First, the TMNT Cowabunga Collection. Now a pair of my favorite rpgs are coming to current consoles. Konami have been making some consumer-friendly choices recently. Feels weird.
Confirmed to be a current-gen port of the PSP version which was originally a Japan-only release.
Upon seeing the Suikoden news this morning, I thought the same thing. First Cowabunga collection, then talk of Metal Gear Solid re-releases (was that confirmed?), and now this. I like this trend, Konami!

Suikoden is probably the number one game/series I have wanted to play and never have, so I am very excited for this. Now to keep them coming. Xenogears/saga next?
Day one purchase for me. Suikoden was my favorite RPG on the PS One, that and Legend of Dragoon. Been wanting to play Suikoden again for awhile but I though I would have to settle for Eyiuden Chonicle instead.
Kinda odd though Konami, first another company makes a game that's pretty much a spiritual successor to the TMNT games and then you announce the Cowabunga Collection. Then someone brings out a spiritual successor to Suikoden and all of a sudden your are remastering them. Coincidence???

Yey, the PlayStation 5 version arrived today. Really looking forward to these classics. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake made me fall in love with JRPGs again.
@XandertheWise The current release is actually a port of the PSP Collection. So unless they added something new to it, which I dont believe the did, or you just want Suikoden on your Switch or just love Suikoden you can probably just skip it. The only reason I would get it on Switch is cause its portable but since you got it on PSP there is no reason for that.

@Tasuki
with them mentioning ps3 alongside psp it makes me think they may be talking about the "Psone classics" release (for those unfamiliar think virtual console but for psone games) from what i gather the differences between those and the switch versions aside from diagonal movement and widescreen are the remastered visuals, difficulty levels, some QOL stuff such as message logs and the ability to speed up combat, and i think a bunch of bug-fixes including the US specific bugs and the exploit which let you visit a later location earlier.
my only concern with the switch version is performance since from what i gather the trade-off for the fancier visuals was the game running at a lower framerate and going by the review some performance dips in suikoden 2 in areas where theres a lot of fire, though for me im hoping it at least stays stable outside of those.
I've played an hour and a half so far. I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I don't like the change in the characters, from sprites to pixel art. Some fidelity feels lost and animations up and down stairs is jerky. But on the other hand, I appreciate the ability to move diagonally.
On one hand, I don't like how backgrounds look as they appear...cheap? On the other hand, I think the character portraits for dialogue boxes have been improved. Combat feels the same, but with a QoL improvement of auto combat continually cycling until either you manually stop it or the enemies are all dead. I appreciate that I don't have to select "Auto" again every turn.
Inventory system is the same. Music is the same. And, like the original release, getting into combat has no load screen (or at least it's front-loaded to mask the loading). Which is a bad aspect of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, all the load screens.
I don't know. It's largely the same game, but different.
So how does this game run on Switch compared to the Series X. I am thinking of picking it up but not sure if I want it on Switch to be able to play it in bed or the Series X for the achievements.

Three generals defeated. I was hoping that Teo would survive and join us. I enjoyed the scenery with the setting sun. Gremio's death was also sad. Currently I am hunting monsters, so I can buy the weapon upgrades up to level 15.
I like the frog/duck sound in the menu. Repeating the sound reminds me of a boss in Starwing/ Starfox for the Super Nintendo.
I’m currently playing the games on the Switch and they run like a dream for me. I haven’t noticed any frame rate dips or anything. I don’t know if it’s the same for PS5/Series X, but when you start an enemy encounter the game takes about one second to transition to the battle screen. That may. Be the same on other consoles or just a game issue.
I completed the game last night. It was fantastic from start to finish, and it was my first time playing the game. It was expertly paced, had fantastic characters and story arcs that actually made me emotional. The game, even from a gameplay standpoint, was cinematic in a way that would draw you into its world. By the time I finished it, my main party was level 59-60, and I beat the final boss with relative ease. There were two boss fights, whilst I did beat first try, gave me a run for my money - primarily due to how they were introduced at the most in-opportune time.
I started the second one this morning and I can’t believe how much the game already feels better than its predecessor. That says a lot because I’ve already put the first game in my top 10 JRPGs of all time. Suikoden 2 comes out swinging with an incredible opening. And there is more things on screen taking place and everything seems more refined. I have a feeling it’s going to be quite the journey.
I've read that worst instances of slowdown are in Suikoden 2 during times with a lot of fire effects on screen. Not sure if any post-patches have smoothed that over or not.
Beyond that, I'll have to read some old S2 walkthrough to see if it's possible to bring the hero from S1 into your S2 game like you could with the original releases.
