I found Rainbow Factory to be dumb, tedious and overall boring.
You can tell that the writer tried their hardest to make a very shocking fan fic, but, he/she failed miserably. There's too many inconsistencies and plot holes, plus the writing is too simplistic and very predictable. All in all, I would rather read Cupcakes any day of the week over Rainbow Factory.
I liked the idea of Rainbow factory more than Cupcakes though, I found it more sinister. But Cheerilee's garden, that was one was something else. That's all I got though, I hardly read fanfics. I think for it's time, Cupcakes was shocking, but it hasn't aged well.
Mata, the show's violence is like the violence you find in Bugs Bunny. Spike likes Rarity, it's unknown at this time if she likes him. She knows he like her, but I'm guessing relationships isn't a huge priority. This isn't a soap opera. Although...
The surprise twist ending to Rainbow Factory was so stupid. Seriously, very out of character, for that pony that did those things (I don't want to spoil the ending). Regardless, Cupcakes is great because it goes into gory detail, it pulls you in. You can picture the room inside your head, the horrible decoration. Yes, the idea of Pinkie slowly killing everypony to make her cupcakes more delicious is ludicrous, but it's great because of the amount of detail. Rainbow Factory focuses on the death of everypony, and doesn't stay on a single pony for too long, usually having them die off screen, or having their death be implied.
