@dionysos283 Sure. If they have at least a minor upgrade (high definition, improved frame rate, widescreen support), I'd take them. These are three of the best games ever, as far as I'm concerned, all in one package. As others have mentioned, if Nintendo were to remaster (or remake) them, then we certainly wouldn't be getting three games and it would be $60 for just one of the games. I'd rather have the three of them in one package than just one of the games, but with more work done to it. That's just my opinion though.

All three have aged really well and in my opinion don't need a lot doing to them. It would be nice to be able to play Galaxy on a console that isn't the Wii or Wii U. Also, being able to play official portable versions would be really nice.

And I know people will make the Crash or Spyro comparison, but it's apples and oranges in my opinion. Those games were all built on the same system and used the exact same assets and engine for each title. They also aged poorly and were games that really benefited from being remade.

Nintendo's pricing is often controversial though, so I understand others may disagree. For example, I thought the Switch port of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze was overpriced. They're just a company that does not like to devalue their own media. Sometimes I'm ok with it (Wind Waker HD was excellent) and other times I'm not (Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze).

For me not including Galaxy 2 in the package breaks the deal. If Galaxy 2 were included, I'd would probably still buy it for 60 bucks.

@rallydefault The All Stars Collection wasn’t a port, the games were all remade in the same engine as Super Mario World so they were actually remakes/remasters. But if this rumour of the 3D collection is true then, I don’t see Nintendo doing anything than ROM dumps with a fancy menu to navigate between the games in the collection.

Ah, yes! I am kind of remembering the graphics, now. It's been so long lol Did they add any gameplay elements? I know they added the Lost Levels which we hadn't seen in the US, but otherwise was it just the graphics veneer?

@Grumblevolcano @Dezzy Considering how much work and effort some developers put into their remasters, I hope that Nintendo is able to remake their own iconic games properly. No excuses.

You know how Nintendo's pricing is. If they actually fully remastered any of these games, they'd be sold individually at full retail price.

The only way we're getting a collection of 3 or 4 games is if each game has had very minimal upgrades.

The sources say that it would be either a collection or separate releases like The Legend of Zelda remasters.

No it wasn't just a graphical update for all 4 games, obviously the sound was updated/re-arranged/remixed to 16-bit as well,. and all of the games finally got a save feature where you can start at the beginning of each world (the originals had no save at all). In the case of Lost Levels you could even select to start at every beaten stage.

The Wii version was a direct port of the SNES version, but the SNES version was a carefully made remake that tops the NES originals in every way.

True and also the controls were slightly improved.

All the sources (except that Twitter user) say it could be separate releases. They saw titles or heard about Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy and deduced that it would be a collection or separate releases like The Legend of Zelda remasters. They also heard about a new Paper Mario for 2020, which was real, and Super Mario 3D World port, which is very likely considering all the other Wii U ports. The only title that isn't included in the reports is Super Mario Galaxy 2 but I don't think that it will be skipped, it doesn't make sense.

I hope they are separate releases, as surely it would increases the chances that Zippo is wrong and the remaster/remake is much more comprehensive?? If I had to pay a bit more, I would be happy to get each game if the quality was similar to Links Awakening, especially for 64 and Sunshine.

@SKTTR
Interesting, interesting. So people think these will not include any updates?

rallydefault

mr_mercury

I genuinely think IF this Mario 3D collection becomes a reality it will be ports and nothing more. They will charge £40-£50 for it and will include Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy 2 (maybe), and 3d world. In my opinion, a remaster is out of the question. As already stated, if they were to remaster them, they would sell them individually and at full price per game.

MarioBrickLayer

@rallydefault It's mostly speculation at this point!

@mr_mercury The only thing most people seem certain about is that 3D world will not be in the collection and will be a "Deluxe" standalone release. This makes sense, especially if the latest rumours are true and there will be additional content.

That is an interesting theory. I really hope we hear something soon.

@MarioBrickLayer Yeah, that will be Super Mario 3D World Deluxe like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. The other games are either a collection or separate remasters, hopefully the latter.

Lets assume the announcement is on Monday (20th), I bet if Nintendo don't confirm it today or tomorrow that it will be a shadow drop, which surely would mean a Paper Mario style announcement or a mini rather than a full direct?

MarioBrickLayer

Dezzy

If they're doing an actual Direct, they seriously need to show us more Zelda. That was surely intended for this E3 originally.

If the uprezzed galaxy looks as good as what's on the nvidia shield I am more than happy. Please consider bringing over Wii punch out.

The Galaxy games DO look really good if you just output them at higher resolution.

There's no kind of special adjustments or new graphical tricks needed. Just a straight higher resolution output and they look brilliant. This is on Dolphin in 1080p.

It's kinda similar to how Windwaker graphics have aged so well. If you go with quite simple art styles, they age really well.

@Dezzy They do really need to add antialiasing too though it looks like. Between the dithering and the rough edges, I think that'd clean up the picture significantly. But yeah, as someone who's ripped their own copy to play on the PC, I can confirm an absolutely gorgeous game to this day, and looks even better in motion at that resolution.

So many Wii rumors lately. Between those two, Prime Trilogy, and NMH 1&2, plus the ones already on Switch that's about half of the titles worth bringing over.

Ralizah

Sunshine has aged really well, too. I played it a few years back and was shocked by how good it looked. The GameCube's library is actually full of lookers, I have to say. REmake, TTYD, Sunshine, Wind Waker, etc. all look really good to this day.

Grumblevolcano

@Dezzy Given most companies that would've had a June event (whether specifically E3 or in June but not connected to E3) is splitting their event into 2, Nintendo's probably doing the same:

  • Microsoft - Part 1 in May, Part 2 in July
  • Ubisoft - Part 1 in July, Part 2 is probably in late August
  • Sony - Part 1 in June, Part 2 is rumoured to be in August
    ...etc.

So my guess would be the Direct on Monday if it happens covers July - December 2020 and then a Direct in September announces a bunch of new announcements for 2021 and gives an update on at least BotW 2 and Bayonetta 3.

Regarding Shinobi's tweet tease yesterday that asked which group of Mario games we prefer, it got me thinking:

Wasn't it implied originally that there were to be other Mario games outside of the 3D ones to be released with the anniversary as well? On the tweet, it showed Paper Mario 64, TTYD, Yoshi's Island, and a couple of Mario & Luigi games as well.
