Topic: Amnesia: Rebirth and SOMA

I just downloaded Amnesia: Rebirth as soon as it came out (so far it's very good) and SOMA is one of my favourite sci-fi narratives in gaming. Instantly looked it up whether it was on Switch and surprised to find no announcement for either game.

Did Amnesia on Switch underperform? It's true Frictional have very limited resources so to port to Switch would likely be a big undertaking, but the games they make aren't very demanding on resources in the first place. Would anyone else be interested in seeing their games on Switch? Listening to developer interviews these guys are actually big Nintendo fans so it's a shame they didn't have an announcement for Rebirth for the Halloween season.

Oh, there's a new Amnesia game? Awesome. Gonna have to check that when my backlog's cleared down a bit. Did enjoy Dark Descent & Machine For Pigs. Never did play SOMA though, that's also on my list to get around to.

No idea how Amnesia on Switch performed - with the way the eShop currently is I wouldn't be surprised if it got buried, and it being an older title that a lot of people who'd be interested in it already own elsewhere, I do wonder if it didn't sell crazy well. Could also just be that Frictional's a small team, so ports have gotta be something to consider after the "main" release has been and gone. It'd be cool to see though.

On an adjacent note, I wonder how well Amnesia played on Switch - I played it on the PC and it made fairly heavy use of the mouse, being able to gradually open doors and peer through the gap and the like. I know its been ported to other consoles but I was never sure how well it'd work on a controller.

@Raylax Machine for Pigs is made by a different developer and is unfortunately very unfocused compared to the original, the themes of the game clash and it felt very uninspired.

That said, I suggest you give SOMA a shot because it's a very strong narrative, there are occasional traditional spooky moments but in reality the game accomplishes a really strong sense of dread, especially at the end, which a lot of games fail to accomplish. For a game that didn't perform as well as Amnesia it really grabbed my attention and really made me think about it even after the end.

Not a very long game as well and the world in SOMA is really interesting to explore. Strong recommendation from me.

I played some of SOMA on the PS4 and since the control scheme is pretty much the same in all Frictional Games, I can say it feels intuitive and didn't take me out of the experience. I think the action button was something like the R button so you can move the analogue sticks while holding an object without much effort.

The story in soma is amazing. And you can even disable all the spooky interruptions if you don't want to mess with those (the monsters do appear, they are just not a nuisance)

Bloop.

Yeah, SOMA's been on my To Play list for many years now, it just keeps slipping the net. Maybe that'll have to be my Halloween game for this year.

And yeah, Machine For Pigs didn't grab me (or spook me) as much as Dark Descent, but I still largely enjoyed it. I understand The Chinese Room handled that one, who's games I've never particularly gotten on with (although never outright hated either... although the less said about Everyone's Gone To The Rapture, the better)

@Eel @Raylax From playing Amnesia: Rebirth for a good few hours now I can also say this new game is heavy on story and lore and is less focused on giving you a traditional 'spook' much like Soma.

Really hard to stop playing it because it's really interesting stuff but after being sleep deprived after work and playing it in the complete dark for a while you really start hearing things because the sound design in the game is fantastic.

If you're into Lovecraftian horror this one might be for you guys.
