actual party members but Mass Effect was able to do this in 2007 lol

Given that I'm also a fan of Fire Emblem and Zelda, I'm not going to complain about silent protagonists.

The justification Monolith gave in interviews though, is that they wanted players to coexist for the online aspects of the game and you can't really do that while having them play a role that's central to the story. That's not much of a consolation if you're playing it solo offline, but it make some sense if you're leaning into the teamwork.

For what it's worth, I'd think of Elma as being the main character. She's always there for the story missions and most of the important side quests, after all.

I get that, but online in this game is barely a thing.
Sure, you can have someone join you but there isn't really any interaction. The Other Plyer Character is nothing more than a glorified NPC

@Spider-Kev Yeah, I don't fully buy it as necessary, given how many other games have far more interactive multiplayer yet let you play as a set protagonist. Still, that's what they said:

"But along the way, we adopted the notion of having the game loosely connected online, and that became our mantra. We changed the main protagonist to an avatar, and had to abandon many of the things we had built up to that point." - Tetsuya Takahashi

You can have a read of the full interview here:

https://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/wiiu/xenoblade-chro...

Maybe they had grander ambitions for online play at some point but they had to be scaled back for what was already a very ambitious game to make? Or perhaps Takahashi just really likes taking design cues from MMOs? There are certainly a lot of those in the game's combat and background systems.

Whatever the reason, I'd be surprised if it's something that they repeat in future given how resolutely single-player XC2 and 3 are.

Should have a copy in my hands tonight.

Exciting, but who knows when I'll get around to it.

That backlog, yo.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,537 games (as of December 22nd, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)

@Jam777
You must not play many games then ...

I just don't care for the silent protag Player Character in a very involved story

Link (technically not silent) is fine. Mario is as well.

But with XenoBlade, it just comes off as wrong.
Especially when you can choose your character's voice!

The worst aspect of the entire XenoBlade series, for me is all the talking everyone does then it swaps mid conversation to text only.

That's freaking asinine!

The dialogue in Zelda games support Link talking. Nothing in Mario games does.

Read the NPC dialogue.
They react and respond to Link and what he says.
Pretty much since A Link to the Past

Silent to us, but not in game

OMG these damn camouflaging enemies still drive me insane...and of course I haven't played this since Wii U and can't remember what an enemy and what is just a stick in a tree or something!
(at least those Mortifole things are still easy to spot. lol)

Also posting this screenshot for those that want to change the enemy targeting setting and couldn't find it, that was driving me insane before. No idea why "All Enemies" was the default. lol

NPCs can have conversations with Cross too, and you also hear a lot of dialogue in battle.

Standing there saying nothing is just for the cut scenes.

I'm like 35ish hours in. Want to stress im really enjoying this overall. Probably my favourite Xenoblade game so far. But man, I feel like in every game in this series I experience the same brutal difficulty spikes. The same tear your hair out in frustration moments. Bump against the same baffling design decisions. It's like Mono can only allow you to enjoy their games for so long before they have to drop some BS into the mix which does nothing but spoils a good thing.
