@BruceCM gotcha. I knew the switch is region free but I've never bought another region's game. So you simply pop it in and in any region, it'll fire up with no issues?
Well, I haven't imported any games, @NintendoByNature ..... But there's certainly a few people here who regularly do so! Your Switch won't know where the cart is from. The usual thing to check with Asia releases is just whether they have English in the languages as they don't always do so
I'd imagine reviews for the game would be coming out at anytime now. Waiting to see if it's easily accessible or more of a product of its time like some jrpgs can be. I never played chrono trigger either so I'm unsure what to expect. I'm leaning towards grabbing it anyway, but it'd be nice to know what I'm in for.
Let's hope they bring Chrono Trigger to Switch as well, @NintendoByNature .... I've never played Cross before, so I've got very little idea about that 1 myself! I think there were a few differences between the gameplay in them, though. But I'm sure reviews will appear soon enough if you want to wait for them

Yes. Software updates aren't tied to your NNID either. Pop in the cartridge and away you go. I can attest as I have plenty of cartridges from multiple regions. I'm based in Australia, but I have European, USA, Japanese, and Southeast Asian cartridges.
The only potential complication that could arise relates to DLC, which may require an NNID from a compatible region, but if the cartridge version is identical to what is sold in your region's eShop, then it wouldn't be a problem (pressing + and accessing the eShop page of the game will determine that easily; if the game doesn't show up, then the version on the cartridge is different to what is sold in your region's eShop, and any DLC will not be compatible with it).
And if the packaged release includes a DLC code of any kind, then it likely won't be compatible unless you have an NNID tied to an appropriate eShop region.
For example, I recently imported the physical release of Fatal Frame/Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water, and being the Asian release, it came with an eShop code that would require a Hong Kong NNID. Ironically, if I had imported the Japanese release, it would have had Japanese packaging (the Asian version's artwork is in English) as well as a Japanese eShop code, and I would have been able to redeem it without issue as I also have a Japanese NNID, but I don't think it's worthwhile creating a Hong Kong NNID for a mere costume.
@Silly_G very good explanation thank you. Good to know for future buys. Ultimately, I might just grab this digitally to avoid spending nearly triple the price, but its great to have options.
@BruceCM good stuff, I'm sure we'll see a review here tomorrow or Wednesday.
Highly likely, @NintendoByNature .... It'd be best if the Switch version is reviewed specifically for those here, although there shouldn't be any particular issues with that version But I'll be playing it on Steam if you really need to wait for me to report back on that one
I'm super excited for this, but I have played it once before and I just started FFVII for the first time ever, so I can wait for the inevitable Square Enix sale.
OK, it'll certainly get discounted sooner or later, @NintendoByNature & @Xyphon22 ..... I'll report back on the Steam version when I've played some, at least
Its been a very long time like 18 years ago pretty much that i last played Chrono Cross even Chrono Trigger for my old Playstation.
the only things I still remember are Mojo, Skelly and the little alien guy and the very long process of recruiting Nikki or Guile to get into that mansion. I would always go to gamewinners and gamefaqs to check on how to get Mojo and Skelly and read the whole sidequest stuff involving Nikki and the mermaids
