Topic: Who Killed Rare?

EuroGamer's article goes in depth on speculating as to who was responsible for killing Rare. Love this quote:

"Microsoft and Rare was a bad marriage from the beginning. The groom was rich. The bride was beautiful. But they wanted to make different games and they wanted to make them in different ways."

I for one am sad to see the same studio that made awesome games like Killer Instinct, Golden Eye 007, Donkey Kong Country, and few other games, wither into nothing.

And yes I am one of the few people who did enjoy Star Fox Adventures.

I so wish they were still with Nintendo. They knew how to make a good game...at least Retro is looking pretty good so far.

Can you imagine Rare and Retro under Nintendo. That would a killer combination!

yeah it sure could be. I for one really miss Banjo and Kazooie on Nintendo systems. Xbox just isnt really doing anything with them...well I guess Rare isn't since they've been with Xbox. All the games you mentioned are great by the way...I do like Perfect Dark a little better than Goldeneye, but that's Rare too!

Yes I forgot to mention Perfect Dark and, Banjo and Kazooie who were pretty much if you ask me the inspiration for Ratchet and Clank, and Jak and Daxter. Similar to the fashion Donkey Kong and Diddy were for Banjo and Kazooie.

Another "I keep looking in the past without actually paying attention to the present" Rare thread I see. Keep in mind, around the time Microsoft bought Rare, most of the people that made these games everyone remembers so fondly had left, so even if they had stayed with Nintendo, it wouldn't have been the same.

Fact is, if Rare could still make great games, there would be a lot of great must have games on microsoft's systems, but there aren't. stop living in the past & move on.

I do think it is pretty much Rare's own fault that they aren't really getting anywhere now. It does just seem funny that they really seem to lose it when they went to Microsoft. They missed out on Rare's glory days. The Perfect Dark Xbox live remake is really good though.

On the note of Perfect Dark Xbox live remake, they should redo Killer Instinct. I don't know all the legality of it, but I think it would be a nice game to on a HD system.

Good to see that Retro has been good to Donkey Kong Country with Returns...still don't know if it feels quite the same as the first 3, but is still really good....and sometimes frustratingly difficult.

I liked it to. wasn't the best out there but I enjoyed it. The biggest downfall of it for me was that when you beat it, that was it. No going back to find anything else or anything.

Ouch! LOL, come on now, it wasn't the best, but still enjoyable.

Nintendo let Rare go because they wanted to take their time making games. Rare didn't have any games ready for release close to the GBA/GCN launch window. Nintendo made Rare stop game development on all their announced games and focus strictly on finishing Starfox Adventures ( Which I still own ).

Another note...i personally think they ruined Conker...I know a lot of people think it's funny to see him drunk and cussing, but I am not fond of the idea. Call me old school but I think a lot of the profanity in games is unnecessary, but anyway, that's besides the point.

Rare killed rare.

People like to blame Microsoft but everything they've made on the 360 had been good to great. Rare lost some original. It's shine with started and grabbed by the goggles.

Nah. They turned him from something painfully derivative and soulless and made him a (for the time) surprisingly refreshing character, especially considering the system it was on.

I knew it. Rare was putting out some good games...still don't know if they could make one quite like one made by miymaoto..but it's not fair to compare someone to that.

I liked Starfox Adventures much more than all the other Starfox games. Problem?
