Topic: Is Nintendo resting on its laurels?

I wouldn't say it's resting on its laurels, it's more that it has become incredibly arrogant due to the fact that their latest console have been such a huge success. At first that console totally deserved that success, Switch could be really great, but not now that Nintendo is behaving this way and being so arrogant with their own customers.

I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee

@GrailUK

You're right but :

MARIO 64
GOLDENEYE
STARFOX64
WAVERACE
PILOTWINGS64
KILLER INSTINCT
TUROK
STARWARS

God, you know how iconic those licences are ? I'm sorry but when I see exclusives such as :

1 2 SWITCH
Snipperclips
Nintendo Labo
ARMS
etc...

_+ Wii U ports
_+ inferior PS4/ONE ports (Ys VIII/DOOM etc...)

What's left ?

Xenoblade 2 which is not the best of the 3(for me) and unpolished...
Mario Odyssey (the most overated 3D Mario for me)
Splatoon 2 which is really a big enhanced version of the Wii U one.
Fire Emblem Warriors mehhh
etc...

I just wanna point the fact that the N64 exclusives are really stronger in term of impact.

Yeah and I'm almost convinced that if we have to pay for the online service IT'S BECAUSE the Switch is a success.
There is something wrong in the mentality behind it.

Care to point to phrases from NIN that says that? Successive comes with risk and thinking Outside the Box why else would we get a NSW that can Dock and go portable. Just like the other poster said Mountain_Man just reiterated we not NIN so don't go thinking you know what they know better. I think there's alot of second guesser here not those in the trenches of NIN that knows from what they read only. Maybe their line of thought to them isn't arrogance remember they are from a Japanese culture not yours. But Shrewd business minds knows when to look around and know what works and don't work as well to as well. Let's put this thought the NSW is 1.5 years old and we got complainers I call that a good job. If we didn't hear that it means they aren't doing good.

2018 wasnt bad. could use more original non port release from 1st party.
2017 was not bad, less 1st party ports. more 1st party original games (weather or not you like them. most were original. Arms and Snipperclips to be exact. )
2019 could be better.

imagine if they delay Kirby: Star Allies and Mario Tennis Aces from Fall 2018 to 2019. yes, would had the worst year, if these two didnt came out and more people complain. but, then we may gotten better games out of them. (although, Kirby on switch was just fine. )

Yes it was but without solid infos. I see that more as a test to have a global view and if it could impact the sells or not.
I'm almost convinced if the Switch wasn't a success from the start, Nintendo would have probably stop that idea.

Maybe I'm wrong but it's really what I think about the online.

@8-Bit_Superman

No absolutly not...
Do you remember the "lootboox episode" with EA ?
They tried, they did, and when they saw the terrible impact on the sells, they changed their politic because the players were smart enough to be united against that infamy.

Even if it's not the same, I think there is something in the same vein.

Isn't it usually 3rd parties that force paid online, the concept of "If you don't do paid online, we won't release games for your system"?

I don't understand this mentality that if the Switch doesn't see one AAA smash hit a month every month then it's somehow a disappointment. Even with its current "meager" library, there are more games for the Switch that I want than I have money to buy or time to play, and there's more on the way. That's more than enough for me to consider the Switch a success.

Wii U's first year was terrible (barely anything worth playing until September 2013), its second year was a lot better but didn't manage to improve hardware sales so year 3 onwards went downhill.

@Snaplocket

I respect your opinion but I think totally the opposite ! ^^

In 17 months, only 2 games (Kingdom Battle and Octopath Traveler) are great as Switch exclusives.

Xenoblade 2 is good but when you have played Xenoblade Wii and Xenoblade X, it's embarrassing how technically the game is disappointing.
Super Mario Odyssey is, from my perspective, the most overated 3D Mario Ever.
Splatoon 2 is an enhanced version of the 1st one.
And all the other games are "specials" 1 2 Switch, snipperclips, Nintendo Labo etc...

The incredible thing, after 17 months, is what I consider as great games ARE EVEN NOT MADE BY NINTENDO ! o_O

The awesome Nintendo games on the Switch are Wii U games :

Bayonetta 2
Donkey Kong CTF
MarioKart 8
Zelda Breath of The Wild
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
Hyrule Warriors
Lego City Undercover
etc...

I don't care to have 500 shovelwares and 200 android/Ios games on the Eshop...
The Switch has nothing really attractive that define its identity in terms of games.

Ok, it's a nice concept, ok you can take your game on the go (I personally don't care espacially when I saw how IMPOSSIBLE it is to play when it's sunny outside, the screen is not made to handle to much light :/)

So, I want Nintendo to succeed but for me, they have to bring BIG Nintendo games, those games that we all love, those game changers, those games that you'll talk about even in 20 years still...

Who's gonna talk about 1 2 Switch(which is a shame that its not offered in the box BTW) in 20 years ?
Nobody does today already...

Probably because you never had a WiiU... ^^

I have a Wii U. And a Wii. And a 3DS. I used to have a DS. And I still have a Game Boy Advance SP that my son likes to play. But the Switch is my all-time favorite Nintendo console. I don't even care that games like Mario Kart 8 are technically Wii U ports, or that I could play Skyrim and Doom on my PC. They're still terrific games, and prefer the Switch because I don't have to choose between sitting down to play a "big" game or playing portable. One system can do it all, and that works for me.

I understand your point but tell me, if the next system would be launched in 3 years and the line up is made of Mario Kart 8 giga deluxe edition, Splatoon 2 alpha prime +, Super Mega Mario Odyssey etc... Are you gonna buy them again and again ?

Do you think that it's abnormal to play NEW GAMES on you new system ?

I'm sorry you haven't been into Nintendo's recent titles, but you're in the minority to say the least. shrugs

Though your complaints about Nintendo's games not being the best is not some impossible new thing. The best Wii U games were Shovel Knight and Rayman Legends, no one even bought Wonderful 101. And BOTW was at the end. 3DS had similar issues imho, and was obviously way less powerful...

If we're using unpopular, subjective opinions for debate, anyway.

As for an actual answer that actually has some relevance to the main quest, it's really hard to say with Nintendo's mindset sometimes for it's stranger and more controversial decisions. Nintendo could be not trying its best with certain aspects (paid online going forward being the most likely example), or maybe they are biding their time because the Switch is doing so well that they can afford to slowly release things (the non-gaming services people want) and improvements that people want for the Switch. Or maybe there's some issues with how chaotic Nintendo likely has been since Iwata's passing. Or maybe Nintendo just hasn't hired the most/best programmers for certain aspects of the Switch, partially because Nintendo is doesn't have a lot of layoffs compared to many other major gaming companies. Or maybe Marty Mcfly went back in time, disguised himself as Darth Vader and told the new president how best to update and sell the Switch going forward, who knows really? Nintendo is such a secretive company that I have no idea, and you don't either.

I'm probably more in line with the "general audience" than other people who visit this site. I suspect the majority of Switch buyers are what are disdainfully referred to as "casual gamers" who don't visit forums like this to debate the merits of upcoming releases. And considering how the Switch is on track to beat sales projections a second year in a row, it seems the "general audience" does not share this forum's pessimism.

@RunGMhx I think Nintendo certainly could do more. The Switch is, hands down, my favorite gaming system since my Game Boy Color. And I have played basically everything between then and now in terms of hardware except obscure stuff like the Ouya.

Things like Netflix and YouTube, and better eshop curation I completely agree on. I also disagree with their current approach to retro content but hope to have my opinion changed once they start releasing games on it. Hopefully those NES titles are just the very small tip of the iceberg that will eventually lead to a flood of retro options from all eras NES to Gamecube.

On first party titles, I half agree and half disagree. Part of what makes Nintendo games incredible is the insane level of refinement and polish that goes into them. Games like Odyssey and BotW (NOT a port by the way, it wasn't released on Wii U first, it was just a given as a final parting gift to Wii U as well) get that extreme level of polish by putting a huge amount of resources and time into them and it shows. Yes Nintendo is a huge company, but even they have to be careful about dividing up their resources too much. Or we lose that incredible polish. And they aren't Sony or Microsoft with huge amounts of staff from other departments to draw on if needed. That said, I do think they could do somewhat more. I actually think more Wii U ports are warranted. Games like Mario Maker, the HD Zelda remasters, 3D World and others would all easily sell again. However I also think they should return to that golden standard they had last year of one major release a month. Alternating between ports, 3rd party major releases, and new major 1st party content.

But in the end, I don't think they are resting on their laurels, I think they are just being more conservative than they need to be.

Oh yeah, and Splatoon 2 is not a port, it's a full blown sequel and one of the most successful and best games Nintendo has put out in the last decade.
