Topic: We need more Switch Pro-Controller colors.

I fully admit I got super jealous. Look at all those awesome looking controller options! I know Xbone has been out longer, but... Switch has: Black, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2 and Smash. That's it, right? That means we went all of 2019 and now 3 months into 2020 without a single new pro-controller color. Why?

Where's the Luigi's Mansion green? Where's Fire Emblem blue? No Pokemon controller?

And simple colors too. Where's red, white, purple, blue?

It seems like they stopped releasing new joycon colors too.

Is it because of Switch Lite? Because of that scaled down (in my opinion, inferior) console getting new colors that we get no new colors for the OG or pro-controller?

At least Animal Crossing got a console. Though I really wish I could buy the dock and joycons separate...

I wouldve absolutely loved a lm3 green or links awakening green themed controller. I guess maybe they consider the power A themed controllers sufficient? Not sure but im with you.

@NintendoByNature I hope not, because those PowerA ones just aren't very good. The quality is much lower than the real first party controllers.

And Nintendo has a history of many different color controllers from the N64 and Gamecube says.

@Heavyarms55 I agree with the Pro Controllers, but apparently you haven't seen the orange/purple Joy-Con released in October. They also have a blue that's new, included with an ARMS yellow. They have the new Animal Crossing Joy-Con, which as you said, they don't sell separately, but that's still new colors. So with that, we have:
Neon Red
Neon Blue
Gray
Super Mario Red
Splatoon Pink
Splatoon Green
Neon Yellow
Smash Gray (a cop out with just little lines added to the gray, but still different)
Pokemon Pikachu Yellow
Pokemon Eevee Tan

I had been trying for all the Joy-Con until I realized that when I got my "inferior" Switch Lite, I never play handheld any longer with my OG Switch, it just sits in its dock 100% of the time. I have zero use for Joy-Con, aside from a few games which require them or make them more interesting. 2 is plenty. The Lite has 5 different options with the Pokemon one being discontinued, so 4 in the market as of now. If I were a parent, there's zero chance I would buy them an OG Switch. It's far too delicate for kids. Even with regular careful use, the Joy-Con stop click locking into the unit and just easily slide on/off. I almost had my Switch unit fall to the floor when holding because my right Joy-Con decided to stop click locking. Luckily, the left held strong, so I was left with a Joy-Con in my right and a hero Joy-Con in the left with the Switch attached. I like the Lite so much more, I wish they wouldn't have nerfed it by not allowing it to dock. It's a far better, more solid system overall and absolutely made to combat the easily broken OG Switch by kids.

@SkullDragr If the Lite could dock, I would have nothing against it. But that is a deal breaker for me. But that's a different conversation. I do remember the joycon colors but they've still slowed considerably for new colors and you have to admit, pro only having 1 base color and 3 special editions is sparse.

@Heavyarms55 And you can buy the AC dock and Joy-Con separately. Check ebay. I'm sure the prices are well inflated, but it depends on how much they are worth to you. When Smash and Pokemon came out, I bought several of the systems and pieced 'em all out on ebay. People who didn't want to drop $400 on a system happily paid $175 for the pair of Joy-Con, $100 for the silk screened dock, heck I even sold the empty box for $40. None of those would have been worth that to me, but someone bought my Ring Fit Adventure for over $170, so the market determines what these things are worth to those who want them.

@Heavyarms55 Especially since the colors they have done have been pretty boring. Smash had white handles and a little half hearted silver logo. Xenoblade had red handles and a little logo. At least the Splatoon one has some splatter effects on it. I would LOVE more pro controllers in different colors. I have 3 black and one Splatoon 2.

@SkullDragr I do like the ones we have, I have one of each. I just think more options would be great.

And yes, I know that Ebay is an option of course. But I meant that I wish they sold the dock and joycons on their own, new. I don't think I should have to buy a whole new console for just the dock and controllers. I know the new console has some details on it, but from the pictures I've seen, they're pretty subtle.

On a different note, I'm really surprised that there have been so few special editions or alternative docks. Even the Wii U came in both black and white! There were several Gamecubes too, purple, black, orange, silver and at least in Japan, red, and several special editions.

Given the translucent matte finish and design of the Pro Controller, it shouldn’t be that much a of mental stretch for the people at Nintendo to look back to success of the N64 translucent multi colored controllers. Especially since the 90s are back in some design styles it just makes sense to make Pro Controllers in at least different colors like the N64 controllers.

Fun Fact: At the time Nintendo, just like today, aspired to Apple’s aesthetic and business model. At the time Apple was producing bright colored translucent iMacs and Mac Books and Nintendo applied that design ethos to the N64 with the line of bright colored translucent N64s. Nintendo later went with the white & gray color combo and minimalist design and box art style for the Wii and Wii U after Apple used it a part of it’s iconic branding.

@NapiLinkJC You know, I never made that connection before - because in the N64 days I never paid any attention to anything Apple did, but that makes a lot of sense.

And to be fair, from about 2008 onward - almost every electronic company decided "hey, colors are lame and for children. Let's make every device either black or white and be done with it!"

I'm really ready for that trend to die. I was really bummed with the design of the new Xbox, I get that they are really embracing their "box" image but dang, I really hope no one got paid for that "design".
