Topic: Virtual Console: am I the only one that doesn't really need it?

@ThanosReXXX Yes, but people can ask whatever they want. I think that is just a way to generate interest in the line. I hope it doesn't fire backwards. Because they plan to release 8-16 bit games and people are asking for huge games of a 128-bit machine. Impossible? I don't think so, but neither any time soon.

@Ryu_Niiyama Some very good points. Oh, and there is complaining about BC, although that isn't exactly the same as VC, and it is more predominant on the PS, because it has a lousy backward compatible catalog, and it isn't nearly as extensive as the one on the Xbox.

But even on that console, certain people will complain, because no matter how many titles Microsoft puts on the BC list, some people will always want that one title that isn't on the list, so they complain about it not being included, because they always want more, or are looking for that niche title that they loved so much back then, but which just isn't (commercially) viable to either re-release or make backwards compatible...

@Moroboshi876 It's not people just asking: it's an official poll, meaning Sega is gauging interest in these titles, and they will more than likely do something with the results of this poll, otherwise they wouldn't even bother doing a poll in the first place.

@ThanosReXXX Yes, you're right, but we Nintendo fans have to admit that while the Big N gets criticism from the outside because of the childish image it has sometimes, or because of the release of technically inferior systems, it gets criticized by its very fans too, in this case for what it doesn't have, instead of focusing on what it does have.

About Sega AGES, well, I hope you're right, although personally would like to see 16-bit era arcades re-released instead of games that I already have on Saturn or Dreamcast.

I've been thinking this lately as well. With all the collections/compilations coming out has lessened my desire for VC as it appeared in the past. Sure there are a few games here and there that I miss but with NSO, Sega Ages, Capcom Beat em up bundle, X collection etc. and having an SNES classic I pretty much already have access to everything I want personally.

@Moroboshi876 Oh, agreed on that point. It's always glass half empty with these individuals, but to be fair,
I never debated that. I just put in my two cents concerning Dreamcast emulation in Sega AGES.

Of course, even if that does happen, the question will still be if it will also come to the Switch...

I don't doubt that. If I'm not mistaken, the other systems got Sega Mega Drive Classics (now Switch too, but a little late) and Switch owners had to "settle for" individual releases with the always applauded M2 treatment. Is there any system in these days receiving Sega Ages games apart from Switch?

@redd214 Exactly my point.

VC stings more in the Switch's case because it's also a portable. The 3DS was a taste of things to come with NES and SNES VC officially on a portable, and with the Switch being able to deliver on all sorts of emulation, it would have been cool to see N64 and beyond on there.

@ThanosReXXX BC is the only analog I had to VC for the Microsoft platform. Its not like MS has half the history of Nintendo or even Sony so they do what they can.

VC is that feature that some people act like its a system seller when it isn't. Is it nice? Yes, but so are collections, remasters and ports that people like to complain about too....they serve the same purpose. Bringing the back catalog to a current system. However most (many?... I think most is correct but I could be wrong....) people buy systems to play modern games...isn't that why the two genre trolls are complaining about no new games (while I'm scrambling to cancel preorders so I don't destroy my budget for the rest of the year...) and Nintedoomed? Also, while I realize not the same people necessarily but I find it it funny when the physical elite demand VC.

@Moroboshi876 GC VC would be interesting...with the Wii VC on the Wiiu I'm sure Nintendo has thought about it...but prices would be like 15-17 and then pitchforks will be brandished again.

It's like people think companies should revolve around them, I know some of it is social grouping/herd mentality but still... Maybe I should ask Apple to make me an exclusive Iphone... lol.

@Moroboshi876 I'm really looking forward to SNK Collection as well.

As for the Sega Ages line, going by that recent poll they ran and comments made after by M2, I have no doubts it's going to grow past the initial batch of 15. So far we know 11 of them.

They ran that poll for a reason. Now I don't expect all, or even half of that list to come to Switch but there'll be a good few that do. Virtua Racing was way down the list and we're getting that, which opens up the possibility of Virtua Fighter coming too, especially since it placed so high in the poll.

The most blatant hint that more is on the way though is these comments by M2.

"Sega joked that all the Jet Set Radio fans in the world must have voted, because it was by far the most popular pick. However, whether it is possible is still in the works. According to Naoki Horii from M2, while they have been doing their best to get Dreamcast games working, games from beyond that generation is task that they’ll need to work on from now on.

As for Shenmue I & II, there were a lot of requests to bring the games to Nintendo Switch as well. However, the recent rereleases were handled by Sega of Europe and not Japan, so when they meet with Sega of Europe next week, they will discuss the matter."

@OorWullie But was Shenmue I&II on other systems handled by M2? I don't see that particular pack coming if the answer is no. Separately who knows, but I doubt all these games will cost 6.99 as the ones they're releasing already.

I know about the poll, but they don't have to be games they are working in as of now. As you post, they state that Dreamcast is something they need to work on from now on. But haven't yet.

Was that poll a closed one or people just sent their suggestions? If it was closed I understand your optimism, guys. At the end of the day, they ran one about 3D Classics and the games that won became part of Final Stage. But if it was just a matter of sending suggestions the road is a lot longer.

@Moroboshi876 Shenmue 1 & 2 was handled by Sega of Europe. Going by the comments I posted above M2 are meeting with Sega of Europe in the coming days and will dicuss the matter. If M2 are allowed to work with it then I imagine it will be separate releases and I have no doubt they would cost more than $7.99. The pricing of Virtua Racing should give us an indication. I'll be surprised if that costs the same as the others. Virtua Racing was way beyond what the Megadrive could handle, despite it receiving a port. The 32X then Saturn couldn't even handle it.

As for Dreamcast games, it's not something they're possibly going to work on, as mentioned in my post above, they have already been doing their best to get them working. It's games from beyond the Dreamcast they said they need to work on.

The poll was run on Twitter and was aimed at Japan and specifically for the AGES line which as it stands is exclusive to Switch, just as the 3D Classics line was exclusive to 3DS. You were only allowed to nominate one game. They said when launching the poll they would reveal the results at the Tokyo Game Show along with some surprise Ages news, which turned out to be Virtua Racing. This was very much a Switch orientated poll.

@OorWullie Apparently one of the unannounced titles is on the list!

@GrailUK Oooh exciting! I wonder what it could be? Virtua Fighter is my guess, considering how high it polled and the fact they've been emulating VR from the ground up. Makes sense to do VF at the same time. Hopefully they'll make time for Virtua Cop while they're at it

With Columns 2 and Thunderforce AC having online multiplayer added,I think it makes it more likely Virtua Racing will too. Same goes for VF if it comes.

@OorWullie Of course, but if people could nominate they could have asked for anything. There are some Dreamcast games for instance in that list, and you say they haven't been able yet. Sorry I understood it the other way around before.

By the way, for me "beyond Dreamcast" means a system after Dreamcast, which doesn't exist, and if it did would be superior and thus more difficult to emulate. So... I really don't understand that part.

@Ryu_Niiyama Hey, no argument from me. But as for "most people" wanting (only) new games on new systems...
I'm quite tempted to either call these people idiots, or, when I'm in a bit of a nicer mood, short-sighted individuals. The more's the better, ALWAYS. There is no exception to that rule, and almost everyone I know, both in my own circles and on sites like these, wants to have it all, if possible, so either VC or backward compatibility is still very much coveted on any platform.

But having said that, I don't get the anger or the hate about it either. If one platform doesn't offer what I'm looking for, then I still have a couple of others, so I'm good either way.

@ThanosReXXX Half of me is a tad disappointed. Without the Virtual Console we have had so many re-releases (Wild Guns, Wonder Boy, Flashback) with loads more announced (Toki, Langrisser, Grandia, Ninja Warriors) mostly physical too! I'm loving the new lick of paint these games are getting and/or the museum-esq extra features. We are also getting more coin-op versions as opposed to the inferior NES versions.
So I am kind of worried that Gradius on NES online might deter someone like Hamster or Konami from releasing the coin-op version. I'm sad that it might mean Nintendo aren't going to re-release Metroid with an on the fly toggle button for 8-bit and contemporary art styles. That kind of thing. I am really hoping they decide to revisit the Mario All-Stars approach with their retro games in the same vein Dotemu did. Even if it doesn't put devs off releasing other versions, it might prohibit a physical release in some way.

@GrailUK Don't worry, there is going to be an arcade version of Excitebike this very week, Urban Champion and other games will be available both in NES Online and in Arcade Archives line, and we will see R-Type in two forms too.
