This sucks, but at the same time I think this has been the case for a loooooot of games nowadays. Where you have to download the actual game itself after inserting the disc. Or where the vast majority of the game isn't on the disc and you download the rest when you actually insert the game

The Game-Key Cards are no different that say..."physical" copies of Call of Duty. The bulk of the game is a download. The cartridge is just a permission check to download and play the game. No actual game files are on the cartridge. Assuming you're done with it, you can borrow it to a friend and they can use it. Or you can sell it to recoup the money you spent.
This sounds better then you buy a Digital eShop game and when your done you have no way to resell the game or atleast make some money back from it. This will help Used game store to resell the game as the Code is inside the cart no paper label aka Fortnite so you can sell the game when you no longer need it. I think this is a far better idea that Nintendo has done whether they did to help or insure people will keep buying Digital that is something we will see. But if they do that we need 2-4tb express cards to hold all those downloads.
SF6 I am not surprised. Unless Capcom makes a Super Ultra Street Fighter 6 Turbo: Director's Complete Arcade Edition that uses an offline mode, SF6 is essentially a service game as it stands.
@Dimjimmer What about those that have the Switch 1 game already???? No upgrade to Switch 2 pack?
From the linked article:
"An upgrade from the Switch version will not be available, and save data from the Switch version is not supported or transferrable."
According to recently-opened preorders, the Sega offerings (Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Raidou Remastered, Sonic X Shadow Generations and Yakuza 0) will all be game-key cards worldwide. It seems that no size is too sacred as Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is just a 4 GBs game.
Well if the rumours are true and the only card size available is 64 GB, it's kinda understandable that Sega doesn't want to pay for those just to put a mere 4 GB game on them. That would probably raise the price, and something like Puyo Puyo Tetris is not gonna sell well if it has the same price as big budget AAA games.
OP changed. As a collector, this is brutal. A majority of the boxed releases are now game-key cards. I suppose it's back to building retirement funds for me. Although it still isn't clear if this a boon or a bust for the boutique limited release scene.
So many games that would fit on a 64GB cartridge but aren't?
I'm not sure if Josh Fairhurst is seeing dollars signs or is he updating his resume?
@Magician I really hope LRG pick up the key-cart misery and turn it into a real profit.
Gaming is a luxury hobby but still the gamers have options unlike other luxury hobbies.
If I am willing to give big money to a company that is willing to make something that I want, and it is NOT hurting the other gamers, why hate it?
Waiting time - we all deal with it. It is not a big deal at the end you get your game!
High prices - well you want a limited thing, and it is made to order, ofc it is expensive. Get the digital version and play the same game!
Only available for pre-order in a certain time window. The window is big, and it is ok, because they will not get negative in the revenue. Also, the window is large, before it was a month now it is month and a half!
That is it! And now that I've seen their revenue numbers, I hope they get even more deals!
To each their own but this isn’t a big deal to me at all. Get the card download the game and play it then it’s just like a regular game as far as I understand.
@Qwertyninty - It's basically a physical that the company can decide when your right to it has expired.
Like placing your books at a friend's house and he then decides to move, taking your books with him.
It's not just when Nintendo decides to stop supporting the system 5+ years from now, but also when EA decides, for example, Madden 26 is "done" and so are you playing it. EA already does this on the other systems, they just don't have to announce it.
@Qwertyninty It is not yet tested but I think there are other verification checks after you download the game.
I think the key-cart is only for downloading the game, and I do not believe it is already paired to the downloaded data. On the support page Nintendo states that you have to START the game with internet connection (only the first time, but I think this needs to be done again on system factory reset, changing the SD card when upgrading to a new one etc.)
Only on launch we will know when someone test it by just downloading the game and then cutting off the internet and starting the game.
If this is true then, they have a little door open to just render your game unplayable whenever they want, or force updates etc.
