This is probably a dumb question. Anyhow, I'm playing Resident Evil Remake on the Switch and wondered if this game is in 3D. It uses fixed cameras and pre-rendered backgrounds, and the character can only move on a flat plain, except the occasional stairs, where it's clear that the character is still not moving up and down the same way they would in a 3D game.
The small battery drain on the Switch indicates that it's either not in 3D at all, or only the character and enemies rotating on their flat plains uses real time 3D rendering. I don't know if I'm being clear enough, but I'm wondering if this game is just using tricks to make it appear as a 3D game, sort of like how Doom is a 2D game, or if it's a true 3D game were objects are manipulated in real time.
Either way, great game, would recommend. It's from a time when great games were made.
@Agriculture Resident Evil is pre-rendered backgrounds (2D) with 3D polygon assets like the player, the enemies, items, and certain (mostly interactive) objects. Invisible polygons with collision detection make it feel 3D.
Your character is moving around in an actual 3D space, but it's like everything is invisible. Then the game layers that in front of a 2D render of a pretty looking mansion.
If you were to make the actual 3D space visible, it would all be just plain featureless walls and floors. Which is why it's so light on the system.
Thanks SKTTR and Eel, this is exactly what I wondered. I also assumed the character moved around a featureless 3D space with a 2D render as background, because unlike older adventure games, the character doesn't skip between locations.
Yes, the characters and items are 3D, the backgrounds are 2D with invisible polygons. Moreover, Resident Evil Remake does an interesting thing, it also uses FMV for the sky, the water and some other things.

That's very clever. I always wondered if there was any game that played video clips as backgrounds. Another trick I like, which FFX also used, is to pan the still imagine up and down, matching the steps of the character, which gives a slight sense of movement to the still image.

The rainy sections on top of the train in Resident Evil Zero are some of the best full screen FMV backgrounds I've seen back then (on the Gamecube). Of course sections like these take up lots of space on the disc. Techs like these are rare, so I still remember them fondly.
@dharmajones93 In my opinion it's best played on a TV anyway.
@SKTTR Yes, both Resident Evil Remake and 0 used a lot of unique pieces, every single place is handcrafted in a way they're both scary and beautiful. Besides, they are not 100% dangerous but there are sections where you feel slightly comforted. They are masterpieces. 0 is a bit more complicated but second playthroughs are less confusing. I beat 0 in hard mode recently (on Xbox One X). I barely made it through but finally beat the final boss using the last bullets. "Normal" mode is the best difficulty setting in Resident Evil Remake and 0.
