Well folks, there we have it. Our replacement to Club Nintendo. I for one, look forward to this system. Any hopes, concerns, or other nagging thoughts about The Nintendo Account?

I don't think there's much to say about it yet. If it has cross-play (i.e. cloud saves) then that's really all I want. If it also has cross-buy then that's a bonus I'd welcome. The fact that it's going to mean that we get rewards like we got with Club Nintendo again? Then that's also a good thing.

Beyond that? I guess we'll just wait and see. But I can't see any downside.

@Megumi: The overarching account system is called Nintendo Account. My Nintendo is the new rewards program that replaces Club Nintendo and is part of Nintendo Account.

From the looks of it, Nintendo Account will absorb the Nintendo Network ID. NNID will probably serve as the visible part of accessing your Nintendo Account, and is one of the ways to sign in. I imagine it will also continue to be your ID name online.

@Megumi:
All of the slides are here in English:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/151029/04.html

I read them and am still not quite sure. But from what I can tell the "Nintendo Account" is kind of like a universal login. It allows you to connect all of your Nintendo stuff together. So you can login with your Facebook account, your NNID and so on and it'll link all of the different Nintendo services together. Basically you can create this account without having a Nintendo device and if you do get one later you can link it. Why not just use NNIDs? Well that's an extra step that people won't do if they're on mobile. People want to login with facebook/twitter etc

The My Nintendo thing is the new service itself that sits in this new space. They detailed six main features of this service:
1. Purchasing games for your consoles on the website
2. Notifications about new content (sounds similar to what we already get on Wii U and 3DS)
3. Rewards as a replacement for Club Nintendo. Digital content, merchandise and discounts
4. A unified friend list (and I'd assume you could also grab friends from facebook etc)
5. Cloud storage (they specifically mentioned saves and character data)
6. Real world applications with links to theme parks, movies and retail (???)

@Megumi: Nintendo Account is replacing or enhancing the NNID account service.
while My Nintendo is replacing Club Nintendo.

Because no one can remember their nnid? It should be something that people can remember, either email or user-defined login. Having an arbitrary number is just not acceptable in todays world. People of today have trouble remember their own phone numbers.

@Therad:
I think the point is more that on your smartphone, tablet or PC you are already logged into Google, Facebook and/or Twitter. And ontop of that people who will be downloading these mobile games won't necessarily have an NNID. So instead of having a "create a NNID" step when people want to play these mobile games they're going to let people login with an account they already have.

It's pretty much a standard thing for a lot of services.... and Nintendo explained why

It is generally said for any account system that more than half of people registering accounts quit halfway through the process. Every one of you must share the same experience of not being able to recall your account name or password when trying to log in. Accordingly, we have focused on making the new account easy to create or easy to sign up as well as easy to use, namely, it is harder for members to forget about it.

Specifically, for our new account, you can log in with your Facebook, Google or Twitter account. Alternatively, you can log in with a combination of your email address and your password. Of course, you can continue using your Nintendo Network ID as well.

I assume this means purchases will finally be tied to an account? If not, no deal.

@Vincent294: I don't think you have a choice either way. Plus technically your purchases are already tied to an account, it's just they have limits on how mobile your purchases are. For example if your 3DS was stolen you'd be able to get your purchases back because they are technically linked to your NNID. The only problem ATM is that you have to go through Nintendo to do it.

At the very least this announcement singles out cloud saves. I think we still want full cross-buy and even the ability to have a game on two consoles of the same type at once. I don't see how it impacts them if I want to have more than one 3DS with access to the same games. I can do that with Steam, I can do that with Apple and Google. Why not Nintendo? But at least with cloud saves if we lose our console we don't lose our saves. Which is a move in the right direction.

@skywake: I gave up my choice long ago when I bought a 3DS launch day. That's not to say I don't have a second choice: Not buying the NX and going with a One or something.

@Vincent294: I just think it's a strange reaction for you to have. They're clearly taking steps in the right direction and your response is to say you're not interested unless it has a thing that is technically speaking already a thing. For three reasons.

1. It's an improvement, surely that's a good thing
2. What you're complaining about is technically already a thing
3. It's not like you can really opt-out of the service if you're buying a Nintendo product

@skywake: I'm not interested if they botch things a third time. Whether they have or not, we haven't seen yet. But this time they have to get things right. It was okay the first time; The second not so much. I skipped the Wii U thanks to this and lack of 3rd party support. I'll skip the NX, maybe even handheld too, if they can't have things as basic as account-based purchasing and friend messaging implemented. Yes, I know the latter is on the Wii U, it doesn't help that they removed it and killed Flipnote Studio for good measure on the 3DS (that was salt in the wound).

Am I the only person who buys consoles for the games you can play on them? All of this account based stuff is really just for convenience. If it has a game I want on that platform I'll buy into that platform. I never consider whether or not friend lists are unified or messaging friends is possible.

Vincent294

@skywake: I do. Am I the only person that plays The Elder Scrolls, Mirror's Edge, Dishonored, and more 3rd party games in addition to Halo, Forza, and/or Naughty Dog games? I really want Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and Xenoblade Chronicles X, but not enough to ignore those other games on top of a bad online infrastructure. I'd rather get a One, PS4, or new PC.

My question is when does the new rewards program start? If it's soon then I'd hold off on purchasing a few things until then. It wouldn't be smart of Nintendo to have that scenario over Christmas, but that doesn't mean that be the case.

EDIT: Oh it's March 2016 for the new accounts

@Vincent294: Then the reason you're avoiding Nintendo has nothing to do with the infrastructure. You're just using it to further justify a decision you've already come to because of the content.
