Switch OLED is the best handheld I’ve ever owned. Great piece of kit. Before this I had a PSVITA which pretty much was fine on day one.

Generally, waiting to get a system gets you better hardware, look at the PS4 Pro.

The PSVR is the best VR system on the market today.

@iLikeUrAttitude - My apologies, I was under the impression we were talking about general points with the switch, not your specific situation. That said, you also don’t seem to have understood my point either; I wasn’t stating reasons to overturn your points, but pointing out that they aren’t as universal or cut-and-dry as you state. Take the kickstand for example; you simply stated the switch has a bad kickstand, implying all versions had this problem, when, as I pointed out, that was not the case. Therefore, my suggestion was to add as asterisk, with further print adding something like “only in regular models”.
Mind you, I’m not sure how you missed this, considering I opened my response by stating it (“most should have an asterisk added” was literally my first line) but in any case, I hope you’ll understand what I was trying to say.

I don't know what you mean by that since almost none of my points were anecdotal.
Furthermore the vast majority of Switch owners own the base model and as such I'm going to criticize it. I understand some issues were fixed with the OLED but the points still stand for the original version.

Well obviously some issues were fixed with the OLED as you stated but as I mentioned before the vast majority of switch owners have the original model so I'm going it judge it first. Even a user that commented here specified that the OLED switch specifically was their favorite console.

Likewise with mine, but I see your point now.

Good... good

The Nintendo DS is my favorite platform in terms of software, and the 3DS family is my favorite in terms of hardware as it's able to play Nintendo DS games as well as its own generation of games. The Nintendo Switch is in the mix for second best with the Nintendo Wii. The Switch needs more original Nintendo games (and ports) for me to view it above the Wii, and, depending on what gets released, 2022 might do it. The Switch has too much ground to cover to reach the Nintendo DS for me, especially with a successor for the Switch being speculated. I will say though that the Switch is lightning striking thrice for Nintendo.

@I-U
One outlier is a fluke. Two outliers is a coincidence. But three outliers is a trend.

No other company have I observed that has released so many different types of devices, franchises and games that catch on like wildfire, over and over and over again. Be it Donkey Kong in the arcade, NES back in the early console days fighting against half a dozen other companies all trying to do the same thing, the GameBoy, the DS, the Wii, the Switch, or Wii Sports, or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, or Animal Crossing, or Pokémon Go (and Pokémon in general).

There's just something in their DNA that leads to hardware, IP and games that really resonates with ppl. And they can do it with incredible repeatability.

@Buizel
That's the heart of it, really. The versatility and convenience. Those opposed to Switch portray it as just being able to "play on a plane" and that's it. So they're not interested. But that's not it at all. I play the vast majority of my handheld time at home, in the recliner. It's not just about being able to take it with you (though that is a big part of it), it's the flexibility to be whatever you need it to be, wherever you need it, whenever you need it. Undocking and playing handheld while watching Netflix is huge, or just having a more intimate, personal experience in handheld mode. Or setting up in tabletop at work in the office, passing a joycon for a round of Street Fighter or Mario Kart, coming home and docking it for some TV play, enjoying games with gyro aiming, split joycon, joycon in grip, sideways joycon, pro controller, surround sound on TV and headphones in handheld for games with quality audio, and pressing a single button to wake or sleep at any time.

It's all about versatility and convenience. Like growing up with corded telephones and then suddenly being given a smartphone with a kickstand that can serve as your house phone, but also on the go, but also portably through the house... Experiencing that and then going back to the landline, even if the call quality is "HD Crystal Clear", is a hard sell.

@iLikeUrAttitude "I don't know what you mean by that since almost none of my points were anecdotal."
When I brought up my points, you responded with this:
"I shouldn't have to get a whole new system to mitigate these problems I have with my current one, also if I were to do that and do a system transfer I would lose my splatoon saves since and some other games that aren't supported by the cloud which is another issue."
This suggested to me your points were based purely off your personal experience, and weren't really general points on the Switch, but personal problems you yourself had.

'Well obviously some issues were fixed with the OLED"
Not just the OLED. Take another look at my post, I mentioned that both the cooling fan and battery life were improved by the revision model (if you aren't familiar with it, it's the 2019 model they quietly released as a replacement for the launch model). Bluetooth Support was also not an OLED addition, but was added in a system update.
Heck, the only thing that I mentioned that OLED specifically fixed was the kickstand. Everything else was addressed either with the Revision model (fan, battery life), or a later update (Bluetooth), so, to address your other point of only criticising the base model, even if you do so (which, if you're discussing the Switch in general, is a inherently incomplete angle anyway), if you're basing your points off the launch model, then your points would also be dated by virtue of being drawn from an outdated model (It'd be like if I criticised the Xbox 360 today for the RRoD problems the launch models had; If I was specifically criticising those launch models, then sure, it'd stand, but to criticise the entire line of consoles, as if those problems weren't fixed with later models, would be inaccurate, if not outright disingenuous).

About two years ago I saw the Switch the first time in the real world, the 10 year old son of a friend was playing with it in handheld. I was surprised how good Mario Kart 8 Deluxe looked, even if I learned later the game was an original release on the prior generation.
Long story short, I was sold.

After purchasing it almost exactly a year ago, I was back in the game after having played MMORPGs on the PC for more than fifteen years and playing almost exclusively Master System and Mega Drive games in 2020.
A whole world of wonders opened to me. I could play rather recent games I missed all those years while also getting into big Nintendo franchises like NES and SNES classics I just played randomly back in the days, because the Switch is the first Nintendo "home" console I own (apart the NES mini, which doesn't count in my eyes).
My brother, who's 12 years younger than me, has always been a Nintendo fan. I never understood his passion for this company until I got into the Switch. Back in the days I might have played a few games on his N64, Gamecube and Wii but the spark needed the Switch to jump over to me as well. I even got the Switch earlier than my bro, he was hesitant because of reports on the internet about Joycon drift and others.
In just one year the Switch has become my favourite console of all time, surpassing my cherished Mega Drive, even if I'd like to see folders in its UI to sort my few digital games from the physical entries and a proper playtime log (I'd rather have none at all like in the old times than the mess we have now).

Finally I agree with most people here, the biggest strength of the Switch is its hybrid nature. I play it mostly docked but it's neat I can take it out of the dock when my girlfriend wants to watch the telly or take it to places like last summer vacation.

Since January 2021 owner of my first real Nintendo "home" console.

SwitchForce

Here's my experiences so far as listed good and bad. But so far I have amass Domestic and Foreign games in the 300+ mark not all of them played but some are collectors and some standard that need to be played still. I'll add more as I progress through my collection of games.
Good.
1. Hybrid nature allowing me to go and play where ever and dock wherever as long as I bring the Dock with me if I go TV.
2. Cart nature for the love of Physical games and if I change or give away anyone can enjoy.
3. SD slot allowing 1tb or more
4. Wifi nature so not tethered to ethernet cable
5. Not stuck like other certain consoles where dependent on wall outlet for power source.
6. Ability to multi player or multi-console player games.
7. Volume of gaming library for all gender and age group aka Being Inclusive for all family
8. OLED nature
9. First Console I collected this much game vs 3DS family line of games.
10. Lite option
11. First Console I went head first into but knowing Nintendo I trusted they would not disappoint and they didn't.
Bad.
1. Lack of beefer GPU-More CPU please....
2. Lack of more Int. Storage
3. Lack of expand RAM usage
4. Too few sd slot-need at least 4 or not that at least
5. 4K/DLSS for Dock option
6. Price for OLED is nutpunch
7. Want TV option you need the DOCK or similar that won't kill your Switch.
8. Need Lite OLED option
9. Common give us 4K would ya.......

Beyond this I will commit to a Switch maybe another and fork my v2 to my nephew as it still play just as good as the day I exchanged with my v1 Switch. I like to get a OLED if possible but that's the plan for now unless a 4K model comes out. I was a passionate PC gamer not Steam I hate having to be tethered to just game. Also your stuck on the location you play no moving around unless you get a Gaming Laptop and that isn't a cheap endeavor if you want good 60fps 4K/DLSS gaming on the go. After the Switch(pun) experience I thought to myself where did miss all those years for when I could go and game anywhere that where the 3DS experience kick me in the butte and said hey you is that all you can do. So after my marriage with 3DS and to New 3DS XL of which I still own them but my two are with my niece and nephew even though their Dad was like ugh...again. I was like hey your not providing them a outlet to enjoy you know. They still like using the New 3DS XL they game maybe be on smaller screen but still just as fun since not all games are Switch or can be mustered on the Switch because of the hardware architecture makes it harder if not almost impossible to transfer over. But so far they have me more or less sold on the Switch design and architecture and that now this will be going forward.

I'm just going to repost what I said from an older similar topic "When did you buy your Switch?". It pretty much explains why it's my favorite all time platform. I also agree with everyone's bullet points on here why it is.

"Got it early September 2018. At that time it was mostly for MHGU since that came out late August of that year and I caved in. By that period I was pretty much "retired" from gaming regularly. I let my gaming PC age out, I skipped the previous generation(s) of consoles due to various reasons like life just getting in the way as I age. I mainly just had a New 3DS XL (for MH4U and some other games), my aged out PC (for some older games I was on and off with) and my Wii. I really was about to fully let life beat me and just stop gaming in general. I took a final gamble with the Switch and it was the best decision I've ever made. In a previous post I mentioned how the Switch completely reinvigorated my gaming life 500%. Due to all its capabilities since purchase I've had such a blast and rearranged my busy life to make sure there's always time for Switch. Whether docked(mostly) or handheld. Very important to make time to just have some fun for yourself."

This fire is burning and it's out of control. It's not a problem you can stop it's Rock and Roll!!!

Couldn't have said it better. People forgot what fun meant these days. With FPS games they forgot sometimes it just fun that makes life more fun.

It's not, though.

But instead of bringing negativity where it does not belong, I will say that the Switch has one big thing going for it, and that's the handheld play. It is by far the most comfortable handheld I have ever played. My gaming style has shifted away from the couch/TV and so the Switch is perfect for me in that sense.

I will say I use my Genki adapter to play on my laptop and that's also a godsend in gaming for Switch when you need to charge after 6+ hours playing and can't stop.

Months late, but I think Switch is a piece of *****.

1. The stupid Switch Online service. Remember when Nintendo would let you play online for free? The good ol' days...

2. How Nintendo handles releasing their classics is just sad. They either gave us shovelware games or buggy versions of games like the N64 ones. Whenever they did release classics that you can buy and own they do the bare minimum and slap a $60 price tag. Cashgrabby ports. All they did to Mario 64 in the 3D All-Stars collection is smoothed textures and called it a "day" while fans has done widescreen and 60 FPS for free.

3. The aging hardware. Nintendo need to seriously make new hardware because the Switch hardware even holds back their own games like the new Pokémon, Age of Calamity and a few others not being able to reach 1080p. Just make a brand new stronger Switch that let's all games be 60 FPS and 4K already! 900p and 30 FPS is unacceptable in 2022 and soon 2023.

4. A chunk of Switch ports are pure cashgrabs. Remember ARK when it release on Switch. That's an unplayable mess. Most of those Switch ports makes the game go crazy with frame rates, makes the graphics look like PS2 games and some aren't even ports. REmakes 2 and 3, VII and Village, the Kingdom Hearts games minus MoM, Guardians of the Galaxy and Control are all streaming and yes, they are full-priced. Even if Nintendo did make a stronger and better Switch it won't save it from bad ports.

5. Steam Deck outshined the Switch. It's wiser to buy a Steam Deck to have better graphics and performance than the aging Switch.

and

6. Some of Nintendo's games are rushed. Examples: Mario Golf Super Rush(ed), Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Strikers Battle League, Nintendo Switch Sports and a few others sadly needed free updates.

In case you ask "Why is free updates bad?" I'll tell you. The games are released with lacking in content and makes it feel like you bought those games in beta phase full-priced. Nintendo needs to delay some of their games and make them complete. Sadly, game companies rushed their games and has gotten worst over time. Still got PTSD when Daisy must be added after Battle League released. Ya know? A staple character of Mario Sports games even since Tennis!

and lastly....

7. How companies handle releasing their games on physical. I wouldn't mind buying the first two Mega Man collections, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy X and X-II, Borderlands, Bioshock and a few others some more money if they actually put the whole game on the cartridge or put them on multiple cartridges. So much for physical media if you have a download code or have to go online to unlock the game you have payed for...

Honeslty, even with people complaining about the output of games from Nintendo being "slow", I just don't get how. I barely have time to play the games Nintendo releases on this thing. Maybe the only year that wasn't the case was 2018 for me (and, to be fair, after 2017 it probably was hard to keep it going). And that's without counting all of the support it gets from other devs. Even 5 years on it's life cycle I still have a REALLY long wish list of games for the Switch.

My only BIG negatives is that Nintendo decided to make online a paid subscription service because the other two companies got away with it (ugh) and Pokemon. The only *mainline Pokemon game I truly liked on the Switch 5 years in is Arceus. Which is a shame because it is a franchise that I loved up until the Switch.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Can't argue with that. And don't forget Torna released on it too. It's almost like a small RPG adventure on it's own.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Oh, true. I forgot when they included a cut area that was datamined in the original in a prologue story on the Xenoblade 1 remake. A story that was also surprisignly lengthy.

Man, the output of Monolith Soft this gen is just perfect. Hoping the DLC story of Xenoblade 3 is as good as Torna was and that they do a physical edition as well. Just bought the physical edition of Torna (despite having it as digital DLC).

1. Hybrid that can DOCK and go Portable and play on any other Switch Docks.
2. Play games no one thought possible aka Witcher 3, Skyrim, NMS
3. Just don't drop it.....!!!! Seriously...
4. Those Shinies got away.......!
5. It just tells anyone your Hi-Tech all the way....
6. Is it Tablet or SmartPhone...????
7. Well it innovate/iterate on past designs in a AIO unit that's not seen tried and complete
8. Just look at the Steam Deck everyone was Dissing the Switch now someone makes a copy design and people talk how good it is? REALLY>?>?????
9. Number #8 should tell any why Nintendo Switch is having the success it's having since release but NintenDoomed fandom would tell you it would die in 2017.
10. Last and least it has a Battery that can play on-go gaming try that with PS5/Xbox?? Anyone...??
11. Hi-Value theft...NOT GOOD-what would you expect......somethings are too good for itself
12. Those talking how good Deck is try finding or support for it-let alone the Price. Not going to happen-so quit your whining we know you Hatin' on Switches already that's a given by your own posting.
13. OLED just increases the Odds for more sales and promote Switch - price on dampens but Sales are going strong still.
14. It's Nintendo what else would they DO!!!!!!
15. Physical or Digital games-unless only digital.

The Switch has become my all-time favorite platform because it is the best realization of taking your console games on the go. Nintendo didn't invent the concept, the Sega Nomad and the Turbo Express were the first mainstream devices for playing your console games portably. However, the Switch is an example of how technology moved the idea forward. I have no doubt Switch sales will eventually pass the PS2 and DS, becoming the best selling console of all time and the first Nintendo platform to pass 1B pieces of software sold.

I look forward to the Switch successor in 2026.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,555 games (as of March 31st, 2026)

Slightly off-topic:
I'm currently in limbo if in the future I should go with the Switch's successor or pick up the Steam Deck.
Most depends on how the next Nintendo console turns out to be.

The pros of a Nintendo console:

  • The games published on it are usually optimised for the hardware.
  • No excessive need to tinker with settings.
  • Its price which is usually cheaper than the one of its competitors.

The pros of the Steam Deck:

  • Multiplat games are usually cheaper on it.
  • Less worries with backwards and forwards compatibility since it runs PC games.
  • A way larger library.

Since January 2021 owner of my first real Nintendo "home" console.
