I might buy one of these sets just out of sheer curiosity to see how it works. It's a rather original idea, I will say that. Production cost will be pretty low because it's just cardboard, so I can see Nintendo doing well on these should they sell.
Kind of makes me think of a marriage between the AR games from the 3DS and these cardboard model planes I used to get at my local mom and pop department store as a little kid.

It's not going to sell well if it's seventy dollars. It is just cardboard. Hugely disappointing by Nintendo. I don't know one kid who likes playing with cardboard.

I dunno where the idea that they're selling cardboard comes from.

They're selling software that comes with cardboard.

I think that's a big difference. A regular Switch game costs around 50-60 bucks.

@ANeonChicken It's cardboard & a gamecart likely packed with games - I wouldn't be surprised if there will be updates down the line that allow even more content with further Labo releases.

Most of my nieces and nephews would love this, kids like making things & being able to imediately see, hear & play with the results of their crafting could be fantastic. There is the actual issue of how well this cardboard stands the test of time however.

@skywake Its like VR in that you are part of the game, directly interacting with it in a more than "Just a controller" way.

@Meowpheel VR gives me headaches (and it blurs slightly depending on the system used) actually so VR with one eye isn’t just a depth perception loss in comparison to someone with two eyes. At least not for me. It’s been a bit since I ‘ve had two but I did what passed for VR in the 90s prior to my amputation and I don’t remember getting headaches.

@skywake nobody is saying it is VR. What we are saying is this is a nice immersion side step for those of us that VR or 3ds is physically impossible. I can’t put my vision in the game but I can put the rest of me with the robot kit.

Blur is a thing I've seen mentioned before. Though the severity and side effects vary from person to person, and from game to game, as usual.

The recommended course of action with VR, one eye or not, is to try it for yourself before you decide to invest in it.

I think the idea is cool and as long as Nintendo doesn't pull some E3 2008 type nonsense I don't think this new direction will harm Switch's potential. I won't be buying it but to be honest with games like Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition I wouldn't have time anyway (seriously Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition will likely take around 1000 hours to complete especially if there's another season pass).

I have no kids, and aren't around any kids, but I still love this idea. The biggest negative is the price being high for both of them. In my opinion the Robot game and the Variety pack should be on the same game cart, and the robot game would be an extension (around 20 bucks) of the Variety pack cart. Because then Nintendo could add to the cart through DLC, and add to the real world through new packs. I guess it would sell less individually because of it, but that sounds like the best way to make Labo take off.

People might think I'm childish for my picture, and I am.

@GrailUK depends on your ocular setup i think. I could be wrong but there is still a difference between blind in one eye and one eye only (along with the optical nerve removed). VR gives me headaches but it might work for you. How nonexistent is your depth perception? I pretty much had to relearn how to judge distance and 23 years later I still walk into door frames or miss something I’m reaching for if I don’t line it up in my head correctly.

Typo.

Anyhoo, I’m sold on labo.

The cool thing is this is clearly supplementary and uses the Switch tech in a different way. Looking at the lineup its obvious the mini Direct was a way of clearing all those announcements for the core crowd before trying something new, instead of the Wii days where it was one or the other.

@ieatdragonz It's early days, but I tend to agree. Beyond the R&D, this ain't gonna cost Nintendo much, but if they could get it into the mainstream then it would soar. Pricing it this high, especially the robot (which I kinda suspect the software will be fairly limited, more like a tech demo than a full game) is going to prevent a lot of people adopting early.

At half the price this could really drive Switch sales in general, but at these prices it's difficult to predict.

lol... Cardboard. That's what the ''great'' Nintendo came up with? Cardboard. WTF is this crap. I'm not 10 anymore, I'm an adult now. I mean, that's probably what half of you were thinking that I was thinking when I saw that announcement. Yet I'm sat here with a big grin on my face. So colour me intrigued. It's just a bit pricey for my liking. It's not something you just buy to try out and play around with. It's a big box of materials (albeit cheap materials) and a game as well. I may get the Variety Kit. It's cheaper, it can do more, and it can be played whilst sitting on my arse. That's what counts after all. I'm not too worried about durability, someone will probably start selling 3D printed plastic alternatives at some point. Though, thinking about it, I wouldn't even know where I'd leave all of it. I've got a big box of useless Wii peripherals I don't use, but these things are quite a lot bigger than that.

I was excited until I saw the price point... 70 and 80 bucks for both packs is way too much. I think selling the software as a single 60 dollar game and the packs for 10 to 20 would be good... or maybe selling the packs with software for 30 to 40, but 150 bucks? Ugh. I want this to do well so much but the price just is'nt right.

The robot kit looks awesome, I just hope the software justifies it - there has to be some fairly solid gameplay, with some depth and longevity behind it, to justify the expense, the time spent building it, and the space that massive backpack will take up.

But I want it.

When they said they were announcing something "for kids" I knew right away that meant casual audience. And the only thought that came to mind was "whatever it ends up being, it's not going to interest me... it's just not, it never has and it never will"

Then I watch the video.

At first, I was blown away by the piano key making sounds despite being DIY cardboard. That grabbed my attention right away and the wheels in my mind immediately started spinning with curiosity. After I saw the entire video I was legitimately impressed. I wasn't sure it was for me, but I was impressed with how far they were stretching the technology of this little system. It was an impressive feat of ingenuity, if nothing else.

But the more this sinks in, the more I'm interested in it. That fishing game seems to be super fun. That Giant Robot game? Oh my goodness. I don't think I could live with myself knowing such a game exists without trying it for myself. And that motorcycle with handlebars where the screen shows the road... how cool is that! The piano, the little shotgun, even the freaking little girl's DOLL HOUSE looked interesting lol.

I love it. It took a little bit to sink in, but... I love it. I absolutely love it. I never thought I'd see the day they could bring a casual focused game with accessories to market that would get me this interested... that would actually make me genuinely excited to play.

Very much not for me. But I find how polarized people are about it interesting. People either love or hate it it seems. I don't think it is a strictly bad idea, but I have serious doubts about it's viability. My only interest in it is what effect it might have on the Switch and Nintendo in general. I hope it doesn't result in a string of silly gimmicks like this.

What I love about the Switch is that it is, a game console. Designed to play games anywhere, anytime. With a polished, traditional control scheme. It's innovative yet straight forward.

This Labo... While it might be fun, it's very gimmicky.
