I always buy day 1.

Why deprive myself for years and years over a few hundred bucks. Gaming is my one hobby, and new systems don't come around every weekend. It'll have been nearly 8 years from Switch launch by the time Switch 2 drops. I could never pass that up.

If there were zero exclusives for the first 3 years, and no BC so Switch 1 games didn't run better, maybe I'd wait. But if even 1 exclusive is on Switch 2, I see no logical reason to deprive myself. It's too exciting to watch my favorite console of all time get a successor, and just turn away and try to ignore it day after day for years.

I just preorder and that's that.

Love the switch. Sold away Xbox,ps and pc.. its just distracting me from playing on my favourite system 24/7. Having multiple systems made my gaming life fragmental, got so much better when i decided to focus 100% on One system.
Will keep and use the switch for many years. Bought 3 new games today alone, and backlog is huge. Switch 2 will be bought day 1, will be Nintendo for the rest of my gaming life.
Hopefully Nintendo will keep on inviting indie games and coop with Microsoft

I understand that. I own every console and yet only ever play Switch, and now, Switch OLED and SteamDeck OLED.

I don't think I'll ever be buying a PS console again. Or an Xbox console. Or a gaming PC. Deck OLED and Switch OLED covers it all. Switch exclusives. PS exclusives. Xbox exclusives. Valve exclusives. Multiplats. Gyro aiming. Portable play. TV play. It's all there.

I used to feel I was missing out so I always got PS day one and even Xbox. Got PS5 and XSX day one, with years and years of Gamepass stacked. And yet.... never use it. Never use any of them.

There just isn't enough time for them all, but more importantly, portables have degraded my desire to play on systems chained to the tv. Especially when those very same games release on a handheld that can be connected to the TV or played portably. With PS and Xbox now putting games on Steam, and the Steamdeck OLED offering hybrid play for them... there just isn't any reason to buy those consoles in the future.

Gaming has rapidly changed this generation. I went in a multiconsole gamer who owned everything. Exiting this gen I'm a Switch/Deck only gamer that has access to 99.9% of every game worth playing, with gyro aiming, portable and tv play and no desire to have it any other way moving forward.

I may also sell my PS5 and Xbox Series X. Not my gaming PC, just cause it's useful as a PC also. But ya, there comes a point you recognize your preferences and realize you don't need every single gaming console ever conceived. Keep what you actually play, get rid of the rest.

I do foresee SteamDeck becoming a little less useful once Switch 2 drops, as I expect most multiplats will then start releasing on Switch 2. Still, there'll always be some games it misses, so it'll always have some utility for me regardless, even after Switch 2 drops.

Woah, I had no idea Wonderful 101 After School Hero was on Switch!!

I thought it only released on Steam. So I just grabbed it, and it's incredibly fun! You guys gotta try it. It's only a few bucks I think. I got it free by kickstarting but ya, it's super good.

@DennisNOR @JaxonH Yeah, ever since I got the Switch in 2017, I've been focusing almost exclusively on that. Though for me personally, it was a continuation of me just sticking with Nintendo. I've been like that since the 3DS and Wii U era. I didn't get a PS4 or an Xbox One because there wasn't a lot of compelling games for me on either system, and I've always had the most fun with Nintendo's games anyway. So I don't need a PS5 or a Series X/S... it makes more sense to stick with the Switch, and then whatever the next Nintendo console will be when I get that.

Nothing wrong with that. Everyone has different taste, and with Nintendo providing a very distinct flavor of games in their catalog, some ppl just won't find other platforms attractive. As there are some who don't really find Nintendo platforms attractive. It's just games. Recreation in spare time. Do whatever entertains you best.

I was same way 10 years ago. Didn't have much interest in games on other platforms. And to be fair, I largely still don't. Though nowadays I have developed a taste for a certain subset of other games. Many come to Switch with quality ports but some don't. Steamdeck covers those.

It took many years of gradually exploring various other games to see what I liked. Batman Arkham Asylum and City that just came to Switch, that's a good example of what I like. Baldur's Gate 3 as well, though that isn't on Switch. It'll likely get ported to Switch 2. Divinity Original Sin 2 is on Switch though and it'll scratch that same itch if you're curious about Baldur's Gate 3 and why it won GotY. Divinity Original Sin 2 sits around a 92-94 on Metacritic itself and is a spectacular game to play in the absence of BG3. Or, Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 are on Switch. But they're very dated. Like 25 years. Still fun but Divinity is the better bet imo.

With Switch 2 though you'll likely have access to most everything, save Xbox and PS exclusives. So any game you do wanna play that's not on Switch, if you just wait, there's a good chance it'll get a Switch 2 release. Like, I can almost guarantee all the Final Fantasy VII Remake games will release on Switch 2. Same for Dragons Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds. Some will be day and date, some won't, but they'll almost all come at some point.

Man, all this talk of going digital is depressing!

I can say with utter certainty: I will always buy physical. Always. Until the day Nintendo puts out a console without a physical drive, of course lol (honestly, at that point I'll still play Nintendo's new games, but I'll probably just become a retro gamer for the most part)

For me, it's not displaying things on a shelf or even collecting to sell stuff at higher prices in the future. It's never been about that for me. Honestly, it's just the basic fact of actually HAVING the games. As long as I have the cartridge and a working Switch, the game's gonna work. No internet needed. No accounts needed. Just the cartridge and the system.

I'm glad that Nintendo at least seems committed to sticking with physical for their next console. We'll see where the world stands in another 8ish years, but I'm staying physical.

rallydefault

Ralizah

I think there's a place for physical gaming. Especially with how sketchy consumer rights are in this area, and how some people still struggle with not having access to high-speed internet where they live (not at all uncommon out here in the country, for example).

That said, my default preference now is to download games, and when the Switch 3 and PS6 are digital only consoles, it won't make a bit of difference to me in terms of appreciation for the devices.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

JaxonH

@Ralizah
For sure.

There will always be a subset of gamers who prefer physical. As for myself, I had just gone so many years without owning anything, ever since a teenager, that when I finally got my life together in my late 20's and started gaming, physical games were appealing as something to own and touch, with resale value (even if it declines and is not an investment). Like, after not having ANYTHING worth more than $2 since age 17 due to selling it off to support my habits of the time, physical games made me feel like I actually owned possessions again.

But now that phase has passed, and I realize the fears I once had of, "what if my system dies and I lose my games" (which WAS an issue for 3DS/Wii U before account based purchases) are no longer a concern since I can re-download on any other system. And in 20-30 years, even if you can no longer re-download, truth is I won't have any interest in doing so anyways. Just as I rarely if ever play any of my games from 20-30 years ago, in 20-30 years I'm not gonna care about playing Switch games. And any select masterpiece I do wanna replay will easily be running on emulators at that point like Metroid Prime Trilogy is now on Deck, or will have received a superior remake/remaster on more current hardware. And, worst case scenario, I just fire up my Switch OLED and play on that.

Had this hoarder mentality of accumulate physical goods to make up for all the years I wasted. But now I'm just sick of it. Portable console especially benefit from digital as your entire library comes with yoy everywhere. I love that. And getting up to find the game you want to play on this shelf, putting the previous game away, and doing that over and over... that gets VERY tiresome.

Untitled

Partial downloads for Switch physical releases also helped accelerate my acceptance of transitioning to full digital. As did SteamDeck. As did dumping all my physical 3DS games to my modded 3DS and realizing the convenience of a full digital library.

I hope physical sticks around as long as possible for those that really insist on it being the only way they'll play, but I'm so far beyond being over it.

We're gonna need a successor to the micro SD though. Kioxia's 2TB releases within 90 days and that's the limit of SDXC. And we need higher read speeds moving forward. Either SD Xpress or straight 2232 NVMe SSD. But it needs to be expandable for consumers.

@JaxonH I'm just starting to get my life together now. Granted, the context surrounding that is ENTIRELY different than yours. I'm thankful I've never suffered from a substance dependence problem. I respect you immensely for tackling that, talking about that struggle without shame, and building a life for yourself that is grounded in self-respect.

While I get preferences for physical media, and agree we need additional consumers protections for purchasers of digital licenses, I see a lot of deeply rooted anxiety in much of the discourse on this issue online. I think building collections can be a fun hobby, and I get why people would like actual products instead of just downloading licenses, but at the end of the day, I think it makes sense to interrogate why you're in this hobby in the first place, and what you really want to get out of it. Because the bitter, angry attitude about this from an increasingly greying minority of the core market seems unhealthy.

Switch 2 NEEDS to ship with an SSD out of the box, IMO. Maybe a small one, but that's the place the industry is in right now. Even handheld PCs are rocking SSDs now.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

JaxonH

@Ralizah
Ya, the level of emotional distress I see sometimes comes across as a bit over the top. At the same time, I can relate because I used to feel that way. I think my thought process was that collecting was as much fun as playing the games, so taking that from me felt like a huge blow. But now I just wanna play games. I guess each individual will have to get past that on their own time and terms. I can say, once you take inventory of what you're in the hobby for as you said, and realize playing games is really what matters, it's so much easier to let the physical aspect go. Much of the fears cited can make for reasonable arguments on paper but, I think in the long run they don't really have much bite. But being honest about that fact with yourself isnt easy when youre still caught up in that mentality. Once you get over it you realize all those reasons you had were more excuses than legitimate concerns, convenient to justify what ultimately boils down to a desire to collect more than a desire to game. And there's nothing wrong with that. I just personally reached a point where actually playing the games is my primary focus. Of course, I do still prefer owning digital as opposed to say, a Gamepass subscription. But that's because I'm not good about playing games right away, and sometimes games sit in backlog a long time before I get back to them. Sub models put a time limit on getting through games and I don't like that pressure.

As for an SSD, I'm of two minds. One, I agree Switch 2 needs an SSD. On the other hand, unless they relegate the microSD to BC games only, and include an expandable 2232 NVMe slot, and mandate cartridge games install onto the SSD, I don't think it'll do us much good as games won't be designed around it. It'll more be a convenient limited storage area with faster loads. Which is cool, but I'd prefer to see games designed with it in mind. If games run on microSD and cartridges, then skipping the SSD won't bother me as much. I'd still like one but, I'd like to see a complete switch over. Extra expandable 2232 slot so storage can be upgraded with up to an extra 2TB, and the microSD is only for videos, screenshots, and Switch games via BC.

But Steamdeck games run pretty well off microSD still so it won't be the end of the world if it doesn't use one. And I honestly think it won't just because Nintendo takes incremental steps. Idk. Maybe it'll have one but 128gb or 256gb. I want the expandable slot though for a full 2TB.

The PS5 and XSX have spoiled me. The load times are nice. But I question how much the Nintendo fandom would care...whether or not the NG Switch will come packaged with an SSD? If Nintendo are still going with physical releases, wouldn't they just package the NG Switch with 256GB (I would hope that's the minimum) of flash memory and call it a day?

Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)

@Magician
I mean, I do think most people care and certainly want that. I know I do

I just don't think it'd a deal breaker is all. Steamdeck runs games off microSD and it works just dandy. Granted, it does also have an SSD in the higher priced models but, half my games are on my 1.5 TB microSD.

I hope we get an SSD and I imagine most of the fanbase who is aware of the benefits also wants one. So ya I think ppl care. I just think if it doesn't have one, its not the end of the world. Loads will take a bit longer, bit that's hardly something to get emotionally enraged over imo.

Hope for it but I'm prepared to accept it won't.

I haven't experienced XSX's ability to make multiple game states immediately playable, but I can't deny the idea of that appeals. Animal Crossing is the sort of game that I'd happily throw 15 minutes a day playing in-between playing other games, but the load times on AC:NH aren't great for hopping in and out of it, so if I could just hold it paused in the system memory while simultaneously playing something else, that would be something I think I'd make regular use of.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

My absolute picks for this sale that can't be ignored.

Keep in mind, there's some KILLER games on sale, but anything that's $30, I don't care how good it is, I'm making a list of the ultra-deep discounts only. So ya, Persona 5 Royal and Trails of Cold Steel 3 and Crisis Core FFVII for $29.99 is recommended as much as they come, but this list is to see how far $100 can stretch focusing only on the absolute best games on ultra-deep, orange clearance sticker discount.

  • Borderlands Remastered + Borderlands 2 + Borderlands The Pre-Sequel = $9.99

3 of the absolute best FPS ever made, playable offline solo or with friends local wireless or online. Gyro aiming. Great graphics and performance. If you don't have these games on your Switch, for $10, there's no reason to hold off any longer. That's $3.33 each.

  • Vallyria Chronicles 4 = $7.49
  • Vallyria Chronicles Complete Edition = $9.99
  • Valkyria Chronicles 1 + 4 Bundle = $9.99

One of the finest non-grid based turn based strategy RPGs ever made. The original was long regarded as one of the finest PS3 exclusives of that generation. Don't take these games for granted. We are extremely blessed to have them on Switch

  • Unravel Two = $4

I kid you not, this game is one of the best indies I've played in my life (it may be backed by EA but it's an indie through and through). Playable solo or co-op with a friend. Me and my bro have some of the fondest memories of this game together, him helping me that final world and group of stages. For $4 you absolutely MUST give this game a whirl

  • Pillars of Eternity = $12.49

This game is so seriously dope, I can't believe I slept on it so long. It's been patched up considerably too. I put in a few hours the other night and it played flawlessly for me thus far. If you are intrigued by Baldur's Gate 3 but don't have a way to play it or are waiting for the inevitable Switch 2 release, this is a fantastic game to scratch that same itch.

  • Darksiders Warmastered Edition = $8.99

Avoid DS2 and DS3, imo. Ports aren't that great. But this one is. The 60fps mode has no noticeable latency either. The 30fps mode may look a bit better and sharper but, the extra latency from post processing ruins it imo. It's a phenomenal game though. If you want a mix between God of War (old school), Bayonetta and Dark Souls, this is your huckleberry friend. (Though I should note Darksiders 2 is only $8.99 and it IS playable, it just has aggressive dynamic resolution at points that make it come across kinda low res. This is most noticeable in handheld mode). Darksiders Genesis is excellent though. Get that too if you can.

  • Megaman 11 = $9.99
  • Megamall X Collection = $7.99
  • Mega Man Legacy Collection = $7.99

Forget the 2nd parts of these collections. The first part is where all the bang is at. These 3 are non-negotiable. If you're a diehard MM fan like me, ok maybe grab the part 2 of them also. But part 1 of Legacy has Mega Man 1-6. Part 1 of X has Mega Man X - X3. Only games really missing out on are Mega Man 9 and 10 from Legacy pt 2, but where you rank those is up to you.

  • Metro 2033 = $3.99

One of the finest FPS on Swirch. Story driven and I think based off books from an author iirc. Gyro aiming, incredibly fun gameplay, intriguing world and story. For $4 I can't even imagine why anyone would pass on this game. It's so good.

  • South Park Stick of Truth = $8.99

Well regarded as a top tier turn based RPG, this is an absolute gem if you can stomach the crude humor. The sequel is fantastic too, it's grid based strategy ad a hybrid SRPG/JRPG, but again, I'm selecting games with orange clearance sticker prices only here, and it's like $18 (though that DOES include the $30 season pass so...)

  • Star Wars KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic) = $7.49
  • Star Wars KOTOR 1 + 2 Bundle = $13.49

An all time great from Bioware. They don't make em like they used to, that's for sure. If you like Dragon Age, if you like Star Wars, if you like Mass Effect, or even Baldur's Gate 3 for that matter... this game might be up your alley.

  • Quake = $3.49

Man, this game is just straight up fun. Remastered HD graphics and gyro aiming, this here is peak classic FPS

  • Quake II = $3.99

Even better than the 1st. Get both. But if you have to choose, get this one.

  • Ace Attorney Turnabout Collection = $19.99 (includes FIVE different games- the AA Trilogy and The Great Ace Attorney Duology, all combined)

What can I say. 5 AA games for $20? If you don't own these games yet, you just scored a massive W with this deal

  • Resident Evil Revelations HD = $7.99

One of my most cherished games. The Switch version incorporates optional gyro aiming, as well as optional motion gesture reloading with joycon (may not be as efficient as the button but it's so much fun, and immersive). RAID mode allows the entire game to be played in co-op with a friend, online too. Just have to beat the level first to unlock the RAID mode version. This is the first game I beat on 3DS, then beat again in RAID mode with my bro. I love it so much

  • Resident Evil Revelations 2 = $8.99

Also a must have. Graphics are unbelievably good for a Switch title. Same gyro aiming options and motion reloading gesture options, but RAID mode is unlocked from the start this time and is different levels than the campaign. I don't care what anyone says- this game is 🔥 and I've enjoyed it nearly as much as the first.

Resident Evil 5 = $9.99

Great game. Gyro aiming. Easy must have

  • Persona 4 Golden = $12.99
  • Persona 3 Portable + Persona 4 Golden = $23.69 (personally I'd hold off on P3 and wait for the remake on Switch 2, but that's just me, you may want this version still)

Legit may be my favorite JRPG of all time, up there with Final Fantasy X and Xenoblade Chronicles X. For $13 to have this gem on Switch? If you still don't own the game after this, what are you even doing

  • Persona 5 Strikers Digital Deluxe = $20.99

Ok, this is a bit high to include here. But it's the deluxe version and the game is just incredible so, I thought I'd mention it.

DOOM 64 = $1.99

Guys. It's $2. A timeless N64 classic Remastered in HD with gyro aiming... you absolutely MUST own this one in your collection. For real.

  • Doom Slayers Collection = $14.99

Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 3, Doom 64, DOOM 2016 (reboot). All of them with gyro aiming (I think? It may be Doom 3 doesn't have gyro, not that anyone cares about the black sheep of the franchise anyways). Killer deal.

Valiant Hearts = $4.99
Child of Light + Valiant Hearts = $7.49

Of only 3 games to use UbiArt, these games were a surprise and delight. Valiant Hearts is emotionally potent and will pull on your heartstrings so much. $5 is worth it just to experience that. But $7.50 for the pair is a no brainer.

  • Bioshock Remastered = $7.49
  • Bioshock 2 Remastered = $7.49
  • Bioshock Infinite = $7.99

I know they didn't include gyro for these games, and I personally play on Deck OLED for that reason, but honestly, it still plays very well on Switch. I dang near beat Bioshock 1 Remastered on Switch in fact. Whether you buy for Switch or instead opt for Steam or Deck for the gyro, just be sure to play these games. They're so good.

  • Trials Rising = $5.99
  • Trials Rising Gold (season pass) = $8.99

I know handheld mode can sometimes experience some brief framerate stutters, and yes that sucks. But the game does not work on SteamDeck, at all, and Switch is the only viable way to play handheld for now (unless you buy one of those weird, expensive and niche Windows handhelds). I put around 600 hrs into this game on Switch. It stands as one of my top 20 favorite video games of all time. Yes, right analog works incredibly well in place of the analog shoulder button for gas. This game is just one of those rare gems. It's insane how underrated it I'd.

  • Assassin's Creed Anniversary Mega Bundle = $39.99

Includes all 7 AC games on Switch and all their expansions and DLC:

AC EZIO TRILOGY

  • Assassin's Creed II
  • Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
  • Assassin's Creed Revelations
    ACIII COLLECTION
  • Assassin's Creed III
  • Assassin's Creed III: Liberation
    AC REBEL COLLECTION
  • Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
  • Assassin's Creed Rogue
  • Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak Deluxe Edition = $39.99

Also a bit pricier for this list, but keep in mind, Rise base game was $60, Sunbreak expansion released for $40, and the Deluxe edition added another $10. This is also one of the best games of the generation, designed ground up with portable play in mind, and easily makes the shortlist for which games every Switch owner should have on their system. Whether you play solo, or with friends locally via local wireless option, or with friends or randoms online, Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak offers it all. I have 900 hrs in the game across the demo, base game, expansion, and a bit of replaying a new file on Steam.

OK, I'm on the hunt for a microSD card for my Switch OLED, but I've been having trouble finding the right one. I looked up the microSD card FAQ on Nintendo's support site, and they recommend a card that's UHS-I compatible, and this...

Transfer speed 60 - 95 MB/sec (the higher the transfer speed, the better gameplay experience on Nintendo Switch)

I've seen cards with a higher speed than 95 MB/sec, however... because of that, would those screw up my digital games somehow while I play them? If they do, I want to have the highest speed that Nintendo themselves recommend, but I'm not having much luck finding a card with exactly that speed. I do want a good amount of storage too, of course. I have a lot of digital games from the eShop, including some games that are also on retail. I did hear that the Mario/Zelda-branded cards are a bit overpriced, too... any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

@MarioLover92 Switch is such a big consumer of micro sd cards that usually they will specify if they work for Switch. Extra speed won't harm anything, the main goal is simply to get a high quality one since the very cheapest cards tend to be a bit scammy.

Personally I have a SanDisk 1TB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I 120MB/s and it works great. I see no gameplay difference whether a game is on the card or internal memory. That one is a bit pricey currently at $80, but they also have 512 GB at $40 and 256 GB at around $20. There are other companies of course, I'm just used to sandisk and they are one of the very reliable brands. There are plenty of reviews and comparisons for cards used specifically for Switch. Even NintendoLife has an article like that: https://www.nintendolife.com/guides/best-nintendo-switch-micr... That article has a 1TB Lexar card for $70 which seems like a pretty good deal and I assume it works fine since NintendoLife is advertising it.

@FishyS All right, awesome. Thanks for your help! Yeah I agree, I would rather have a card that's from a reliable company like SanDisk, they seem to know their stuff when it comes to SD cards. I think I'll have most of my digital games on my microSD card, and the update data/DLC for my physical games on my Switch's internal storage. Thanks again!
