It's worth pointing out that since the iPad now has OnLive, then handhelds are capable of, literally, console gaming.yeah, It needs broadband, yes. So its not for everyone, but it's still the best gaming available for portable devices now - it's premium gaming
Technically, wouldn't it not be portable, since you need broadband, and even 3g isn't that fast

Ipad is a Tablet.
If i had t chose one then maybe console. Can't get stuff like Uncharted and Alan Wake on a handheld. (the vita might change that)
I used to be console all the way but the 3DS has changed all that. Nowadays, I'm simply too tired and lack the time for long sessions and with the 3DS I can let my wife watch the tv or lay with her in bed. I also feel like the 3DS offers a nice console like experience with its beautiful graphics, online functinality and circle pad. Now I am considering a Vita instead of a PS3...but would 2 handhelds be overkill? I even have an iPad, but the only games I like on it are board games and strategy.

You can move it around the house, play on other WiFi connections when you're out and about, so by very definition it's portable. Especially when you consider that when you can't play OnLive on your iPad because you're not in a WiFi zone, you've got some 22,000 other games to chose from.
(and yes, I'm aware that there's only 200-300 iPad games worth playing. It's still a massive number).

Nah, different devices for different purposes. I have the PSP, and it's far better than the DS or 3DS for the niche Japanese games. I'm expecting the Vita to be much the same - it's already shaping up that way.
I'll take handhelds over consoles any day. In fact, I've considered dumping all of my current generation consoles and just sticking the the portables from now on. I'm on the go too much to be sitting in the game room in front of the HDTV for long.

In the same boat, and I'm virtually brand new to portables. I had a GBA but was too obsessed with consoles to give it much attention.
Ultimately, I feel like when I'm playing a console game I have to prep myself for a movie's length period of time for it to be worth it. Portables fit nicely into my life whether I'm at home or on the go. I don't have to try to fit them into my schedule like I do console games.
i have ptsd and have trouble just sitting watching tv with the family in the evenings, so i love handhelds: i can play whilst my husband watches a show. i can keep track of both pretty well, even if it's only to give a smile/nod to him. i can take it with me to keep myself 'steady' whilst waiting during appointments, etc.as i have no patience any more. the DS/DSi has been an enormous help to me.
that said, i am enjoying Skyward Sword. there's room for both in this world.
