unless you live in Gotham city, I seriously doubt you need anything to guard your home, except for maybe a security system.
Yes, because outside of Gotham City, the world is a happy crime-free place where everyone leaves their doors unlocked and their windows open.
What about New York and Metropolis?

I can see the appeal of dogs (my family's never had one), and while cats spend most of their time outside, go missing for days on end and can come back with vicious wounds or even a bun in the oven (as opposed to dogs which generally stay indoors), you have to pick up dogs droppingswith a plastic bag, and that doesn't really appeal to me.
My current cat was relatively old compared to my previous one (which, you've guessed it, mysteriously dissapeared), and has taken a while to acclimatise itself to our house. She's much fluffier though, which makes her nice to stroke.
The old cat would sit on my lap - he'd be in the hallway and I'd sit down against a wall and he'd bound over to me and sit on my lap, but the new one doesn't, which I miss.
One point I'd like to make is that cats can be a bit harmful at times. For instance,my little cousins(who are toddlers)aren't always the most behaved around animals, and you know how cats do.Pissed off cat+little kids=problem.
I'm pretty sure a pissed off dog would be just as dangerous or not more so than a cat around kids, so your argument there is pointless.

Not if it's just a little puppy .In fact, some dog breeds are quite peaceful(*cough*poodle!).
And you might wanna look at KaiserGX's comment.
