Would have given it a 10/10 just for MGS anyway, but even without that there was still plenty to like for me, primarily Star Ocean 2 R(really wish the first game got the same treatment) and everything with Mario
Mario Wonder releases on the same day as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 ... sorry Nintendo.
Somehow I think the press will be much more filled with Mario on that day. spider-man may be well known in movies, but as a game Mario is definitely much more of a household name. Maybe more to the point in terms of sales, there are like 90 million more Switches out there than PS5s.
It's about as good as I could have expected given that nearly all my favourite Nintendo franchises already saw a release during the first half of the year. There are plenty of games I'd give a go even if there aren't any must haves leaping out at me.
Aside from the already announced Baten Kaitos remaster, my wallet will be appreciating the rest, and the backlog pile will be getting a chance to catch up.
Oh, and I thoroughly recommend Vampire Survivors to anyone who hasn't experienced it yet. You can already play it on any old phone or potato PC, so I suspect that's not too many, but it should be right at home on the Switch as well.
I thought it was really good. Yes the new announcements were a bit Mario heavy, but some big surprises nonetheless (even when some of the things shown were rumored). Also really showed that the Switch still has some games left in the tank, it's pretty clear that they're not quite ready to move on from the Switch yet, we probably won't see a successor until 2025 at the earliest at this point (especially because of Mario Wonder, you don't come out with a new 2D Mario game a year if you plan to move on soon, you save something like that for the next gen launch)
Mario RPG looks utterly stunning, the new Peach game intrigues me, and Mario Wonder. Ohhhh Mario Wonder. This game is exactly what 2D Mario needed. 2D Mario has been pretty stale for over a decade now and this game is a desperately needed shakeup. And it's just so wacky and trippy, which are exactly the kinds of Mario games I love. Nintendo is really not pulling any punches here trying to turn the page from the stale and repetitive feeling NSMB games.
Beyond Mario, Pikmin 4 is also looking good and shadow dropping remasters of the first 2 games is a nice surprise. Nintendo is really trying to push for Pikmin to be a successful franchise and it's working on me, ever since the 3 Deluxe demo I've become more and more intrigued by Pikmin so I might just be a full fledged fan when all this is said and done.
I'm not quite as hyped with what they showed for Pokemon. SV DLC showed a bit more footage of the new areas and they look neat, but I want to see new gameplay (in this case most likely new sidequests, facilities, etc.). They're not showing off any of that yet, just the areas themselves and some of the Pokemon being added. Detective Pikachu also isn't my thing, so not really excited to see that return.
Disappointed with no Metroid at all. Not even a remaster of Prime 2, but I even thought Prime 4 had a good chance of appearing. With Prime 4 being the only other game beside Pikmin 4 that we knew about and having been 4 years since the game restarted development, you would've thought they'd have shown something. Just what is going on with this game? It feels like it should be ready (or at least close enough to see something) at this point.
So yeah, definitely one of the better Directs in recent history. I was wrong about A LOT, but they defied my expectations in positive ways.
I was thinking about this while I was getting ready for work this morning. Nintendo's now shadow dropped Gamecube-era games on Switch during the last two Directs. I'm fully convinced this trend will continue until we see what happens in September. If they drop one then, I'm expecting it to continue almost indefinitely. What do yall think?

@Owl1 Sunshine got an HD port on the Super Mario 3D All Stars thing. Sadly, it was limited edition, and my digital version got corrupted when a certain idiot tried to buy V bucks on my switch (it’s so stupid I can’t help but laugh)

I'm a Dream Fighter. Perfume is Love, Perfume is Life.
I wonder if we could get an HD version of the GC Animal Crossing... Just a thought.
It would be neat... Nintendo seems to be a fan of porting GC games over, with Metroid Prime and now Pikmin. And if not Animal Crossing, what else? Thousand Year Door? Kirby Air Ride? Dare I say it, Doshin the Giant?? I hope this GC remaster "trend" (if you can even call it that yet) continues
Bringing back Super Mario Sunshine in some form (probably a re-release of 3D All Stars)
Wind Waker HD + Twilight Princess HD
But I'd love to see other 1st party GCN stuff as well like:
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance (+ the Wii game Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn)
F-Zero GX
TTYD
Pokemon Colosseum + XD Gale of Darkness
Star Fox Adventures + Star Fox Assault
Kirby Air Ride
Regarding stuff like Double Dash, Mario Party 4-7 and Melee I'd prefer its content added to the Switch equivalent instead (e.g. MK8 Deluxe, Mario Party Superstars, Smash Ultimate).
@Fizza The Direct gave that impression as it was easily strong enough that it could've had an E3 presence with a cool looking Mario themed booth. Nintendo choosing to not be part of E3 this year when they had that strong of a 2nd half of 2023 lineup made it seem clear that problems with E3 itself was the reason why Nintendo dropped out, not Nintendo's upcoming lineup.
