Smash 4 was REALLY lacking in terms of extra modes. Smash Run was awesome, but it didn't see it's full potential due to the fact that it was local multiplayer only on a handheld (basically the most useless type of multiplayer in this day and age).

I've heard nothing but criticism for Smash Tour, and the Orders mode doesn't really change up the gameplay as much as changing what you are working towards. Trophy Rush sucks and Target Blast sucks.

I know none of these minigames are the heart of the game, but these are kinds of things that change the gameplay up enough to keep me playing longer. When I got tired of the standard Smash formula in Brawl, I would go to Coin Launcher, SSE, or Stage creator.

So for Smash 5, all I want is for them to fix that. Give us back old Break the Targets. Give us some sort of adventure mode. And give us a better trophy earning minigame.

I don't think this is a stupid or silly rumor at all. If ya'll are referring to the rumor posted at Nintendo Life today, its source is Dr. Serkan Toto. Toto is the CEO of Kantan Games, which is a consultancy firm for Japanese gaming companies. Assuming that Nintendo learned its lesson from Wii U's launch (which would be the most unbelievable part of the rumor), it would make good sense to have Smash from day one; it'll have been two years since Smash Wii U/3DS launched, and Nintendo has maintained a strong relationship with Namco. Given the source, I see little reason to scoff at it.

Moving on to pure speculation (and personal hope), though, let me spitball here.

So lots of NX rumors point toward it breaking down the traditional console format and cycle — a unified OS across varied devices that share a library, and your devices can be upgraded every few years without losing your library (a la iOS or Android devices). If this is true, I feel as though it would make a lot of sense for Nintendo to change the way its perennial multiplayer staples (Smash, Mario Kart, and presumably Splatoon) work. Rather than one of these games per console, I could absolutely see Smash and the others taking a more "games as service" approach.

Imagine there is no "Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo NX," no "Mario Kart 9." Just Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart, which take the fantastic, content-packed foundations laid by Smash Wii U/3DS and Kart 8 and add a steady stream of free and paid content to them — new stages, new characters, new skins, new music tracks, trophies, game modes, and so forth — for years to come.

Personally, I would love this. Especially in the case of Smash Wii U, I'd hate to see those tremendous foundations ripped up and started anew — I'm still floored by the amount of content on offer, and the roster is absolutely stellar. I'd much rather see a visually updated Smash U that starts with all of its current content plus some new additions (Inklings, obviously), and then goes on to serve as the foundation of a games-as-service Smash Bros. I feel it'd be more profitable for Nintendo, and much more fruitful for players.

@VelvetElvis: I would rather NOT see this, actually. If Nintendo simply updated their games for years to come, nothing would evolve. The subtle differences between titles (for example yhings like how drifting works in Mario Kart and the speed of Smash games) would either not change, or be forever lost with every update.

I feel like I'm not articulating my point properly. Tell me if you're confused by anything.

Um, making a bunch of new content for free? Are you crazy or nuts?

@TeeJay, nope you're articulating just fine, no worries there — just a difference in opinion, and a totally valid one.

I do appreciate the differences among games (I still like to play Melee or Double Dash when I get the chance, just to feel the differing speed or unique gameplay mechanics you mentioned), and it's something that would be missed. I do think, though, that mechanics, modes, etc. could evolve over time. I'd never want to see a format like this for Zelda, per say, but I like the idea of a Smash or Kart on the games-as-service model because, in theory, you'd get that evolution consistently — what's to stop Nintendo from adding a new Melee-style movesets or a Double Dash mode in Kart? I'd also love to see previous games made available on a more comprehensive Virtual Console service to help scratch the variety itch. I mention that alongside the games-as-service model because my feeling is that the big innovation of the NX won't be an all-new way to control or play games, but a very forward-thinking distribution model, and that could potentially affect traditionally one-per-console games like Smash more than if affects others.

Anyway, this is all just crazy theorizing on my part. Your opinion is just as valid as mine, and it illustrates one thing clearly: if Smash and other games take on a games-as-service model on the NX, it could certainly be a divisive move on Nintendo's party.

EDIT: @TingLz, I said "and paid"! We've definitely gotten a mix of free and paid this generation, from Kart to Splatoon (to stay on topic for Smash, even some of that content was free). I'd gladly pay for new Smash content in small increments over the course of the year — hell, people drop $60 per year on all kinds of annualized titles. I'd personally rather pay to build on ever-growing content, especially for competitive games like Smash, Kart and Splatoon.

Let the entire Hyrule Warriors roster be in Smash! (yes, even Young Link as a returning veteran from Melee)

i can hardly believe that a Smash Bros NX is in the works that quickly, as other point out it could be a remake of wii u/3ds version
if so:

  • have smash run and tour in the NX version
  • players who already paid DLC could get them free, i would be please with this as i don't want to pay DLC for the third time on a different console, why brother getting this on the NX and have to Pay EVERYTHING again in that version. would be cool if you're account had dlc already you can get them for free for the NX version

I wouldn't necessary say it's not in development since usually when one game is finished in a series developers are already coming up with ideas for the next one. Even if it's just notes and what not.

My thoughts listed starting with the things I'm most confident about to the ones I'm least confident about:

  • They're working on another Smash Bros (pretty much confirmed if you ask me)
  • The NX is a portable system that replaces the 3DS
  • The NX launches this year
  • This version of Smash for NX will be a "port" of Smash for 3DS/Wii U
  • It'll be ready for the launch of the NX
  • It'll come with all of the DLC (Nintendo have been pretty good about DLC thus far)
  • There'll be some sort of discount for people who have already brought it digitally on Wii U or 3DS

Not to get off on a tangent, but you know what 3rd party character would blow people's minds if added to NX port...

Scorpion from MK.

If you had scorpion in the game with Ryu, that would be crazy. I wonder if Warner would allow it if that got an amiibo. Also to really shine people on, you could allow Scorpion to "Finish him" with some form of snes "ok for everyone" finisher.

Bro, this game would get me to buy an NX if it was a Smash game with Scorpion.

Smash Melee HD would be interesting to me from the points that:
1) if NX was a handheld, you could make Melee HD look great Uprezzed at 720p.
2) People would not feel burned if they bought the Wii U or 3ds version of Smash.
3) If Nintendo is going after the hardcore Nintendo diehards, Melee is one of those games they cherish and is hardcore!
4) it is also a esports game. Which helps the cause.

I would wonder just how much of a remake it is. Would they fix some of the flaws within Melee, or would it be the same exact game? Would they include Online Play or A) it being a launch title the Online services may not be ready, B) they want to keep it as close as possible to the original.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I think "Smash NX" will be a near identical port of the Wii U version. I think if you have the Wii U version, you're probably not going to buy this one. Repackaging it as an NX title strengthens the launch lineup and is aimed at people who didn't own a Wii U. If you were buying a console and you never owned the previous one, it would be much more enticing to see a game you have wanted for the new system instead. It masks the scent of picking up a 'last-gen' game. If it's not for the Wii U owners, there's no reason to include the DLC. Why give a bunch of new customers who have never owned the game all the DLC for free? A DLC shop will open up on the NX and Nintendo will get a lot of new people buying this "Day 1" DLC. The NX version will be exactly the same except it looks a little bit crisper, has achievements (or whatever the NX will be doing), and will support the NX controller. Maybe if we're lucky we will get a few new trophies.

It would be great if I was wrong, new content would be awesome, but my expectations for this are low. It's just easier to repackage Smash as an NX title than to advertise "Hey guys, don't forget the Smash we made for our last console works on this one too!"

@DekuOnion: I'm sure the NX will be backwards compatible. So if that is the case, they're going to need to do something to make the NX version the "definitive" version. For this reason alone I can see them wanting to make Smash NX the "ultimate" version and include all DLC.

Not to mention the obvious reasoning that including all DLC to make it the definitve version will help move more consoles.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

@TeeJay: The right move may very well be to include the DLC. Beyond that, I don't think there will be anything drastic. But now that I think about it, I think enough time will have passed between the DLC's initial release that including it is a good idea.

If they do release all the DLC with it, it is tempting to sell off my copy of Smash Wii U now and pick up Smash NX at launch. I never bought any of the DLC (and certainly won't now) so it would be worthwhile.
