Eh, to be fair, the Wii was fully functional out of the box as well. You didn't need a Classic Controller, a second Wii Remote or component cables. In that case one could also argue that you need a second pair of Joy-Con for multiplayer/co-op, because not every game support the single Joy-Con configuration. Or what about an SD-card? I don't think the Switch is any different to other Nintendo consoles in that regard. It does what it has to do, and if you want more, there are umpteen million overpriced accessories to choose from.

As I said, you kinda needed those accessories to fully enjoy the basic day 1 experience on Wii. To play two player for most of the games in Wii Sports and Wii Play? You needed a second WiiMote. If you wanted to be able to play VC titles from the SNES and N64? You needed the Classic Controller. If you wanted your games to run in 480p rather than 480i? You needed the component cables.

With the Switch you don't need any of that. In order to play two player for games in 1-2 Switch and the other big early one Snipperclips? You only need the bundled pair of Joycon. When VC games appear and you want to play SNES/N64/GBA games? The lack of a proper D-Pad isn't ideal but the bundled Joycon should work fine. And in order to run these games at 1080p/60Hz? I don't need a cable that's not in the box.

I'll put it another way. At the end of the Wii's life I ended up with 6x WiiMotes, 2x Classic Controllers, 1x WaveBird, 2x Nunchucks, 3x Motion Plus, Component Cables and a LAN Adapter. Ignoring for a second that I collected a few special edition WiiMotes and will likely do the same again for the Switch. To get the same functionality as this on the Switch? In addition to the Switch itself I'd need to get a second Joycon pair, 2x Pro Controllers and a LAN Adapter. I think it's fair to say that's quite a bit less.

I understand your argument, but I think we have a different idea of what you ''need'' in order to experience the system. Would you also say that you need a PSVR for the PS4 for example? Because you need the PSVR to play VR games. What if Nintendo releases a Joy-Con Plus though? I guess you need that one as well. What about SD-cards? Wii Sports was a bundled game, 1-2-Switch isn't, etc. I just don't think that there's a big difference in the end, everyone is always going to get some accessories (or maybe not), but I still think that none of that is necessary at all.

You don't need PSVR to play the flagship PS4 games. Hell, with the lack of local multiplayer options you probably don't even need a second controller for the PS4. If we're going to get pedantic about this then lets just say that I'm talking about accessories that are necessary for the most basic things an consumer is likely to want from it. For the Wii that was the VC service and basic local-multiplayer.

As for your other points I don't consider the SD Card as essential given that you don't need it if you buy games physically. It's possible to avoid needing it. And yes Wii Sports was bundled with the Wii and 1-2 Switch isn't bundled with the Switch. But in the box with the Switch you effectively get a Classic Controller, Two WiiMotes and a Nunchuck. That's ignoring the fact that it's both a home console AND a portable console. So I think you're getting more there than what you got with the Wii even without the bundled game.
