@VigilThief Is that a trappist beer? Might have to go check that out...

By the way: congrats on the achievements of your soccer team. I enjoyed their matches, and had hoped they could beat the French. I do hope that they manage to secure the third place, though. It's the least they deserve.

Thank you. The half finals sure were a disappointment but I think every Belgian is proud of their team. A third place would be welcome though.
Geuze is not a trappist beer but a Lambic. It's sour in taste and very different from almost any other type of beer. Definitely try it if you've got the chance but be warned that not everybody likes the acidity. It tastes like heaven to me though.

@VigilThief If I remember correctly, there's also something like "kriek" in Belgium? And a couple more famous I do know are Duvel and Palm. And back in the late eighties/early nineties, Stella Artois was something of a thing here in the Netherlands.

I can tell you, that as a beer loving American, ending up here in Amsterdam, with access to all these brands was also kind of like being in heaven...

So, this Geuze beer, how does it compare to Palm or Duvel? Does it sit somewhere in between or does it look and taste a bit like one of these two?

@VigilThief - Looks delicious. I love a good Lambic, Saison, or any other Belgian beer in a green bottle (or any other color bottle, but especially green). Have you had any of the DeKoninck beers? My grandpa is from that family, and he always had some around his house and a nice stained glass bar mirror with the name.

@ThanosReXXX - If you’ve never had a Lambic, I’d suggest going all in on your first and order a full bottle over trying a taster. They can be a bit shocking, and many people don’t settle in to the experience until multiple gulps in.

Typically Kriek is made from Geuze, but most Krieks nowadays have sugar added to them to make them sweeter to cater to a broader demographic. True Geuze and Kriek fans call these fake though. You can recognize them by their bottles with caps. Real Old Geuze and Kriek have bottles with a cork. Like I mentioned before, it's hard to compare Geuze with any other kind of beer because it tastes so differently. Palm and Duvel come nowhere near the refined taste of Geuze.
It's like comparing champagne to wine. That's also why Geuze is often called the champagne of Belgian beer. Also, Stella tastes like dishwater... just saying.

@bimmy-lee
De Koninck makes perfectly fine beers and are very loved here in Belgium, especially in Antwerp. I've tried their original blend and their Triple 'd Anvers. I really enjoy those and often order them in a bar because Old Geuze is quite rare in bars. I do find them more often in restaurants though. What you said about Geuze is true btw. It does come like a shock to many.

@ThanosReXXX - All true above. Duvel and Palm are golden/strong ales. More in line with the rich, sweet Trappist tradition. The others are countryside beers. Sparkling, light, and effervescent. The wine to champagne comparison is perfect. They’re probably closest to the first beers humans ever brewed, but the furthest from what we commonly drink today.

@VigilThief Dishwater? Probably why it has all but disappeared here, then...
Guess I'll just have to give the Geuze a try, then. I do like Palm and Duvel, though, so maybe I'm not really such a refined beer drinker, but more of a Burgundian, and I'm relatively easily pleased, or maybe I'm just not a difficult person...

And besides, normally, Heineken is my regular beer of choice.
And I'm also into Bacardi, so not a 100% beer guy...
EDIT:
And I also forgot about my fondness of Stroh Rum. Got acquainted with that during one of my many winter sports vacations. It's a great rum to drink, mix and use in cakes and desserts.

You don't know that until you've tried a real Geuze.
I hope you'll try it one day, I think it's definitely worth it. You'll probably have to go out of your way to find it and chances are you won't like it, but that's fine. Always stay honest with yourself.

@VigilThief In Amsterdam, where I live, there is a place called "De Bierkoning". It's both a shop and a "proeverij". They advertise themselves as having 1001 kinds of beer, and although that may not be the exact number, they DO have quite a lot of them, from all over the world, so chances are that they will also have that one.

Sounds awesome! I hope they have it in stock. Happy hunting otherwise.

I've never partaken in any alcoholic beverages, but y'all are making them sound awefully attractive!

Every once in awhile my father or other relative/friend will have something like a Coor's Light or Bud Light, and I just can't get over the strong smell.

@ogo79 - Let me guess, “slobmaoboe” or “ogointhisho”? Like I said, that’s my real name, and I’ve gotten those two all my life. Grade school was rough, man. I had to fight for my honor all the time. That’s how I got all these scars. I’m just glad I’ve met you to finally give some context for “ogointhisho”. Now I finally know the source all those bullies referenced.

@RR259 - It’s far less interesting than, at least, I make it seem. Beer tasting is a fun hobby, but like any hobby; it can quickly turn dark for any person. If it sounds interesting to you, and it’s legal for you to drink alcohol responsibly, pick up a few suggestions in this forum that pique your interest, and give them a try. It could open up a whole new world of exploration for you, but it’s also fine if beer isn’t your thing to explore.

@gortsi - It looks like we’re linked up on Untappd, but I still haven’t explored it to figure it out. You have an impressive resume my friend, instant respect. Friday is usually my day for a mix and match six pack, so I’ll figure it out and start my log then. Just finishing this case of Stella until then.

@bimmy-lee thanks man, I'm trying! It's quite easy to use once you get the hang of it. @RR529 I wouldn't even bother if these were the only beers available-even though I do have them sometimes since they're cheap. There are so many other options out there. @ThanosReXXX De Bierkoning will definitely have the Oude Geuze Boon, and it should be widely available in the Netherlands in general, it's quite easy to find it in the UK, even in supermarkets, and we're nowhere near close to Belgium. Definitely worth trying, even if the style is not to everyone's liking.

@RR529 Beer can be a bit of an aquired taste if you've never tried them before. You could try mild ales or old ales, they usually don't have a strong smells or over powering tastes, so they might be a good starting point.

@gortsi Yeah, I think so too. Right now, I've got my hands full with a lot of other stuff, but whenever I'm in the neighborhood of that wonderful establishment, I'll pop in and get a bottle, or two to try it out...

Lagunitas Cherry Jane sour ale brewed with Turkish delight cherry juice. It’s in their 2018 One Hitter Series. It’s delightful. The cherry flavor reminds me of my grandma’s canned cherries when I was a kid. That last sentence could probably be misinterpreted, intentional or unintentional, but I’m sticking with it.

@6ch6ris6 - Malt beer sounds delicious. Heard of it, but never had it. I like malty beers and malted ice cream shakes (malts), and I’d really like to try one.

@Octane - A new beer a day is a good motto. I’ve had most brew equipment I would need for a while, but I’ve still never taken the plunge. I even read The Joy of Home Brewing by Charlie Papazian, which is a really good resource. I think I would really enjoy brewing, but I’ve just been putting it off for some reason.
