Good to know I'm not the only one who disliked Symphona's story. How far in did you get, Popyman?
Sorry, didn't see this. XD Well, I've tried playing it three times. The first time I didn't get far at all and sold it. Years later I tried again and got well into the second world or whatever. The third time I played it with my friend in multiplayer, got to about the same place, and was REALLY enjoying it (gameplay wise). Then his brother deleted our save file and that pretty much killed any chances of me ever picking up the game again. >_>

Sounds like you got pretty far in. Further than me at least. That doesn't bode well, seeing as I want to go back to it once I finish the other games in the series. Oh well, at least you really gave it a chance, several chances in fact.
Of what I've played so far, I love it. I've only played Symphonia, Symphonia 2, Abyss, and Vesperia. Vesperia is my favorite, and Symphonia 2 is the worst. Unfortunately, my Xbox died, so I can't finish the game. sniff But, I know what happens at the end. Symphonia 2 wasn't so nice, however. 1. Only 4 new main characters, a third of them got on my nerves. 2. Lloyds new voice. 3. COURAGE IS THE MAGIC THAT TURNS DREAMS INTO REALITY. Seriously? Just when I thought Richter was cool. But no, just no. Anyway, Raven is my favorite Tales of character of all time, closely outmatching Yuri. Vesperia is epic win. Still gotta finish Abyss and Symphonia 1 (out of laziness), but I'm really looking forward to 3DS port of Abyss.
Tales of Vesperia is my favorite of the bunch as well. Everything about it just works so well. I can't wait to play the rest of the series, though.
Man, why is it whenever I watch the intros to a Tales of game, it gets me pumped to play the game?
Also, the Tales series seems to be incredibly dependable. The mothership titles at least seem to be universally good. The rest of the series, though, seems to be a bit more mixed, to say the least.
Lately I've been attempting a Pincer Strike of the American releases in the series, starting with Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Vesperia, and ending with Tales of Symphonia smack-dab in the middle, right where it all began with me. Hopefully I'll have the motivation to see this through.
Unfortunately, I've already hit a little snag - As it turns out, Tales of Phantasia hasn't aged as well as I remember. The story is still pleasant, the graphics are still beautiful, and the music is still brilliant. However, the gameplay is rather rough and I'm frequently annoyed with it's excecution (difficulty attacking aerial enemies, confusing dungeons, random encounters, occasional lack of information). The battle system is especially frustrating to deal with since I've played later and more refined entries in the series. I'll try to pull through, but there is a chance that I may abandon it in the end.
Tales of Vesperia, on the other hand, has been going quite well. I even got my brother involved with it, and we're both thoroughly enjoying it. In fact, I'm almost done with it, and it will soon be the first Non-Pokemon game that I've been motivated to play through without break since Final Fantasy XIII over a year ago.
I just finished Tales of Vesperia today with my brother. It took us over 53 hours to finish the game while completing as few side quests as possible. I'm looking forward to the EX New Game.
As for the game itself, it's been pretty great so far. The story is occasionally lacking in execution, but all together it's well-told and I'd say quite enjoyable. The ending was very nice. The music, art, and world all work well together to create a charming atmosphere, though a few tunes did get on my nerves. I also found the characters to be quite likeable and interesting, if a bit cliché. The gameplay, on the other hand, was excellent, among the most refined in the series as far as I've seen; though I do wish you had more control over your allies. They can be a pain sometimes.
The only things I really didn't like were a few of the tedious dungeon puzzles, occasional unnecessary backtracking through dungeons near the end, and the unskippable cut scenes.
All-together, it's not Best-Game-Ever material, but it is pretty excellent in my opinion. It's my favorite in the series so far, and I look forward to playing the other entries in the series.
I've decided to just skip Tales of Phantasia and just play the PSOne version later in the year, once I'm done with the 'pincer strike'. I doubt I'll need to give up on the others since they have better gameplay.
I never really got into the series. I played one of them I think it was Tales of Destiny on the PS. All I really remember is that the storyline had something to do with sentient swords and that the battle scenes were side scrolling like an action game.
Now the series just doesnt interest me cause there are too many games in the series and I probably wont ever get around to playing all of them.

There are only 7 Mothership games in the US and none of them have anything to do with eachother. I'll be done with them before the year is over.
I'm a big fan of the Tales series. I have every game other than RM2 and RM3 on some system, more or less. I'm really excited about Graces F and Xillia, and I'm super tempted to get a 3DS for Tales of the Abyss.
So far, the only Tales game I've played is Tales of Symphonia and I loved it so much!!! Its one of my favourite games ever! It has a fantastic story, awesome characters, (especially Kratos) a great fun battle system, well-designed dungeons and an amazing soundtrack, its soundtrack is my favourite gaming soundtrack of all time.
I plan on getting all the games in the series I can which means all on nintendo consoles that have been localised or have fan translations so I'll get Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the new world at some point as well as Tales of the abyss 3DS and the three DS Tales games as I think all three have fan translations. If all the games in the series were on nintendo consoles, I would definitely get them all.
Because of how much I want to be able to play all games in the series I've looked at information of all the games in the series and have found out about all the main characters in the series (not enough to get loads of spoilers though) and could even name all of the main characters in the series as well as all the characteristic genre names if I was asked to. At least I thought I could until I saw someone say that there were four new main characters in ToS: DotNW, I thought Emil and Marta were the only new main characters in that game.
I played almost all of them, and truthfully the only good two are Tales of the abyss and Tales Of Rebirth, both of which have amazing stories and characters.
As for the rest of them, they are basically cookie cut garbage repeating the same story over and over again in a different fashion (save the world theme with cliché characters).
I love the tales games that i've played which were Tales of phantasia(gba),Tales of symphonia, and tales of symphonia dawn of the new world an soon ill be playing abyss!(on 3ds)
