Topic: Is the switch the best value in gaming?

Ha nice moniker play of words btw! Value really does come down to a matter of perspective but I think you’re agreeing that Switch games/ consoles tend to appreciate in value which alone would make it the “better” value/investment. I’m looking at it more so as the console that grants its players the most freedom to play games. It’s damn near invaluable in that regard!…if your willing to accept some of its limitations of course!

@Rainz The Switch is the NES of hybrid consoles. It's already gone down in history and will be fondly remembered. Now, the SNES used to be my fave console ever, so I'm looking forward to the next Switch haha. The only thing I would say is games do hold their value more on Switch. I suppose because they keep selling!

Indeed PC has high value but they are more of a mulitimedia device as opposed to strictly dedicated gaming machine. Personally I don’t want to have to line up for hours just to buy high in demand graphics cards…and those things aren’t cheap! Could buy multiple switches for the price if 1 graphics card. They do offer the highest form of customizations but there’s a cost of time and $…personally I don’t want to have to fiddle with settings just to optimize my gameplay. It’s a great option to have but it is catered to a niche market. I don’t judge the quality of a game just off of the frame rate or graphical fidelity per say.

The Switch premium! I guess that’s the added cost of portability? As another poster mentioned , the game prices may be higher however Nintendo games and hardware do tend to appreciate in value over time so it balances out in a sense. It is frustrating paying more for a lower quality version of a game tho!

Absolutely! It’s still insane to consider this will be Nintendo’s highest selling console , potentially the highest selling console of All time…and to do that in this day in age is an achievement! I’m still blown away by the evergreen title that is MK8…best selling game over 2 console generations and the bastids have only prolonged it dominance with the booster course pack! It makes sense to launch the Super Switch with MK9! I still have everyone in my Nintendo consoles so the value of the nostalgia alone is immense!

@6ch6ris6 Literally took the words right out of my mouth. Honestly, I end up buying more games for PC thanks to the sales Steam and GOG (personally, prefer the latter because of the lack of DRM) have, and I don't have to pay for online multiplayer, both of which saves money.

I enjoy playing games on my Switch, but I stand by PC being a better value in the long run because of sales and free online multiplayer.

@Rainz
I have a lot of games from different consoles as I think Nintendo Switch is not the only one video game machine I want to play.
Every games from different machines have their signature games that made them different each other and I would like to taste their diversity.
For example, I played PS1 and PS2 games for DDR games, BEMANI games, K-1 games, Bomberman games, 3D platformer games. PS3 is for Western cartoonish games, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper. PS4 is for Home builder games (Portal Knights, Dragon Quest Builders 1 & 2, The Sims 4), Farming games (SoS Friend of Mineral Town, Kitaria Fables, Harvest Moon One World, Doraemon SoS), kids franchise games. Wii and NDS is for casual and niche games. 3DS is for Pokemon games, Yokai Watch games, Mii games, etc. I like to collect a lot of different games too.

Interesting topic! As is usually the case, I’d agree with @GrailUK and say I’ve spent loads of $$ on Switch but it feels like a great value nonetheless. It still seems magical sometimes, the amount of fun this little console can produce.

Dollar for dollar, I doubt any other system would fit my preferences as well - I love indies and retro games, gaming with my kids, playing Japanese imports and owning games on physical media, and would really hate to miss out on Nintendo exclusives.

I liked the platform so much, I upgraded to an OLED. I’m actually transferring all my game data to it now, as I write. Mid-gen upgrades are rare for me (the last was a slim PS2), so I’m demonstrably happy with Nintendo’s work this gen. I’m just praying there is a Super Switch with total backwards compatibility next gen, so all our investments can be carried forward!

Value is subjectively defined by what you personally get out of it.

For me... yes. Switch OLED is by far the best value console I've ever owned. Every game I buy for it gives me access to 3 versions in 1: Handheld, console and portable console via tabletop. It's versatile nature and gyro aiming standard results in me playing more games, and playing those games more often. I've gotten more entertainment from Switch than any other gaming device I've owned, and I also own a gaming PC with 2080 ti, a PS5 and Xbox Series X.

I will say, if you're purely looking at value in terms of price/play ratio, Gamepass is by far the best. It didn't offer any value for me though because I can't stand playing games with aiming mechanics without gyro. However, now that the XIM Nexus controller exists and I can play Xbox games with proper gyro aiming, Gamepass is a massive value proposition. Still not as much as Switch because, not being hybrid hurts the utility of what's being offered, but I'd say it's the 2nd best value for me after Switch.

Not far behind that would be PC. Though games are fairly cheap and you can take advantage of Gamepass as well, and emulate older systems, the cost of entry is extreme compared to a $200-500 console. I spent $4k on my PC ($1k of that was upgrading to 10 TB high quality SSD storage because the games take up so much space and Steam backlog is massive), so the free online and saving on a Steam sale here or there versus other platforms doesn't really close the gap, not for several years anyways.

SteamDeck, however, is a massive value proposition. I got the $650 model, but the $399 model is pretty nuts. It gives you access to a large portion of the Steam library, with hybrid play via cloud saves if you also have a desktop PC (so higher value for existing PC owners than non-PC owners). It has Gyro aiming and can run GC/Wii/PSP games.

But ya, it all comes down to what you're going to get the most from. For me, Switch is certainly the platform I get the most from. But your mileage may vary.

Great post and I agree completely. For a game collector like me, the Switch is the best value.

The PSVR is the best VR system on the market today.

It depends on how much value you place on graphic fidelity. The Switch is the lowest bar for amazing-looking games. No doubt graphic-snobs turn their collective noses upwards if they're given the option to play a game on any other platform. From that perspective, PC gaming is still the best value in gaming. You just cannot beat a Steam sale.

Often times you'll find dozens of AAA games bundled together for the price of a Happy Meal.

A PC and swollen Steam account isn't worth **** if you don't use it. I've probably played more Switch in one year than I have my 10 year old PC in its lifetime.

You guys had me at blood and semen.
