Not sure if there's already a thread that this would fit under, but I think it'd be better to have it's own thread to discuss this film specifically.
The Book of Life is coming October 17, 2014. It's a tale of love filled to the brim with Spanish themes and settings. If that art style seems familiar to you, that's because you've probably seen it. That's right, it's the work of none other than the creator of El Tigre, Jorge Gutierrez!
This movie looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I can't wait for this.

The trailer itself was dull and the song they used at the end was awful. I'm getting a good vibe otherwise, and the art style works well with the CG, so I think I'll probably give it a shot someday. It could easily just be a bad a trailer. What's this El Tigre, though?

EDIT: El Tigre looks like a show I could get into...if I can get over the sub-par voice acting. It's not a lot worse than some anime dubs I've watched, but cartoons had come so far in the early 2000's in terms of voice acting that now its hard to go back to not so good VAs. I think maybe they wanted Voice Actors who were actually Mexican, which is a nice touch, I'll admit.

El Tigre was a pretty good show for what it was, Nick's first flash animated cartoon. I remember it sticking out to me and then falling in love with it because of the purely Mexican setting/theme. I hadn't seen other cartoons like that before and I didn't mind the art style. It was pretty captivating to see that. I don't remember the voice acting. I'd have to go back and check that out, but I only remember the main character Manny and Rida being kind of annoying. Manny's father in the show even had the same name as me. That blew me away. And he could pronounce it correctly. Pretty sure him and most of the other adult characters had legitimately Mexican VA's and I actually remember those being pretty good.
As for the quality it was fun from what I remember but I haven't seen it in years. The show has a bit of a cult following.
Anyways, lol.
I agree they picked a bad song at the end. I didn't have a problem with the trailer other than that. Then again I was busy drooling over the art style. The team working on this film is amazing though so I have no doubts it'll be funny. It's still months away too so there'll probably be better trailers near release.

I actually thought Manny's was okay for a kid's voice. I watched a trailer where Manny's dad and a skeleton villain spoke, and the skeleton overacted way too much, while the dad's voice felt authentic but poorly directed. I'd have to find the specific trailer, it's hard to explain. I could probably get used to it if I watched a few episodes. Voice acting isn't that big a deal for me.

My problems with the trailer are mostly that it was focusing on telling the story synopsis. Which is fine, but then they'd keep remembering that it's a sort of lighthearted kids story, so they'd throw in jokes...without the context, thus making the jokes fall flat. It was painfully unfunny in a way that probably isn't the movie's fault. I have a feeling it'll be good, but I wouldn't blame anyone if they got turned off by that specific trailer. Hopefully they'll show as better one before the movie's out.

I think I remember that scene actually. I kind of get what you mean. But like I said it's been years since I've heard any of the voices so my memory could be off. I think I'll actually go watch an episode or two later today for old times sake.

Yeah I get what you mean with the trailer. I feel the same way, it can be off putting.

I remember really liking El Tigre when it was on air in 2007. I can't decide if it's still good because, much like another cult classic (ahem Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack), it's pretty much impossible to find on the internet.

EDIT: as for the movie, if it's being made by the same guy, I'm interested (and I'll have to do a google search for whatever else he's worked on). Art was beautiful, but the song was definitely the wrong one (i would've picked a spanish mariachi-type song to match the theme).

Isn't Pixar (I vaguely remember something about this) supposed to be making a movie about The Day of The Dead too?

They dropped the idea because a cartoonist made a funny picture about it and people took it seriously. I'm not even joking: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/09/disney-day-of-the-de...

The image looks really cool, I'm now disappointed that we'll never get a Pixar movie about The Day of The Dead.

If you can understand Spanish, turns out the Latin America trailer actually has more footage! I got a good laugh out of the extended intro in this one. That dumb song is still in it though, and pacing isn't much different.

Very excited to see how the full movie will turn out when it comes out.
Looking forward to seeing more on that Day of the Dead film from Pixar too, but I'm more excited for this since it has Guillermo Del Toro and Jorge Gutierrez working together on it. Not entirely sure Pixar could match the beautiful art style/CGI combination here but if anyone knows how to make a brilliant CGI movie it's them so they shouldn't be doubted.
