This discussion started to come up in the 3D All Stars Thread and I think it's worth its own topic, so here we are.

Yoshi has been playable in several 3D Mario games, most notably Sunshine, 64 DS, and Galaxy 2, but within his own series (i.e. games like Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, Yoshi's Woolly World/Crafted World, etc.), he's never gone full 3D. Would you like to see a 3D Yoshi game? What would it be like?

Absolutely, and make it a 3D collect-a-thon like Donkey Kong 64 or Banjo-Kazooie. Worlds to explore, bosses, collectables, and moves to learn all in one big adventure.

Surprised it hasn't been done yet.

I like the psuedo 3d good feel games myself. I feel like if Nintendo did a 3D game I would spend most of my time going “why isn’t this a mario game?” But i feel like current Yoshi is different enough to not feel like a skin of an existing platformer. Sorta like how DM is its own thing.

Its about time Yoshi got his own 3d game The fact that Donkey kong got one and not Yoshi? ba I think Yoshi should of had a 3d collect athon along time ago.

Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!

@ToadBrigade So why have a Yoshi series at all by that logic? 2D Yoshi gameplay could also be done in 2D Mario if they really want to, but they chose to make it a separate series.

As for my thoughts, I'd definitely like to see one at some point. Yoshi is a naturally exploration focused platformer so it'd be perfect for a sandbox style game and Good Feel seems to be trending in that direction with Crafted World creeping more 2.5D. I think making the jump to a full fledged sandbox where you collect Smiley Flowers to progress would be a natural evolution of the series. Additionally, I think they would also need to add some QoL mechanics to help with aiming eggs, such as a lock-on feature and/or a reticule that shows the direction your egg will travel. It might feel too easy, but it would be very much needed to help deal with the greater range of angles 3D would allow.

I've been waiting for a 3D Yoshi game for years. Each time he's playable in a 3D Mario platforming game I just find him incredibly fun to use and think if he were to play like that in his own 3D adventure, that would be a great start. His latest playable portrayal is especially amazing and I love how they implemented him there.

Could implement a way that different Yoshi colors allow for different abilities similar to Super Mario World. Throw in some cute costumes for the Yoshi to wear too (and no I'm not talking about Crafted World's shoddy attempt at them which were just cardboard boxes that Yoshi awkwardly carried with him, I never used that).

Carry over various Yoshi related power-ups too. Such as the Yoshi's Island watermelons and the Super Mario Galaxy 2 berries and peppers.

Maybe even add a little 'Chao Garden' like area where you can hatch and look after baby Yoshis. Maybe these baby Yoshis can even grow up to become playable themselves.

Oh man, the possibilities....

Definitely.

Adding to all of this, implement some form of difficulty this time, please? Yoshi's Crafted World felt way too easy as both a Nintendo platformer and Yoshi game for me (and this is all without Mellow Mode and the Costumes in effect), plus I'd like for the Smiley Flowers to be well implemented into a collectible progression as opposed to being slapped on at the last minute.

Yes there should be a 3D Yoshi game. Yes it should be a sequel to Yoshi's Safari. Yes it should be designed by the team at id software who made the new Doom and Wolfenstein games. Yes the graphics should be "realistic" and take influence from the 90's Mario Bros. movie.

One other thing I do want to see gameplay wise is for them to experiment with different types of eggs. They've toyed around with this in past Yoshi games with mechanics such as the giant eggs and Huffin Puffins, but they could go a lot further with it. They could have eggs that bounce on the ground, eggs that you could use as platforms, and so on. Now I'm not sure if the 3D games are the best place to experiment with this because 3D makes it harder to aim eggs, but if they can make it work in 3D, I'd eventually like to see it.

@Bolt_Strike There could be an aiming system for egg throwing. Do it kinda like how Mario starts to aim FLUDD, but instead of firing FLUDD, Yoshi goes into aiming mode, and releasing the button (or pressing it again, depending on your setting, akin to Yoshi's Island 'Patient' or 'Hasty' gameplay styles) throws the egg. There could be an 'auto-aim' system too that you can turn on or off, for those who aren't as good at aiming.

It really shouldn't be that difficult to do. In Super Mario 64 DS, the eggs Yoshi could make would simply home in on enemies when thrown.

I feel like in general Nintendo are a bit over reliant on 2D platformers between the New Super Mario bros, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Yoshi, Wario. Aside from Mario all those franchises either had a 3D installment years ago and the concept was never fully explored (Donkey Kong 64, Wario World ) or never jumped (Yoshi and Kirby )

@Duboiss The problem is that Nintendo was incredibly productive in an era when 2d platformers were king. So they have plenty of "legacy" 2d platformer series. New entries in these sell (generally) well but it's not the genre that really sells consoles in the modern era.

I think 3d platformers have their own issues - Nintendo knows that (outside a brief flush of enthusiasm in the late 90's/early 2000's after Mario 64 basically invented the genre) they are just as much of a niche proposition as 2d platformers. They might capture more attention than 2d platformers... but they're also more expensive to make. Putting Mario in one means it'll sell but otherwise it's a harder sell.

I do think that a 3d Donkey Kong game could work as a game and commercially and still be very distinct from the 3d Mario games. It's such a big property, it's associated with great graphics and (bizarrely) some people go beyond tolerance of DK64 and actually really like it. Personally I'd like to see a DK game that takes the incredible naturalistic style of DKC:R and DKC:TF and produces a similar "rollercoaster" linear level design feel. Then again a pure 2d TF sequel would probably play better so what's the point?

I also think that there's room for a 3d Kirby platformer - looking like Mario 3d World with a pulled out fixed course perspective. It seems like a natural route for that franchise - it's never been a very precise platform series anyway, the slower pace and the floating to correct jumping mean that it should adapt very easily into 3d. I suppose the problem has always been that maybe HAL don't want to put the resources/risk into making it happen.

Of course there should be one. But not counting on they ever releasing one.

It’s gonna sound crazy but just think about it.

First-Person Yoshi

With his flutter jump you could have precise jumps and easily aim eggs.

Wow, weird thread, let me give my two cents.

I think it depends on how it is implemented. Donkey Kong country seemed like the perfect thing for 3D, but all that came of it was an, admittably good game IMO, but a bloated collect-a-thon nontheless. What I do think will not work is as a sandbox like game, It shouldn't be like Mario Odyssey, 64 or Sunshine. But what would work magnificently would be something to the tune of Galaxy, 3D world and land. Mostly Galaxy 2 I would think, especially because Yoshi is already in that game.

The level design needs to complement yoshi, I'm thinking because of Yoshi's, erm, flutteriness, the levels should be more vertical in nature than the average 3D mario, or 3D platformer in general I guess. But there should be plenty safety nets in place so you don't constantly fall down to the start whenever you fall, and to give you a chance to get Baby Mario back(I'm going to assume Baby Mario will be in this hypothetical game) in strenuous situations. Instead of getting close and personal to jump and stomp on enemy's and all that like normal Mario, the game should encourage you to use your eggs or consume ability to take out enemies and solve puzzles from afar. I believe 3D yoshi could work, but it needs to feel distinctly Yoshi, like Yoshi's island was to Mario World.

@Duboiss that would piss people off if they made and released it before Metroid Prime 4.

In hindsight, Nintendo totally should've made an exploration focused 3D Yoshi's Island when all the Mario games were linear in the early 2010s. Maybe on 3DS instead of pretending New Island needed to exist.

I still want them to do it, to see how a proper Yoshi game goes to 3D. It's been a very long time since we've seen a 2D series make their 3D debut, it'd be interesting to see at least.

Maybe the 3D Yoshi game could use the yoshi engine from Odyssey, but add egg throwing.
