Hi guys. Right now, I have enough money in my Nintendo Account to purchase either Mario Tennis Fever, or the Metal Gear Collection Volume 1, but not enough for both. I know that they are very different games, but what do you guys think I would enjoy more? Did I read/hear right that the Metal Gear Collection got a Switch 2 Upgrade? Is it a free upgrade? I mostly play single player games. Thoughts and help appreciated

I can't attest to the specific quality of the Switch version or its Switch 2 upgrade. . . but since you are buying the games digitally ( implied by your mention Nintendo Account money ), and since you prefer single player games? Metal Gear should be the easy answer. The Mario Tennis games are very much multiplayer games, primarily, while the Metal Gear collection is not only exclusively single player, but its a ridiculously huge amount of single player content.

@OmegaX83 the MGS collection is very good, more so now that the SW2 version brings it to what it should have been on launch (60 fps, full hd), it’s very good now. And it was great on the SW1, but it’s about as good as it gets now. If you haven’t played any of the games, this is an excellent collection to get caught up.
I don’t have Mario Tennis, but from a single player perspective, you have at least 100 hours of content. The controls will take some time to get used to, and there’s plenty of advanced techniques that I’ve never really grasped, but once you take it for what it is, it’s excellent. I’m very happy with the collection and find it to be worth the price. And bonus, the game does go on sale regularly. Also, the SW2 version is a free download.

Personally I struggle to tolerate the older MGS games. I think MGS4 and MGS5 are worthwhile, but MGS2 and MGS3 are pretty dated.

If you don't mind, you're probably gonna enjoy MGS Collection more. But if you're like me and have a lower tolerance for PS2 era games, I'd say go with Mario Tennis Fever and wait for the 2nd MGS collection to play MGS4.

Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 & 3 are absolute masterpieces. I first played MGS1 long after its release on my PSP and still enjoyed it immensely. They're each some of the most cinematic games that released on their respective systems with stories that continue to resonate strongly to this day, and they're all so meticulously designed. I think they represent the best of the series (with 3 as my all time favorite).

The control schemes are certainly outdated - they don't play like any 3rd person shooter you might be used to. But if you take them as they are, you'll find deep gameplay systems that were ahead of their time (with mechanical intricacies that arguably still haven't been replicated).

It definitely doesn't make much sense to me to play MGS4 before playing the first three since the fourth game makes constant references to all 3 games that came before. It has MANY major characters from the previous games and makes allusions to all of them throughout and that's not even counting that you revisit an entire location from the first game in MGS4. Most of its story is trying to wrap up everything that happened in the first 3 games (which allegedly Kojima never wanted to do in the first place, but he was pressured to make another game).

Similarly, MGS2 is almost incomprehensible without the context of the first game. If you're going out of order, the only ones that make sense to play standalone are 3, Peace Walker, & 5. PW takes place after 3, and 5 after PW, but they're self contained enough that you won't miss too much if you played any of those on their own.
