Topic: What will happen to the retro games on NSO after the server is taken down?

I know it won’t happen for years, but what will happen to our NES and Super NES games from NSO after the server is taken off one day like the Wii Shop did? Will we lose all the games? What will happen to games and save data we subscribers have in our app

@Don I’m hoping guessing it will be moved over to the next system.

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

@Don Presumably what @1UP_MARIO said.

But it's not impossible that they will allow us to keep them on the Switch at the end of the Switch's service. Fact is, there's really no precedent for this kind of service yet. No standard "this is what usually happens".

I’d guess something like this, too. Since we actually have the data one the device, with the drm check

I'm kinda wondering how much longer we've got until the Wii U eshop shuts down. Then again PSN on the PS3 is still up and that thing is from way back in 2006. I see no real reason to shut either of them down so maybe we still got a while. I do firmly believe that there should be an option to purchase and download the games should we wish to. This locked behind a subscription thing really sucks. I sure don't feel like I'm getting a deal when at any moment Nintendo can just take the games away from you.

I hope that doesn't happen anytime soon. I would be tempted to download most of the GBA/DS library. I would be even more tempted if they offered some sort of "closing down" discount. Most of my VC purchases were hoard purchases anyway.

Yeah i ended up rebuying alot of Nes and snes games on Wii U because i didn't want to transfer the games to Wii U from wii and have them no longer playable on my Wii. My wishlist on Wii U's eshop is still pretty packed with games i never got around to buying.

I hope we will be able to transfer save data over to the next system, but this situation is unprecedented and Nintendo's track record with online stuff is pretty bad. Just kinda hoping for the best from the new management right now.

Given the weekly NSO eligibility check, once the servers are down it'll act like if you don't have a subscription. Same with PS+ free games and Games With Gold XB1 free games (you won't lose the 360 ones).

Of course this is one of the flaws of subscriptions vs. buying games outright.

Wording is key here. These games aren't "our" games. NSO is very clearly a rental service and you have purchased nothing besides periodic access (which is also key here). They have zero reason or incentive to let anyone keep these games once the service shuts down and no one should expect otherwise.

At best, they may let you transfer save data to whatever next system the service continues on (if they even offer the same games or continue with the service on the next system).
