The team that made the makes 3D Mario had 8 years to work with, they can easily have worked on more than 1 game.

I really don't get what there is to argue. The logic is as basic as they come really:

  • New console is released, Nintendo wants to entice as many people as possible to buy it
  • Nintendo needs strong first party lineup to get Switch 2 going
  • 3D Mario is one of Nintendo's best selling franchises
  • Release new 3D Mario on Switch 2 = Profit!!!

Nintendo can easily wait a couple of months or even until 2026, so that DK sells as much as possible and is not sabotaged by 3D Mario, and simply announce the new 3D Mario then.

@Haruki_NLI In the department where they are producing Splatoon and Animal Crossing, do they have some teams shuffling between the two simultaneously or working on one at a time?

@alexwolf What I'm wondering is why not release DK in 2026 and 3D Mario in 2025 if they have a 3D Mario in the first place?

Because they don't want their biggest games to come out too close to each other; if they're more spread out, they'll gather more attention and help to sell more of the consoles by enticing people to buy a Switch 2 so they could play the next big game. Mario Kart World was chosen to be a launch title, so that means they'll want to wait for several months before releasing the next big hitter. Even though Donkey Kong is not obscure, it doesn't count among their biggest franchises, so they can afford to release it so soon after Mario Kart, especially since there are people (like myself) who love Nintendo's platformers but don't care about racing games.

There could be multiple reasons:

  • 3D Mario was not ready
  • They didn't want to release two major big hitters so close to each other (Mario Kart World and 3D Mario)
  • DK Bananza will appreciate the console launch boost it will receive, while Mario 3D will sell like crazy anyway
  • They are saving Mario 3D for a less stacked period, when they won't have any other first party releases

But the number 1 reason is they didn't want two huge Mario titles releasing so close to each other.

@alexwolf It's strange if it's "We don't want two Mario games releasing close to eachother," given that they had no problems with all the Mario games releasing close together last year. We got Mario RPG, Peach Showtime, Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, and Mario and Luigi in the span of around a single year.

@VoidofLight

You missed the big hitters part. Buyers only have so much money to spend, if you release two behemoths so close to each other, they will canibalise each others sales, that's for sure.

Nintendo and any serious gaming publisher always spread out their big game releases.

@FishyS @FragRed I was thinking about a 2026 like:

  • January - Rhythm Heaven Groove (Switch 1)
  • February - Age of Imprisonment
  • March - Tomodachi Life Living the Dream (Switch 1)
  • April - Luigi’s Mansion 4
  • May - TTYD Switch 2 Edition
  • June - Yoshi’s Woolly World (Switch 1)
  • July - Splatoon 4
  • August - Pikmin 4 Switch 2 Edition
  • September - Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War remake (Switch 1)
  • October - Metroid 6
  • November - Pokemon Gen 10
  • December - Switch Sports Switch 2 Edition

A mix of bigger new stuff, smaller new stuff and remasters/remakes while also leaving room for a megahit like 3D Mario to be used at a point later on in the lifespan where the lineup may otherwise be on the quieter side.

@SViper I think the full transfer is just to make it convenient and move all your settings and things all at once. You can currently transfer 1 game save file at a time between two switches so I think it is pretty much guaranteed you will still be able to transfer things one by one between Switch and Switch 2.

I think the featured Switch 2 upgrades for Odyssey and Bowsers Fury say everything you need to know about the potential for a 3d Mario this year.

They’re not advertising Switch 2 upgrades for Age of Calamity, Mario Kart 8 or DKC:TF - in all cases to avoid cannibalising sales.

That doesn’t mean they’re not going to release a Mario game next year. But - let’s be honest - you might be disappointed that it’s not Mario but Bananza is made by the Odyssey and Mario Galaxy team. It will be a showpiece game full of invention and rewarding curiosity with excellent moment to moment gameplay. Why wouldn’t you want to give that time to breathe?

I’m excited about what might come in 2026. I’m hoping for a new Fire Emblem that builds on the ambition of Three Houses.

No new 3D Mario for a while.

Google Nintendo EPD Group 8 or Nintendo EPD Tokyo.

Donkey Kong Bananza is their game.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)

@StuTwo
The lack of update for Super Mario Wonder, but an update provided for New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, is telling that they may have more plans for Wonder specifically.
How cool would a content update with Wario as a playable be? With actual gameplay changes like using his iconic dash attack.

As you say, updates for older games risk sabotaging sales for newer games.
However, they could also serve as important campaign tools.
Like, "Get ready for Age of Imprisonment by playing Age of Calamity; updated for Switch 2!".
Basically, I'd say expect a lot of update announcements in future Nintendo Directs as reminders to play these older refreshed games. It's not like they go on sale often anyway.

@StuTwo @RupeeClock There was that odd situation with Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition where instead of doing 720p 60fps in handheld mode, they did 1080p with an unlocked framerate. It might be that Nintendo Warriors games just run better without any updates required.

@Grumblevolcano
For Age of Calamity specifically, I recall that it's capped at 30 FPS, and that certain things might have logic tied to it operating at that framerate such as the Sheikah Slate runes.

In general I expect Switch 1 software running on Switch 2 to be able to hit performance and resolution maximum targets, so no annoying slowdown in Age of Calamity is the hope.

For HW:DE, I can't say as I've not played that one yet, but it was a port of the Wii U game with the 3DS content as I recall, so it stands that a less ambitious engine designed around the Wii U would've run fine on Switch.

Is it know how it will be when I first turn on NS2 aka will it give me option to transfer profile from NS1 instead making new one or something?!

@SViper Yeah you should just be able to sign into your existing account. It was pretty straight forward when I got my second Switch.

@Bigmanfan thank you for answer, I did same almost 5 years ago to my little brother where we moved he's profile from my NS1 to he's brand new NS1V2, but now I can't remember how that worked and this time it will be whole New Console Gen move to me, so!

Edit: I'm interested if Physical NS2 Edition copy of PL:Z-A will work on NS1 cause saw article or something like that, that one game that is being released for both NS1 & NS2 that it's Physical NS2 copy will work on NS1!? Because I plan to buy 2 copies of PL:Z-A, but I'm still unable to decide if I buying 2 copies of NS1 version or 1 of each Console version.
Edit2: do we already know Read & Write Speed of NS2 Internal Drive!

Any Switch 2 units that have already been shipped are locked and can’t be used without the day 1 patch which won’t come until June 5, so it’s just a paperweight until then.

Seems like Nintendo is not taking any chances again and will seemingly use this method moving forward to prevent any early hardware exploits for emulators.
