Day 81. This is the coop in its final placement. On the left is going to be a big expansion to the run that will be added later.
A couple group shots.
Lucina. Her head is about as puffy as its going to get. You can't even see her eyes anymore unless you look at her face from below. The most adventurous of the group, she is always to the first to try to get out the run door when I open it. She is my go-to bird if I just want to carry a chicken around the yard. She is also incredibly calm, even when being petted by several children.
Samus. Apparently she is the second most behind in development, hinted at by her still present down feathers on the face. She is always right behind Lucina when it comes to greeting me at the door.
Moltres. Still the farthest behind development wise, she at least has almost completely grown in the adult feathers. Yet her head still has mostly down, which is why it looks shrunken compared to the rest of the body. The golden feathers on her neck will spread to her entire head when the down is replaced. As shown by my holding hand, she remains the swiftest of the flock, and is certainly the hardest to catch.
Zelda. My goodness she has some quirks. She hates being held, and will struggle like mad to get away. However she has a tendency to peck fingers and toes...
Midna. While she looks almost exactly like Zelda, once you pick her up you can tell the difference since she is far calmer then Zelda. Also the white barring on Zelda is slightly faded.
Peach. She will be the biggest once fully grown, weighing in at 7-8 pounds.
Viridi. Not much to say here, other then she looks similar to Peach only with muffs under her beak.
Emmeryn. Note how she is the only one with a completely black beak.
Developmental notes. Their voices are starting to "crack" as in they are starting to lose the baby chirps in favor of the adult clucking. It's literally the chicken equivalent of a pre-teen boy going through the voice change during puberty. Quite funny actually.
Finally, after a HUMUNGOUS absence the last update is here! Now since each entry is going to be far bigger then before (pictures of the birds plus their namesakes, breed name, personality, and more), only a couple girls will be featured at a time over the next few days to spread things out. Now then, here we go!
Zelda. Reason behind name: In connection with the breed name and the chickens in the LoZ universe with the same name. Breed: Cuckoo Marans. Egg color: Dark brown. Personality: The leader of the group, Zelda has a certain aura about her that oozes dominance. Case in point, she is almost always among the first to snatch whatever tasty treat is thrown in the pen.
Midna. Reason behind name: Originally, the breed she was supposed to be is completely pitch black, which matches Midna's dark background. But the name stuck regardless. Breed: Barred Rock. Egg color: Brown. Personality: Definitely among the more friendly of the group. She is one that tends to be neither first nor last when it comes to the pecking order, and typically minds her own business.
A few things to say. I'm gonna be out of town this weekend, so there will be three girls per update instead of two. All pictures were taken on the same day as well, so that's why the lighting appears the same. Also some aren't situated on a green chair because, well, they didn't want to pose.
Peach. Reason behind name: She's colored like the fruit, plus like her royal counterpart she has a friendly personality. Breed: Buff Orpington. Egg color: Light brown. Personality: Two words: friendly glutton. Peach is easily the second most at ease when it comes to being around people. Also, if Zelda doesn't get to it first, she will always eat whatever snack is on offer before anyone else without fail.
Viridi. Reason behind name: She lays green eggs, and Viridi is also a name for a green color. Also her feathers are similar to her namesake's hair color. Breed: Easter egger. Egg color: Light green. Personality: Certainly less acclimating to human interaction the others, Viridi tends to avoid getting too close, but will approach on occasion. Note her cheek muffs and long beak.
Emmeryn (Emm for short). Reason behind name: No real reason, I just like the name. Though both seem to share a pacifist attitude. Breed: Columbian Wyandotte. Egg color: Brown. Personality: Similar to Viridi, only slightly more or less aloof and skittish. Interestingly, Emm has the shortest beak of the group. She used to have a habit of laying eggs outside on the ground, but that problem seems to have resolved itself.
Samus. Reason behind name: Shares her namesake's power armor color. Also when puffed up she resembles the shoulder pads. Breed: Buckeye. Egg color: Brown. Personality: Samus is kind of an oddball behavior-wise. She tends to jump around the most, and every time I hold her she looks straight up into space. Maybe she's looking out for any Space Pirates? Also a fun fact, Samus' breed was the first to be developed by a woman.
Lucina. Reason behind name: Lucina is my favorite Fire Emblem character, the bird herself is my favorite, and I love the name. Three reasons in one. Breed: White-Crested Black Polish. Egg color: Creamy white. Personality: Hands down, most friendly of the entire flock and my personal favorite as previously mentioned. In fact she actively follows me around whenever I visit inside the pen. Also surprising considering her breed, Lucina is pretty high up among the pecking order ranks. However when it rains I have to blow-dry her head since the others peck at the crest feathers since they get all stringy. Yes you heard that right, this chicken gets "salon sessions" in the house, she's that special. She even trusts me so much as to not freak out either, which is pretty remarkable.
Brittany. Reason behind name: Originally her name was Moltres, but it has since changed once I found out what the Pikmin 3 Captains' names were. The name fits because both are the smallest in their respective groups (in the original Brittany's case by a long shot). Breed: Golden Campine. Egg color: White. Personality: Remember when I said she was the fastest? Yeah, now the opposite is true. She is basically a runt, with abnormally shaped legs and overly large wings. Add her smaller then average size (for her breed anyway, there are others that are supposed to be even smaller), and you've got probably the most unique of the flock, except maybe Lucina. Brittany is the shyest, and prefers to stay away from me, and the others as well since she is at the very bottom social-wise. I always make sure when giving handouts that she gets a fair share, otherwise she will won't have a chance to grab a bite.
