Topic: Next Nintendo Direct?

The mario kart x nonsense is so random. There's literally no reason they would skip 9. Tour and home circuit are spinoffs. I don't see anyone suggest they would call it Mario Kart 11. The only reasons people say it will be called Mario Kart 10 is because they think Mario Kart X sounds cool or supports their nintendo kart fantasies, or because they're Tour enthusiasts who desperately want it to be counted as a mainline game. Skipping 9 because it's unlucky is even dumber. Not even just Nintendo but look at every Japanese gaming company. Mario Party 9, Megaman 9, Final Fantasy 9, Dragon Quest 9, etc. It's not a theory, it's just wishful thinking. The next Mario Kart doesn't have to be called Mario Kart 9, but it's definitely not going to be Mario Kart 10.

Also, think about previous Mario Kart games which have no numbers attached on the title.
Can we consider Mario Kart Wii as Mario Kart 6, Mario Kart DS = Mario Kart 5, Mario Kart GameCube = Mario Kart 4, Mario Kart GBA = Mario Kart 3, Mario Kart N64 = Mario Kart 2, Mario Kart SNES = Mario Kart 1 ?

The numerical in order was really correct.

Also, the numbers as the title started from 3DS as Lucky 7, on Wii U and Switch as Mobius Unlimited / Infinity style of number 8.

If we consider Mario Kart handphone = Mario Kart 9, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit = Mario Kart 10, so the next Mario Kart on Switch 2 will be Mario Kart 11 or X1 for cool looking style of number 11.

@Sigran102 Never disregard 'sounds cool' in marketing. This isn't just another sequel... Nintendo needs to make a sequel of the second best selling Nintendo exclusive ever (selling far more than any Zelda or mainline Mario or Pokemon game); it is the top apart from the anomaly which is Wii Sports. MK8 will have also sold for a full decade or more by the time the sequel comes out. Do I think it will be called 10? No. But X is a possibility as is something without any numbers. I'm sure Nintendo marketing department is hitting their heads hard on this one so it won't necessarily be something we can predict, although 9 is certainly still a possibility.

@Anti-Matter The numbers on consoles line up perfectly except for Home Circuit because that is the only Mario Kart spinoff game ever to be on console.

@FishyS if it's not about the number, then why X specifically? There are plenty of random names Nintendo could go with that would sound cool. Also, remember this is the company the changed the Nintendo Revolution to the Nintendo Wii. They probably care less about cool names than any other company in the industry.

X is a number 10 in Roman number and X is very rare alphabet we use and for some reason, X as the beginning letter sounds cool for certain titles. For example the songs by Tatsh such as Xepher, Xevel. Xanadu by Olivia Newton John.
Konami has used the X as their DDR games with title Dance Dance Revolution X in year 2008 to celebrate 10th anniversary of DDR.
Square Enix used Roman number X as their 10th Final Fantasy game.
Except, Capcom used X for Monster Hunter X and Monster Hunter XX that has no correlation with number 10 (X) and 20 (XX).

X just doesn't seem on-brand to me...it's just a bit too edgy (if pronounced like the letter X) or a bit too archaic (if considering the roman numeral) to fit in with the theming of Mario Kart.

That is, unless it conveniently fits in with the game's gimmick, like 8 representing a zero-gravity course.

Honestly I'd prefer them to ditch the numbering.

@Sigran102 If they were to go down the route of X, it could be stuff like:

• More focus on crossovers (i.e. Smash Kart while keeping the Mario Kart branding) given X is used for crossovers (e.g. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate X Final Fantasy VII was used for the Sephiroth trailer)
• Elimination being a new mechanic either in the battle royale sense or the F-Zero X Death Race sense
• There ends up being a story mode that's a treasure hunt

So it will be called: Mario Kart: Ditch! (you ditch the cars)

Mario Kart: Hit & Run will never happen but would be a right laugh

I’d play the hell out of a Mario kart game which mixed platforming and racing, like Crash TTR did years ago. Mario quality platforming mixed with racing? Sign me up

I think the idea of a "Mario kart wonder" could be cool honestly, like halfway through the track gets all weird or something.

@GalaxicGlobe Yeah! Something like that seems like such a natural evolution for the series.
Throw in everything the games have introduced so far (tricks, gliding, anti-grav etc.) and you've got all the ingredients to make something super wacky and creative if done right.
I'd love to see Wonder effects carry over to future Mario spin offs

Why is it "wishful thinking"? Frankly I couldn't care less what they call it. I'm not a "Tour Enthusiast". It's just someone said they might call it 10 to skip 9 for a more marketable number. Using the excuse of 9 was Tour because why not. And and there are very notable examples of other companies doing the same. So it's not that crazy a suggestion

At the end of the day it's just a name so I'm not sure where your passionate response against it is coming from.......

I mean, they make names like Switch and Wii, so in some sense they seem to care far more about cool names (catchy and marketable cross-language and age group) than most companies. As opposed to PS1, PS2, etc. Or for that matter 'Breath of the Wild' as opposed to e.g. Final Fantasy 726. I don't know if they would go with X, I just think for such a momentus sequel the marketing people might decide on something more eye-catching than '9'.

It matters not what you intended, the topic of this thread is officially Mario Kart names now. 😝 At least until we actually have some direct-related things to gossip about. Which might already be starting with the Mario Day festivities coming up.

On the one hand I want to try it... on the other hand I will want to keep playing and it is still 2 weeks away!
