Doom 2016 is my personal favourite because it feels more like OG Doom. Plus, it has classic levels which are unlockable and playable with 2016 style gameplay.
Doom Eternal has a lot more to it. The level design is sprawling instead of 2016's compact approach. More enemy and weapon variety as well. Power ups also have more to them in this entry. Additionally, there's an experience system that unlocks lots of customisation stuff.
Can't really comment on the multiplayer, but the single player has a lot of replayability.
I haven’t played Doom Eternal yet. But Doom 2016 seems to be easier, has more horror elements (walking through dark corridors, occasional jump scare), and the graphical downgrades aren’t as severe. Doom Eternal has harder enemies and multiple platforming sections. But both are fantastic games, and if you like one you’ll probably like both.
I haven't played the Switch versions but on PS4/5 I much prefer Doom 2016 as it stayed true to the spirit of the original. Eternal was like Doom directed by Michael Bay with everything turned up to 11, frustratingly hard enemies, lots of annoying platforming and seemingly no difficulty curve. On the other hand the soundtrack is a banger.
I loved Doom 2016, I found Eternal completely exhausting. It's got more stuff and its probably overall the better designed game, but I was ready for it to be done by the time I was about halfway through and it just kept on going. I preferred the raw simplicity of Doom '16s arsenal too over Eternal's dozens of situational tools.

I'd argue Doom 16 is the best pure fps game released in the past decade.
Meanwhile I haven't played Doom Eternal yet to form an opinion on it.

@Zeldafan79 I'd mostly put it down to the fact that the game was delayed a lot, so it mostly missed the hype train of the other releases.
There are also the usual caveats about releasing large games on cartridge. Nobody wants to buy one that only contains an 8GB stub, so you need to make an even larger download before you can start playing, but nobody wants to pay the premium on a 32GB cartridge either.
There's been some speculation that Limited Run Games, who've handled the other physical releases of the Doom games on Switch, might step up. However, it'd be an expensive and potentially risky release for them unless Bethesda were prepared to step up and bear some of the costs. So, best not to wait up on that.
So far as the relative merits of the games go, Doom 2016 was certainly a blast to play on the Switch, particularly handheld, but I'd think that Eternal lends itself more to playing on a platform like the PS4 or the PC that can deliver the visual spectacle. By all means get it on Switch if that's all you've got though, or if handheld play outweighs all other considerations.
