I've always wanted to play this! The Switch version looks sharp but there's one problem: Horses, I'm just not into video game horses. See me walking all over Zelda games. I have no problem with our real life Long-headed hoofters but the video versions I find a bit clumsy.

I love the ability to summon my horse in BotW. But TotK didn’t have the horse armor needed to summon your horse. Kind of killed me wanting to ride a horse.
I'm blown away by this game, and this port specifically.
Red Dead Redemption has got to be one of if not the best looking handheld games I've ever seen. It's absolutely stunning on the Switch OLED. It looks so good, I can just set the controller down in tabletop mode and admire the graphics. That rarely happens for me with Switch games in portable mode. I mean, there's some really nice looking games on Switch (just recently Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4 come to mind) but neither of those inspired the sense of awe I get from Red Dead. It almost feels like the game was designed ground up for Switch (which makes sense as it was designed for 360/PS3 which are comparable to Switch in terms of power- I've always maintained the most impressive Switch games are 7th gen AAA ports).
I played about 10 hours of Red Dead Redemption 2, and I just couldn't get into it because the controls were needlessly complex. 5 different buttons and sequences of tapping and holding just to ride your horse at various speeds, for example. And that sort of thing permeated the entire game. They took realism too far. Even trying to pick something up off the ground was a chore because of the natural momentum of coming to a stop when walking. It was a spectacular game held back by devs focusing too much on realism and not enough on how it negatively affected the gameplay experience.
One of the first things I noticed with Red Dead Redemption on Switch, though, is that it doesn't feel excessive like the sequel. I can hold B on a horse to keep speed, or tap B to trot. Thats it. I can generally come to a stop where I want to when walking. I don't feel overly confused by the controls. It's definitely got depth and there's entertainment value in that richness of complexity, but it doesn't feel overdone. If RDR2 had played more like this, I'd probably have kept playing and it may have ended up on my all time faves list. Cause the core of the game itself was spectacular.
I feel like this is such an amazing game, and moreso, such an amazing game for Switch. It's a Red Dead game I can actually get into and enjoy thoroughly unlike the sequel, and better yet, it's on the best platform a game can be on- Switch. So not only is the game great, I can enjoy it on the TV or at work in handheld or in tabletop.
Now I see where all the hype for RDR2 came from. When that game released, it looked good no doubt. But I had no frame of reference beyond the trailers shown, since I had never played previous entries. But now I get it. And it's a bittersweet pill. Because on the one hand, this game is phenomenal, but on the other hand it makes the shortcomings of RDR2 all the more evident.
I dare say this might be the best 3rd party port on the Nintendo Switch, both in terms of the game itself and visuals/performance. The one thing that holds this game back from "absolutely legendary" status is lack of gyro. Thankfully it's not an FPS or TPS so shooting isn't something that dominates the gameplay, and as such lack of gyro can be overlooked, even if it's omission is unfortunate. The game does have aim assist as an option so the shooting gameplay is still totally viable (it would just be more fun with gyro).
With Batman Arkham Trilogy just 2 months away, I feel like 2023 might be the most impressive year yet for Switch releases. Not only in terms of 1st party (Fire Emblem Engage, Advance Wars 1+2, Metroid Prime Remastered, Zelda TotK, Pikmin 1, 2 and 4, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Bros Wonder, WarioWare, Detective Pikachu, etc) but also for 3rd party (Octopath Traveler II, Persona 4 Golden, Trails Into Reverie, Sonic SuperStars, RainCode, Dragon Quest Monsters, Metal Gear Solid Collection, Persona 5 Tactica, Red Dead Redemption, Batman Arkham Asylum, City and Knight, etc).
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced
Definitely a good time and runs well. Only a couple hours in but enjoying it. I finished oracle of seasons so now I can concentrate fully on this game.
Had a really funny glitch while in Mexico. It was a start of a mission( cant recall which), but Landon Ricketts and John were talking at a table, and an npc was sitting on Landons lap. Landon just kept phasing through him and talking. Almost looked like they were cuddling. Super funny.
It's a good port and currently the only way to play the game portably which is pretty wild. It shouldn't be $50, more $30, maybe even $40. I wouldn't write it off at all, but if the price bothers you that much then I'd wait for a sale. Otherwise it's RDR and it looks and plays just as great as it was when it released
I'm interested in this, but I agree with everyone who says it's too expensive. Just for comparison's sake, last year Square Enix released a really good, optimised-for-Switch port of Nier Automata, which included everything the earlier versions had plus some Switch-exclusive costumes for the main characters plus motion controls, and the initial asking price for that was 40 euros. Whereas Rockstar is asking 10 euros more of a port which has less content than the older versions of the game, and the game itself is 7 years older than NA, so I presume means it needed less optimisation. Doesn't sound that fair to me, so I'll be waiting for a sale.
