There's also a rumour that the Wii Shop will be shutting down sometime next year as well, but no substantiating evidence has been confirmed and no major press outlets have reported the rumour yet so take it with a mountain of salt.
Welp, if it's true, should still be able to buy the games on the 3DS hopefully, still think they should release the four swords again sometime for anyone who didn't get it.
If this is true (the Wii Shop Channel rumour) then I really hope the Wii U eshop pace regarding releasing new games speeds up. It's ridiculous that we're in 2016 and still no Mega Man 9, Mega Man 10, Super Smash Bros., etc.

Of course. Makes no sense to get rid of DSiWare on the 3DS eShop. In fact, I would imagine that a lot of developers/publishers would be fuming if Nintendo did away with it altogether (though I can't imagine DSi games being terribly profitable nowadays… if ever).

So very much truth to this. Let's hope that's the idea from here on out — I mean, they've got records of all of our purchases dating back to Club Nintendo, which were reflected on our Nintendo Network IDs and now on our My Nintendo accounts. I really hope that whatever the digital storefront is on the NX, it's the last one; I'm ready to build a digital library that lasts.
In any case, it's going to be a sad day when the Wii Shop Channel goes. It's still an absolute treasure trove for classic games. Unless you bring the emulation scene into the picture, it's unparalleled. And unless Ninty really gets their Virtual Console act together for the NX, it'll remain unparalleled for years to come.
@TomJ: No, for the same reason why you cannot buy PSV games on your PS4, the games are tied to the system (barring multiplat games), but the store is the same; As long as the PS4 store is live, so is the PS3 store.
