The internet is full of cases of strangers getting involved in pointless quibbles that don’t lead anywhere because the basic terms of the argument are so vague as to be utterly meaningless.
What are your favourite examples of utterly inane internet debates that seem to crop up again and again?
I think mine is “who is the best guitarist?”. It’s one of the most frequently occurring, pointless, ill-defined, and mind-numbingly boring ‘arguments’ I’ve ever seen on the internet. And yet it won’t seem to go away.
Is it Jimi Hendrix? Is it Joe Satriani? Is it Carlos Santana? Is it Tosin Abasi? John Mayer? John Petrucci! John Frusciante? Steve Vai? Slash? Guthrie Govan?
Does it matter? No. Not in the slightest. Is there any way of getting to the bottom of it? Nope.
Give me your favourite examples! The more inane and insubstantial the better!
"Why should Caesar get to stomp around like a giant while the rest of us try not to get smooshed under his big feet? What's so great about Caesar, hm? Brutus is just as cute as Caesar; Brutus is just as smart as Caesar; people totally like Brutus just as much as they like Caesar; and when did it become okay for one person to be the boss of everybody, huh? Because that's not what Rome is about! We should totally just stab Caesar!!!"
Easy mode debates for sure. They show up every time a FromSoftware game releases. Fans of FromSoft will say they're authentic craftsmen of a lost art, and detractors'll say they're unimaginative gatekeepers.
"Gaming is bad" "Its nonsense" "Corrupting the youth of this generation" "they'll all grow up to bekiller instinct . Ahhh I cringe at the thought of those comments. And when ever news media covers gaming.
'Is Die Hard a Christmas film?' was my first thought, though I don't think that's actually as annoying as some of the other examples in this thread. People acting offended/disgusted by others liking or not liking a particular food is a joke that's staler than two-day-old pineapple pizza crusts, and if I may have to go off grid if I ever hear another 'but easy modes ruin the developer's intended experience!!!!' argument.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music
Everytime I see thread about Pokemon games, there is always the trolls with their ego bashing the newest Pokemon games as the worst ever and they will insult who ever disagree with their opinion as they forced their opinion must be accepted to justify the "truth".
Those peoples are sad, just get outta from this website and yelling to the wall.
And Goodness knows
The wicked's lives are lonely
Goodness knows
The wicked die alone...
This game isn't worth (insert amount of money here)!'
I saw this one pop up so much with Metroid Dread and, as someone who has zero interest in Metroid whatsoever, it still drove me insane with how people were talking about it. If you don't think something is worth a certain amount of money, WAIT FOR A SALE. It's as simple as that. And I'm aware that on Nintendo's own storefronts their games tend to not get discounted regularly but you could just go to a local games shop and they'd probably have it for like €10-€15 less physically. This notion that one singular aspect of a game (in Dread's case being that it was 2D) can lead people to not even give it a chance infuriates me so, SO much.
I’m so sick of the “2D games aren’t worth 60 dollars” 2d games can be just as big as 2d half 3d and it sucks that everyone just needs a 3d game just to justify the price, like I get it, they might be smaller, but come on, in all honesty I felt like I robbed games like hollow knight, those games filled with charm, content, and all deserve 60 bucks in my opinion.
The other is nightmare before Christmas a Holocene or Christmas movie! What I think it is, and I feel like the creators wanted it to be, is it depends, what happened it during Christmas, boom Christmas movie, Holocene, Holocene movie, I feel like the prospective is changed depending on the time.
The old versus new paper Mario debate. For some reason people can’t accept that someone might prefer the new games over the old games and visa versa. And if you like all the games you are treated like an outcast by both sides. When I used Reddit I saw somebody say sticker Star was their favorite game. He literally got harassed by about twenty different people for liking sticker Star. Last thing I will say about this, is how stupid the idea that you aren’t a paper Mario fan if you prefer the new or old games over the other. Each side says this. Just because you have different opinions on the games, you can’t say they aren’t a true fan because of it.
To be clear I am one of the weirdos who like all the games.
I've been in a few that have infuriated me. One with a guy who didn't really like Xenoblade, aside from Xenoblade 2, and mainly got into it because "Female characters with minimal clothing", who refused to even play the other games because they didn't have the same tired gacha system or sexualization.
Then that same guy also hated fairies in BotW, and kept trying to argue that the Zelda series needed to get rid of fairies, because he kept abusing them, instead of him recognizing that he was legit going out of his way to abuse them.
Then you have the one with the same guy who kept believing that BotW 2 will 100% be the end of the cycle of reincarnation, and cap off the series as it's "Finale", not understanding the Zelda devs would never outright make an ending to the series, as it would limit them.

@VoidofLight I’m not saying someone can’t get into a series because the characters look attractive but man that’s taking it to a whole other level. Not wanting to bother with the lord, the world, people are odd dude.

@Snatcher The dude acted like all the Xenoblade fans used blades because they liked the sexualization as well, when a ton of people didn't really like or care for it in actuality.

Yeah, it has to be the "booba in video gam" debates. As someone who actually paid attention to every related "controversy" for years, its been a completely dead horse for like 6 years now. I never need to hear about it again.
Xenoblade is when in fact I realized how redundant and meaningless all the debating is. Like I watched Xenoblade Chronicles X make people pointlessly mad because of a few changes in the localization process, even though only one of the changes was a genuine negative. And then 2 years later I watched Xenoblade Chronicles 2 make people pointlessly mad because of (if you really think about it) the lack of changes in the localization process, even though almost none of it was really bad enough to justify changing it, as silly as it could it be. (Xenoblade 2 has issues, the wacky fanservice-y character designs are barely even one of them).
@VoidofLight Really? How self, I don’t even know what to call it, to the point you actually think people are that hive minded, sad. I can’t wait to try out the games for myself tho, be it one or two I play first I’m playing both before 3 I hope.

@kkslider5552000 Yeah, it really isn't that I dislike the fanservice even. It's just that I hate how people only like the series because of one game that had fanservice, refusing to even try the others, and then acting like that's the entire series at it's core, when it's not even apart of the identity of said series. Xenoblade is so much more than just sexualized female characters and campy anime trope jokes, but because of 2 and people who got into 2 either because of Smash, or because of 2 having those things, they believe it's the identity of the series as a whole.
Also, yeah Xenoblade 2 has issues with the core game that matter more than "Design sexualized!", it has glaring issues in terms of it's tone, and some of the game mechanics feel like they haven't really been tested (The gacha for one thing..). You also have the fact that the tutorials barely teach you how the combat functions. It took me like 4-5 years to know what art canceling was.
