I'm looking for some advice on how to go about doing this... Basically I have my Switch connected via HDMI to a surround receiver which allows me to enjoy surround sound from it. The surround receiver is then connected to my TV. This means that the surround receiver has to be set to the Switch as the source to then send Switch video to the TV and play Switch audio from its speakers. This is all fine and works brilliantly with great surround sound from compatible games.
However, I'd like to be able to listen to music sometimes while playing, and this setup stops me from being able to do this. If I select a music source on the amp, then I don't get Switch video sent to the TV. Has anyone got any ideas on how to set this up? I don't want to lose surround sound from the Switch and at the moment the only solution I can think of is to rewire everything behind my TV whenever I want to listen to music, then put it all back again when I want surround for my games. Not ideal!
Does your TV connect to the internet? I like to listen to streaming services like Pandora or iHeartRadio through my TV if the game I'm playing has annoying, repetitive music. Of course your TV also needs to support picture-in-picture to experience the music and the game at the same time.
My setup is expensive as it requires a $160 capture card and a good setup involving your PC and consoles. But basically, I display the game on my PC monitor and open up the Elgato software where sound can play on my desktop just fine. Then I load up music/YouTube/podcasts in conjunction. It's what I'm currently doing in Fire Emblem mid-combat.

I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
@Magician I might be able to do something like this in my TV but then the music would be coming out of my TV's speakers rather than the amp. Ideally what I want is music coming out of my proper amp speakers while also being able to play on the Switch. I think in all likelihood what I want isn't possible and this is just another annoying consequence of the Switch not supporting simple Dolby digital surround sound like every other console does...
@Danmick99 Not sure.. I have a Bose sound bar which is plugged into to tv via optical cable. When I change the output from TV to Bluetooth I can listen to music from my mobile whilst the TV speakers take over for the audio from my games console. Not sure if that helps you but it works for my setup.
Some of Mario Odyssey is seriously giving heart palpitations.... that plumber is trying to kill me!
I mean the simplest solution is probably to just use an external music source, or to plug the Switch directly into the TV and run music through your sound bar.
