Well, picked up Darksiders 3, popped in the game and to my surprise, not even notification to update anything.

Honestly, the debate about carts with all updates on them is sort of pointless. The thing is, these days, games get updates all the time. Everytime I turn a console on, a game has an update. In my opinion, it’s not worth fussing over whether or not a game has all the updates on the cart or not. More than likely, there will always be updates past the release of the cartridge. Updates will just always be a thing that can’t be controlled / changed.

I can’t imagine Dying Light will run well at all on Switch. I too had a blast with it on PS4.

@Miadaskate - There is a difference between an update and a mandatory one. Especially when it comes to carts and other physical media.

Mandatory ones basically say you've wasted time, resources and money on something that will be ultimately useless the day the Switch is no longer supported.

I see TY the Tasmanian Tiger is coming out physically in NA and then there is a different version where you get TY the Tasmanian Tiger on the card and TY the Tasmanian Tiger 2 as a download. Any region where TY the Tasmanian Tiger 2 is physical on the card?

Not really. Updates are updates. It’s
Inevitable.

I rarely order from Play-asia these days but I may be placing an order soon for these items.
Record of Lodoss War: Deidlet in Wonder Labyrinth - https://www.play-asia.com/record-of-lodoss-war-deedlit-in-won...
COGEN: Sword of Rewind - https://www.play-asia.com/cogen-sword-of-rewind-english/13/70...
DEEEER Simulator: Your Average Everyday Deer Game - https://www.play-asia.com/deeeer-simulator-your-average-every...
Fight of Animals: Arena - https://www.play-asia.com/fight-of-animals-arena-english/13/7...
Deathsmiles I & II (English) - https://www.play-asia.com/deathsmiles-i-ii-english/13/70eexj
Monster Crown (EU Region) - https://www.play-asia.com/monster-crown/13/70esld

For some reason, Play-asia is still the only place I can even find a listing for the EU release of Monster Crown, even though that game is coming out in three weeks. What is going on with that release?

COGEN Sword of Rewind looks great, but I have my concerns with how much paid DLC that game has, and how none of it is in the physical release. It has Copen from The Luminous Avenger iX (Azure Striker Gunvolt series) as a crossover DLC character too.
There's a pricier limited edition that includes some (but not all) DLC, an art book, and two audio CDs, but I'm not sure.

I also have my eyes on Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2, but I'm suspecting that LRG will have a US distribution release in the near future.

@Miadaskate - I am pretty sure a chunk of game is different than a full game.

No one orders pizza, gets all bu 3 slices and say, "pizza is pizza."

@Zuljaras - Yes, all is playable on cart outside any bug fix patches that may be coming.

The main concern here really is if the physical release is base content complete.
There are some releases that don't include all of the necessary game data to actually launch the game without an internet connection, such as the Spyro Remastered trilogy.

It's one thing if the game receives content updates in the form of expansions or DLC in the future, but it's another if the base game isn't on the cartridge.

@Miadaskate - Then simply don't belittle the preference of having a functional cart for the sake of being confrontational. Literally you're interjection was to demean the preference. So just stop.

It's preferential for collectors to get something as close to the most current version as possible for future investment of their time. Partial game is just simply wasted investment, as they are rendered obsolete post-support.

That's literally why collector types care so much.

I don't think that's fair, I share Paraka's concern.

Not all updates are the same, whilst it's preferable that a cartridge has everything on the cartridge, there's four kinds:
1. Minor function fixes or hotfixes, which do not modify content.
2. Day-1 patches, used to get the game up to a more acceptable standard at launch, which is done to account for the manufacturing time and when the game hits retail shelves.
3. Content updates, newly developed content that was not available at launch, which conceptually does not apply to digital-only games that get limited physical releases much later on.
4. Mandatory downloads, forcing the user to download additional data to complete the incomplete data on the cartridge.

Most retail games fall into categories 1, 2, or 3, but some publishers like Activision in particular are keen to use category 4, to ship an incomplete product that requires internet activation to offload production costs by using cheaper cartridges with lower storage capacity.

Magician

@RupeeClock Possibly consider another category for that list?

1. QoL update: Japanese releases like Cube Creator X and Fishing Spirits had English support added a while after the game had launched. I wouldn't qualify that as neither a minor hotfix (nothing was fixed) nor a content update (no gameplay was added or altered).

Switch Physical Collection - 1,251 games (as of April 24th, 2024)

@Magician
I would sort of qualify a QoL change as a functional update, rather than a fix.
It's kind of like content, and it doesn't necessarily fix something that was broken, but does improve the user experience.
So, I'd revise the 2nd category instead.

Hoping to snag Metroid Dread Collector’s Edition at launch. Never could land a pre-order. Wonder how difficult it’ll be. I’m thinking very.

I’ve been hearing the game is super intense. I can’t wait.

It's been a much easier time pre-ordering that collector's edition in the UK.
GAME still lets you pre-order it right now.
https://www.game.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product2_101...
And My Nintendo UK Store periodically accepts orders.

I was recently experiencing a lot of issues placing orders on Nintendo's UK site, for some reason they will always refuse my payment card details unless I place the order on a mobile device, I can't make sense of that. I eventually managed though because I did want the extra things which are an A2 poster set, sticker sheet, and keychain.

Also, my physical copy of Sonic Colours: Ultimate arrived today.
It has Ver 1.0.0 on the cartridge, so the delay wasn't to get a newer ROM on the cartridge.
So if you want to experience the horrible flashing colours glitch for yourself, this is one way to go about it.
Remarkably, the Switch firmware knows an update is available even though I only inserted the cartridge after going into airplane mode. Nintendo must really want to make sure you update this software based on an ID list in the firmware or something.

You can also get a copy from Smyths, which is slightly cheaper as they don't charge delivery, but Game do, even for instore pickup.

Since I'm sure that updates can be downloaded through unofficial means wouldn't that make the V1.0 versions more valuable?

With V1.0 you can select which update you wanna add. But with a later update burnt onto the cart you can never revert back to the older versions.
In some cases you'd lose original content entirely.

@SKTTR
Updates aren't actually written to the game cartridge, thankfully.
The Switch firmware itself keeps a record of the latest version of a game to be launched on that system.
Meaning if I were to ever launch say v1.0.4 of Sonic Colours Ultimate, I wouldn't be able to launch any earlier versions like a cartridge with v1.0.0 installed, or any other physical releases that might have earlier versions.

Nintendo do this for two reasons, save data compatibility, and exploit mitigation.
